The passage discusses a sailing trip that was meant to be relaxing but ended up being very demanding due to rough seas and the boat owner shouting orders. It also talks about the history and purpose of the Ordnance Survey map organization in Britain.

The hikers imagined a relaxing trip of sunbathing on the deck of the boat near the beach, but in reality they spent most of their time at sea in strong winds with cold sea water hitting their faces while the boat owner shouted orders at them constantly.

The Ordnance Survey began in the 18th century in Britain and was originally intended to provide accurate maps for the army of the time, as most existing maps were unreliable. It helped the country feel less threatened by potential invasion.
