Module 1: Scientific Attitudes

Introduction and Focus Questions

According to Susman (2021), atittude is a learned tendency to evaluate

things in a certain way. This can include evaluations of people, issues, objects, or
events. Such evaluations are often positive or negative, but they can also be
uncertain at times.
While personality on the other hand is a learned behavior toward
environment and/or a behavior towards the given situation. Though, the
personality of someone is moulded with different experiences and interactions
that person encounter in his life. Thus, attitudes are the main part of one’s
personality.
However, to become an efficient scientist a person must have Scientific
Attitudes. A good attitude in any field of work is everything. A good attitude will
never stop you to become a best scientist.

As you go through the lesson, think about these following questions:

• What are the scientific attitudes?
• How does it differ from personality?
• How does attitude affect one’s investigation in scientific study?

3
Pre-assessment

Let’s find out how much you already know about the topic. Answer the pre-test below.

Concept Development

What is Scientific Attitude?

It is an attitude that the scientist should possess. Another example, a set
of attitudes that students study science possess.

Scientific attitude is the most important outcome of science teaching, and

which enables us to think rationally. It is the combination of many qualities and
virtues which is reflected through the behavior and action of the person.

Scientific attitude is the desire to know and understand, questioning

to all statements, search for data and their meaning, search for verification,
and consideration of consequences (Gardner, 1975; Osborne, Simon &
Collins, 2003).

What are Scientific Attitude?

⚫ CURIOSITY
- Always try to seek, inquire and discover
- To become a good scientist, you need to become keen-observer! To
look around. To be curious to your environments and to ask WHY
and HOW worlds interact with one another. Do not settle only for
WHAT but always try to think outside the box. Always be curious.
Healthy curiosity to your environs will help you understand more
about the universe.

⚫ OPEN-MINDEDNESS
- Open yourself to new ideas. Do not be bias!
- Be flexible. Isaac Newton, Albert Einstein, Archimedes never become
an instant scientist because of their intelligence but they keep on
asking and become more open even in their imagination. They never
stop their mind based on what they saw yet they dig deeper to know
more and open their mind to more possibilities and ways.

⚫ SKEPTICISM
- Do not accept things blindly without questioning. Healthy
skepticism!
- Doubting is acceptable. If not given too much of it. Before accepting
the data, results or even answers to your queries always scrutinize
the work. Develop the doubting attitude unless present with reliable
data. Do not settle for less nor settling for compromise works just
because it is. Always set standard for your work to have the best
results.

5
⚫ PATIENCE
- Wait calmly for the result of the investigation since most scientific
study takes time.

- Patience. May sound so simple yet so hard to attain. No one said

that experimenting is easy. Also no one achieved an experiment with
only one-way procedure. Because the hardest ways lead to great
success. Thomas Alva Edison can prove it. He’s 10,000 not-so-
working ways never stop him to continue his work and on his 10,001
way he made it. PATIENCE, will always be your partner.

⚫ EMPATHY
- Putting oneself in the position of another person.
- Before conducting an experiment think of others. Do not forsake
others just because you want a winning piece. EMPATHY. Put
yourself to one’s situation. If it affects them then stop it. If not, if it
will help them instead then continue work in progress. Do not let
anyone hurt because of your ambition.

⚫ INTELLECTUAL HONESTY
- Be truthful with all the result.
- Do not manipulate the result. It will lead to misinterpretation.
- “Honesty is the best Policy”. That means so much. We have the very
famous quotation, “Ang kang Juan ay kay Juan. Ang kang Pedro ay
kang Pedro lamang”. Do not claim anyone’s work for your success.
Discoveries and works are almost the same that’s inevitable. If so,
then always give credits to the owner. Scientists even writers are very
particular to their work so do not distort or destroy their idea for
your own sake. Other words to ponder, do not manipulate the
results. Whatever the results. Accept it. Do not bend the suppose
results it will lead to another mistake. It will create a Domino Effect.
Be a man with principle. Be honest.

The rivalry of the DNA Model. Where

Crick and Watson was given an award for
Franklin’s work. Intellectual stealing.
According to many, Franklin is a good
friend of Wilkins where he shared the ideas
to Watson and Crick.

⚫ OBJECTIVITY
- Do not influenced by anything but pertinent physical observations.
- Objectivity. Be a goal-oriented person. Do not be easily swayed by
what your naked eyes sees.

6
⚫ HUMILITY
- Being modest and unassuming
- Humility is another good character to be needed to become a
successful one. Do not be boastful yet be proud. Do not be a bragger
but be confident enough to what you have done. Stay humble.

⚫ PERSEVERANCE
- A good scientist should not give up
- Remember Thomas Alva Edison. Be like him. If the world gives you
one hundred problems, then create one thousand ways to solve it.
Perseverance. Determination. He’s positive attitude did help. He
never feels discourage because he only thought that he had 10,000
wrong ways and another 10,001 that made him successful.

⚫ APTITUDE and SERENDIPITY

- Aptitude – innate ability or acquired skills or talent.
- Most scientific breakthroughs came out of serendipity
- “UNEXPECTED DISCOVERY”
- Usually, discoveries are UNEXPECTED. Arthur Fry and Spencer Silver
are the best example. The post-it-note or Sticky note. Accidental
discoveries which is very useful nowadays.

The Scientists and their Stories

✓ Albert Einstein a German physicist is born with dyslexia. He never bothered his
self about mathematics yet soon found out an interest in algebra books which was
given by their family friend. In 1894, he was expelled from school for rebelling
against his teacher. He is known for its famous formula, E=mc2 and the theory
of relativity.

✓ Isaac Newton is another scientist known for Universal Gravitational Law. His
discovery is purely serendipity or out of the blue. He just sat under the tree when
an apple fell on the ground. He then observed that things fall directly to the ground
which lead him to ask some questions. What makes things fall? Can anything stop
things from falling? Are the Sun, moon and stars are falling? Why don’t they ever
hit the ground? Isaac Newton is not interested what school taught. His grades
were not that also impressive yet he is very much interested in studying how the
world works.

✓ Thomas Alva Edison conducted more than 10,000 FAILED experiments.

However, did not give up, “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t
work.” Edison, was forced to leave school because he is not good in Mathematics.
He would not accept the teacher would say without testing it or seeing it. He was
homeschooled by his mother because he is dyslexic and deaf yet his positive
attitude towards failure eventually led him to success. He invented many electrical
devices like fluorescent lamp.

✓ Stephen Hawking is a paralyzed and the computer talk for him. But his disability
did not stop him to explain the Big Bang Theory and revolutionized physics. He is
the 21st century scientist
