n With globalisation, international/domestic tourism as well as business travel has increased manifold. This
has led to a tremendous increase in demand for hotels, restaurants, resorts and related hospitality services
which in-turn have created a demand for hotel management education across the world.
n India has a large number of leading global hotel chains. The manpower for these hotel chains is recruited
from the various hotel management and catering institutes in the country.
n 24 Institutes of Hotel Management (IHMs) spread all over the country offer three-year degree programme in
hotel management & catering technology. Besides, a number of institutes/colleges are also offering 3-4 year
programmes in hotel management/hotel management & catering technology.
n The degrees offered by the Indian institutions equip the students with all required skills and knowledge to
effectively discharge supervisory and managerial responsibilities in star category hotels, airline catering, ship
and cruise line catering, restaurants, institutional catering, industrial catering, etc.

QUALITY CONTROL
n National Council for Hotel Management & Catering Technology (NCHMCT), a statutory body, is responsible
for establishment and prescription of standards/norms for the courses offered at the Institutes of Hotel
Management (IHMs).
n All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), a statutory body of Government of India, regulates quality
of the institutions offering hotel management & catering technology courses.

n Living cost: The students would require about US$ 100 - 150 per month to meet their living expenses i.e.
