     Loud / Soft
     Instrumental / Vocal
     Influenced many other forms of music e.g. Jazz, funk, film etc

    Must have ingredients --- Spirit, Energy, Passion, Romance

    Misconceptions – Usually the result of not listening and understanding the genre

     It has to be loud!
     It has to be Fast!
     Bass drum always plays Du Dumm Du Dumm
     It has to be Busy – Too much technical activity

    General Musicianshsip

     Understand the music


     Voicing / Levels
     Articulation
     Dynamics
     Repertoire
     Sound
     Don’t just learn the drum pattern, be aware of the other musical lines e.g. bass,
    piano, guitar etc
     Practise at a low volume, don’t crash around!

    Core Elements, similar to Samba Batucada

    (1) Bass / low frequency (2) Internal grooves, mini pulses – Balance the rhythm
    (3) Accents - Direction – On side Off side (4) Pitch
    Practical
    1. Identify with the feel (Surdo line)
    2. Stix and brush – Traditional style
    3. Shaping the rhythmic line – Rhythmic distortion
    4. Failsafe, neutral grooves (if you are uncertain of the direction) if you get involved
    with the direction be sure it compliments the melody
    5. Direction: On side and off side – the importance of the rhythmic shape.
    6. Drummer and Percussionist; who does what - Rhythm and Sound territorial
    rights!
