Linear Programming Problems Shadi Sawalha

This document contains 7 examples of linear programming problems involving maximizing profits or minimizing costs given constraints on resources. The examples include determining quantities of products to manufacture, packages of items to assemble, types of compounds to purchase to minimize diet costs, tablets to make to maximize profit, types of trucks to rent to minimize transport costs, buses to use for a school trip to minimize costs, and packages of clothing to assemble and sell to maximize money generated.

1A co mpany manufactures and sells two mo dels o f lamps, L1 and L2. To

manufacture each lamp, the manual work involved in model L1 is 20 minutes and

fo r L2, 30 minutes. The mechanical (machine) wo rk involved fo r L1 is 20 minutes

and fo r L2, 10 minutes. The manual work available per mo nth is 100 ho urs and the

machine is limited to only 80 ho urs per mo nth. Kno wing that the pro fit per unit is

$15 and $10 for L1 and L2, respectively, determine the quantities o f each lamp

that sho uld be manufactured to o btain the maximum be nefit.

2 With the start o f schoo l appro aching, a store is planning o n having a sale

o n school materials. They have 600 notebooks, 500 folders and 400 pens in sto ck,

and they plan o n packing it in two different fo rms. In the first package, there will

be 2 noteboo ks, 1 folder and 2 pens, and in the seco nd o ne, 3 noteboo ks, 1 fo lder

and 1 pen. The price o f each package will be $6.50 and $7.00 respectively. How

many packages sho uld they put to gether of each type to o btain the maximum

benefit?

3 On a chicken farm, the po ultry is given a healthy diet to gain weight. The

chickens have to co nsume a minimum o f 15 units o f Substance A and ano ther 15

units o f Substance B. In the market there are o nly two classes o f compo unds: Type

X, with a compositio n o f o ne unit o f A t o five units o f B, and ano ther type, Y, with

a compo sitio n o f five units o f A to o ne o f B. The price o f Type X is $10 and Type Y,

$30. What are the quantities o f each type o f co mpo und that have to be purchased

to co ver the needs o f the diet with a minimal co st?

4 There is o nly 600 milo grams o f a certain drug that is needed to make both

large and small pills for small scale pharmaceutical distributio n. The large tablets

weigh 40 milograms and the small o nes, 30 milo grams. Co nsumer research

determines that at least twice the amo unt o f the smaller tablets are needed than

the large o nes and there needs to be least three large tablets made. Each large
tablet is sold fo r a profit o f $2 and the small tablet, $1. Ho w many tablets o f each

type have to be prepared to o btain the maximum pro fit?

5. A transpo rt company has two types o f trucks, Type A and Type B. Type A

has a refrigerated capacity o f 20 m 3 and a no n-refrigerated capacity o f 40 m 3 while

Type B has the same overall volume with equal sectio ns for refrigerated and no n-

refrigerated stock. A gro cer needs to hire trucks fo r the transpo rt of 3,000 m 3 of

refrigerated sto ck and 4 000 m 3 o f no n-refrigerated sto ck. The cost per kilo meter

o f a Type A is $30, and $40 for Type B. Ho w many trucks o f each type sho uld the

gro cer rent to achieve the minimum total co st?

6. A schoo l is preparing a trip for 400 students. The co mpany who is pro viding

the transpo rtatio n has 10 buses o f 50 seats each and 8 buses o f 40 seats, but o nly

has 9 drivers available. The rental cost fo r a lar ge bus is $800 and $600 fo r the

small bus. Calculate ho w many buses o f each type sho uld be used fo r the trip for

the least possible co st.

7. A store wants to liquidate 200 o f its shirts and 100 pairs o f pants fro m last

seaso n. They have decided to put to get her two o ffers, A and B. Offer A is a package

o f o ne shirt and a pair o f pants which will sell fo r $30. Offer B is a package o f three

shirts and a pair o f pants, which will sell for $50. The sto re does not want to sell

less than 20 packages o f Offer A and less than 10 o f Offer B. Ho w many packages

o f each do they have to sell to maximize the mo ney generated fro m the promotio n?
