What is It

Listening is the ability to receive and interpret messages for

communication. The auditory or ears are used to hear these messages and the
brain processes them. As we listen, we use different listening strategies to be able
to achieve our goal. We are directed on the following:
- Listening based on purpose
- Listening based on familiarity with the topic
- Listening based on the levels of difficulty of short text listened to

Strategy is a plan or manner to successfully achieve a certain goal.

Purpose

Why do you listen?

This question may gather different answers. Commonly for students inside
the classroom, you listen to learn. On the other hand, if you are at home and

5
listening to music, you intend to be entertained. Indeed, there can be different
reasons why one listens. You may consider the following purposes whenever you
listen:
a. Gather Information. You listen to get some details of information like
answering the who, what, where, when, how or why.
b. Understand. You listen to know and realize something.
c. Enjoyment. You listen to relax and have fun.
d. Learn. Your goal in listening is to gain knowledge that will surely stay
and be useful for a lifetime.
e. Communicate. You listen to be able to respond to the message.

Familiarity with the Topic

How familiar are you with what is being talked about? Can you relate
yourself to it?
Usually, when the teacher talks about love in the classroom, you listen
intently. Why is this so? It’s because at your age, you can almost relate and be
interested with the topic. However, if the teacher discusses the long process of
division, your attention might be for 15-20 minutes only. Your attitude towards
different topics are different due to interest or familiarity to the topic. So, how do
you listen when you are familiar and not familiar with the topic?

- Details are usually for review

FAMILIAR - May not require full attention to details
- Can easily grasp the content as it is relatable
- Highly interested

- Needs to take down notes for details

NOT FAMILIAR - Requires full attention
- Processes information for comprehension
- May not be much interesting

Levels of Difficulty of the Short Text Listened To

Is the audio or listening text difficult or easy? What happens if listening

becomes difficult?
You may have your listening texts preferences. The difficulty of the audio or
listening text may greatly affect your understanding of the text listened to. You
have to consider the vocabulary and context. Normally, if the listening text is
informal, comprehension is easily accomplished. Otherwise, comprehension
becomes a great task for formal texts.

6
Let’s put these texts into categories:

FORMAL INFORMAL
News Music
Academics Radio Talk Show
Speech Short Story
Commentary

For example, flexible and relaxing manner can be applied when listening to
informal texts. Your purpose is mainly for entertainment, so you don’t need to be all
ears at all. While on formal texts, learning and gathering information are essential.
Thus, more attention is required. Higher level of vocabulary and understanding of
context is also essential.

10
What’s New

Let us try this activity using the internet. An internet connection or a mobile
data is needed for connectivity.

A. Using a cellphone or a computer, try to look for information using this

keyword: PANDEMIC
B. Perform the search using the keyword with Yahoo and Google. Determine the
differences in the search results for each one. Write the answers on your
answer sheet.

Guide Questions:

1. What are some of the search tools you can use to find information?
2. Which one do you currently use?
3. Why do you prefer this search engine?

Note: If you find this activity difficult to perform, seek the help of a friend, a
neighbor, or a family member. Remember that you should complete the activities,
otherwise, you will not learn the needed skills. So by all means, you may ask for
specific help or a demonstration, but do the activity yourself.

What is It

Search engines on the World Wide Web are accessible programs that let you
do keyword searches for information on the Internet. There are several types of
search engines and searches may cover titles of documents, URL's, headers, or full
text. Keep in mind that the results you get from one search engine may not match
the results you get from another search engine. In fact, they are often different.
Therefore, it may actually be beneficial to use more than one search engine on a
regular basis.

11
Things to do:
 Connect to the Internet /Log on to the Internet. Make a note of which browser
you are using. Look at your chosen browser's interface and see whether it
offers you access to search engines. For example, it may contain a separate
window with search engine names in it. If it does not, then choose one of the
following below (they are the names of commonly available search engines):
 Google, Yahoo, Wikipedia
 You should now see a space into which key words can be typed. (If not, we
suggest you try the Google search engine as the main interface page because
it is not a busy one and easier to see what to do.)
 Do some searching. Choose one of the following topics to do some searching
on. You should know enough about the topic or find it of such personal
interest that you will be able to think of alternative terms for key words. (If
need be, you can use a thesaurus or dictionary to help you.). It will give too
many results so that the point of the activity becomes very clear.
Examples: • Art • Travel • Music • Gadgets • Computing • Local history
• Cookery • Gardening • Recycling • Wind (or solar) power
 If you choose one of these, type in to the box on the search engine interface
the key word(s) you've chosen and click the Search button or the Return key.
Now note approximately how many results have been returned to you. Look
briefly at the first ten responses you have from the search engine by clicking
on each in turn (use the back function to return to the search engine results).

Don't follow any further links that may appear in any of these sites. For the
topic that you chose, characterize the first 10 responses as:
• general information about the topic;
• specific, but covering more than one aspect of the topic;
• specific to one aspect of the topic; and
• puzzling because you are not sure why several of these are in the first 10
responses.
 Make the search more specific.

12
Examples of Search Engines:

1. Google
Google is the most popular search engine in the world. If you use Chrome or
Firefox as your browser, Google is the default search engine so you can also perform
searches right from the address bar. Go directly to Google.com by typing
in http://google.com into your web browser. That will take you to the main Google
web site, which is designed to serve the world in general.

Actually, searching Google is pretty easy. Just type what you’re interested in
finding into the search box on the Google web site or into your toolbar!
If you’re using a toolbar, as you type, you may see words begin to appear
below the toolbar’s search box. These are suggestions that Google thinks may match
what you’re interested in.

After you have typed in some texts, press ENTER to activate the Search
button. Results appear on the page below. Using good keywords gives you better
results. Be as specific as you can.

13
For example, a search for the keyword "musicians" will give far more results
than a search for the keywords "Elvis Presley." You do not need to include "and"
between terms, but the order in which you type your keywords will affect the search
results. You can also search for a specific phrase by including words in quotation
marks. Google searches are not case sensitive.

As you narrow your search and use better keywords, you get more relevant
results. Putting a phrase into quotes tells Google to look for the exact words in that
exact order.

Try typing different things such as names, phone numbers, and more to find
people or things.

In addition to the information displayed on the initial results page, there are
often links to more pages of information that meet your search criteria. These pages
are reached by activating the link for the number of the page. Usually, you will find
links for additional pages 2 through 10 near the bottom of each page, along with a
Next link. Each page beyond the first page also contains a number of items that
match your search.

Google Search Tools

Google also provides easy-to-use search tools. For example:
 "Weather Iloilo City" yields the current weather in Iloilo City
 "25 kilometers in miles" converts kilometers to miles
 "Define screen magnification" yields definitions for screen magnification
 "Seafood restaurants 5000" yields restaurants that serve seafood in or near
that zip code

2. Yahoo!
The Yahoo search engine can be used to find information on the Internet
based on the keywords you enter into Yahoo's website. Yahoo then takes the
information you enter and finds websites and articles that match or relate to the
criteria you entered. The Yahoo search engine also provides you with multiple ways
to refine your search results and allows you to perform an advanced search using
additional features or by specifying your own search preferences.

14
 Visit the "Yahoo" website by typing Yahoo in the browser. Enter search
terms into the "Search" box for that related to the content and data you
want to find.

 Be specific as possible when entering keywords. This can help narrow down
your search results and provide you with the exact information you are
looking for. For example, if you want to learn about dog grooming methods
for a poodle, enter "best methods for grooming a poodle" instead of a basic
phrase such as "dog grooming."

Click on the "Search" button to begin your search.

 Review your search results. Yahoo will provide you with a list of relevant
websites and articles that match the keywords you entered into the search
box.

Click on the "Next" button at the bottom of any Yahoo search results page to
see more websites and links that match your search criteria.

15
3. Wikipedia

To effectively use Wikipedia, you don’t need to learn any new software, buy
any service subscriptions, or develop additional skills. It’s really simple. All you
need is the web, to write down keywords.

Wikipedia provides you with information-rich content that will inform your
keyword research. This extension adds Wikipedia searching capabilities to web
browsers. To perform a search, just type 'wiki' in your browser's address bar, then
a space, then the name of the article you want. Live suggestions from Wikipedia are
displayed as you type. You can also highlight any word or phrase on the web, and
an option to search in Wikipedia will appear in the context menu.

 Google your topic with “wikipedia” in the query.

 One of Wikipedia’s advantages for keyword research is the way that it
essentially defines and refines the queries of searchers.

16
Most topics on Wikipedia have a table of contents. This is an outstanding
source for growing your collection of keywords. You can use the table of contents
itself as a list of keywords, or you can use it to drill down into your specific topic.
Wikipedia gives you a list of additional pages that you can review for even more
keywords. This section, called “See also” is listed at the end of most articles. You can
use these as keywords or open these entries for more keyword ideas.

Wikipedia can be an extremely useful form of keyword research. Here are a

few reasons why:

 It is often the first source of a customer’s research, which informs their subsequent
keyword research, and can lead them to your site.

 It provides a huge variety of keywords within a single niche.

 It displays some of the most relevant keywords being searched for within your
niche.

 It provides opportunity for branch-out research to capture halo searches

surrounding your niche.

Wikipedia does have limitations, of course. It does not show you the level of
competitiveness for a given keyword. It doesn’t display the search volume or other
metrics that inform a full keyword research project. You should use Wikipedia in
combination with additional keyword research sources.

What’s More

Use one of the search engines to search for the given topics. Copy only one
paragraph for each topic. Write the answer on your answer sheet.

 Art
 Travel
 Music
 Gadgets
 Recycling

17
What I Have Learned

 The average person living in a modern industrialized society is

exposed to several pieces of information every single day. With the
amount of information that we get through on a daily basis, it is
impossible to remember everything that we need to know.

 A search engine acts a filter for a volume of information on the

internet. Search engines allow users to not only quickly, but also
easily, find the information that is of interest or value to them.

 The goal of the Search Engine is to provide the user with search
results that lead to relevant information on high quality websites like
Google, Yahoo and Wikipedia.

What I Can Do

Read the given situations. Think of a specific key word and choose a search
engine to use. Explain your answers by writing them on your answer sheet.

1. Jim is writing a report about the celebration of Dinagyang Festival in Iloilo

City. When he uses a search engine, he is pointed to a lot of resources about
the festival like origin, history, and feast of Senior Santo Niňo. What
keyword will he type in the search toolbar? What site should Jim use to
help him in his research?

2. Sarah is doing scholarly research about the COVID-19 pandemic. What

keyword is she going to type in the search toolbar? What search engine
would likely yield the best results for her work?

18
Assessment

Use a search engine to look for the keyword Jaro Cathedral. Write the
search engine used and list down the top 7 websites found in the search results.
Do this on your answer sheet.

Additional Activities

Use the search engines listed below to look for how to study English. Write
the first website on each search results. Do this on your answer sheet.

What is It

With the current technological advancement, learners are expected to be

equipped with knowledge and skills of manipulating gadgets, applications, internet,
and websites. It is no doubt that most of young people nowadays are too involved
with cellphones and computers. However, if asked, majority are just searching
through social media or games. The main and leading function of internet and
gadgets is forgotten. This function involves research. A student must develop the
skill of using gadgets and internet on research. That is to search for information and
seek answers to learn more. How can you do that? The answer is to navigate.

21
Website Navigating is the process of searching or surfing the internet for
information. As learned in the previous lesson, there are a number of search engines
you can use to do your research. After landing on a search result, we simply click
the link to go to a specific website. Now, what happens in the website? How do you
gather information from there?

Upon landing on a website, the website visitors may be able to experience the
site with most efficiency by navigating it. Thus, it will allow a visitor to explore and
discover the different areas found within the website. One need to know how to
navigate a website to easily identify what to click on to get the information needed.

There are some essential features in navigating a website.

Website heading or header is usually found at the top section of a web page.
It is where you can see the brand title, logo, about, and contact details of the website.
It also includes the navigational elements and search.

Navigational bar is a section of a website that helps visitors in exploring more

content. It reflects various categories so that one can easily access what they might
be looking for.

22
Dropdown menu is usually found under each category in the navigational bar.
An arrow may appear beside each category or simply point the mouse into one. Then,
a list will appear. From each major category, dropdown menu deepens the search
for a particular information. Just click one specific category from the list and it will
direct you to the page containing such information. Dropdown menu has specific
categories, while navigational bar contains general categories.

When reading some texts, you may notice some words are underlined or in
different colors. These are anchored texts. Anchored texts are usually connected to
another page. They have links directing you to another area of the website or into a
different website.

23
Search box allows visitors to type in the definite keyword of their choice. If list
of categories given is still broad for your search, typing a specific keyword on the
Search box within the website saves time. It will provide results or content within
the chosen website.

Whenever you want to go back to the main page of the website, there’s no
need to hit the back button several times. Instead, just click the Home button. At
times, Home button can be seen as HOME, MAIN, or a website logo. Thus, don’t
confuse it from other buttons.

24
As a website visitor, it is really important for you to take note of these basic
navigational features of a website. It will allow you to have less time in doing research
or finding needed information since it serves as a guide.

What’s More
