Assignment 1
Assignment 1
Understanding self is a complicated yet promising undertaking whereby a person can subjectively
evaluate how him/herself with morality, good custom, and right conduct. Due to its subjective nature,
there is no way a person can understand him/herself that easily. Fortunately, the pioneers set forth
blueprints as a guide for us to unravel the mystery of ourselves. Such blueprints are the perspectives that
could guide us to understand ourselves better, such as Philosophy, Sociology, Anthropology, and
Psychology.
“The unexamined life is not worth living.” — this is the quote that Socrates used to establish and
determent thy one’s self. Philosophy is the study of nature, knowledge, and reality of how the world
works. Perhaps human knowledge still cannot decipher the code, but some people are trying to break
down the code piece by piece by starting on the question “How ourselves works?” Philosophers like
Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, etc., give different viewpoints regarding how Philosophy works concerning the
self, and all are valid theories. Thus, to infer, the foundation of living is the life that a person cherishes.
“The function of sociology, as of every science, is to reveal that which is hidden”-Pierre Bourdieu.
The latter Is true because Sociology deals with society and human behaviors and relationships with each
other. Thus, in order for us to understand ourselves better, we need companions, so, therefore, we can
distinguish what is right and wrong. No man is an island, as they say, and that is quite true, especially in
understanding oneself. Help is a must because we are trying to interrelate factors and dig deeper into the
unknown knowledge of man.
Anthropology is more applied to how humans adapt to their surroundings and focuses on cultural and
biological human conditions. This perspective is the science of why we are called humans in the first
place. As we all know, humans are unique from any other living organisms because we have a
conscience. The latter can be traced to Psychology which studies the human mind and behavior.
To conclude, understanding self interrelates different perspectives from here on out. These
perspectives could help us further understand better, and as we try to reach the point of satisfaction, I
believe that there is no endpoint onto what we are trying to achieve, rather just a broader outlook on how
the human body works.
