Lesson Solving Problems
1 Involving Polynomials
Monday

What I Need to Know

At the end of this lesson, you are expected to:
● differentiate a polynomial from a polynomial equation;
● recall division of polynomials using long method and synthetic
method.

What’s In

Polynomials vs. Polynomial Equations

A polynomial is an expression consisting of variables and coefficients, that involves only

the operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and non-negative integer
exponents of variables. An example of a polynomial of a single indeterminate, x, is x² −
4x + 7. On the other hand, a polynomial equation is an equation that has multiple
terms made up of numbers and variables. For example, if the highest exponent is 3,
then the equation has three roots. The roots of the polynomial equation are the
values of x where y = 0. An example of a polynomial equation is 𝑥 2 + 2𝑥 + 1 = 0.

An expression is NOT a polynomial if a variable is:

✔ raised to the negative exponent 𝑥 −𝑛

✔ appears under the radical sign √𝑥

𝑎
✔ written in the denominator 𝑥
𝑎
✔ raised to a fractional exponent 𝑥 𝑏

What’s New
Some real-life situations require the applications of polynomials. For example,
engineers can use polynomials to create building plans and entrepreneurs can use
polynomials to design cost effective products.

What Is It

In the previous discussions, to solve problems involving polynomials, you must be

3
well-versed in dividing polynomials either by long method or synthetic method.

Here are the steps in dividing polynomials using the long method:

1. Arrange the indices of the polynomial in descending order. Replace the

missing term(s) with 0(zero).

2. Divide the first term of the dividend (the polynomial to be divided) by the first
term of the divisor. This gives the first term of the quotient.

3. Multiply the divisor by the first term of the quotient.

4. Subtract the product from the dividend then bring down the next term. The
difference and the next term will be the new dividend.
Note: Remember the rule in subtraction "change the sign of the subtrahend
then proceed to addition".
5. Repeat step 2 – 4 to find the second term of the quotient.

6. Continue the process until a remainder is obtained. This can be zero or is of

lower index than the divisor.

Illustrative example 1 :

( 𝑥 3 + 6𝑥 2 + 12 + 13x ) ÷ ( x + 3 )

Arrange the indices in descending order

𝑥 3 + 6𝑥 2 +12 + 13𝑥 𝑥 3 + 6𝑥 2 +13𝑥 + 12

𝑥+3 𝑥+3

Divide 𝑥 3 by x to get the first term of the quotient, 𝑥 2

𝑥2 𝑥3 ÷ 𝑥 = 𝑥2
x + 3 )𝑥 3 + 6𝑥 2 + 13𝑥 + 12

Multiply the divisor ( x + 3 ) by 𝑥 2

𝑥2
x + 3 )𝑥 3 + 6𝑥 2 + 13𝑥 + 12
subtract : 𝑥 3 + 3𝑥 2 (𝑥 2 )(𝑥 + 3) = 𝑥 3 + 3𝑥 2
3𝑥 2 (𝑥 3 + 6𝑥 2 ) − ( 𝑥 3 + 3𝑥 2 ) = 3𝑥 2

Bring down the next term, 13x

𝑥2
x + 3 )𝑥 + 6𝑥 2 + 13𝑥 + 12
3

subtract : 𝑥 3 + 3𝑥 2
3𝑥 2 + 13x

Divide 3𝑥 2 by x to get the second term of the quotient, 3x

4
Multiply the divisor (x + 3) by 3x
Bring down the next term, 12

𝑥 2 + 3x
x + 3 )𝑥 3 + 6𝑥 2 + 13𝑥 + 12
subtract : 𝑥 3 + 3𝑥 2
3𝑥 2 + 13x 3𝑥 2 ÷ 𝑥 = 3𝑥
subtract : 3𝑥 2 + 9x ( 3x )( x + 3 ) = 3𝑥 2 + 9𝑥
4x + 12 ( 3𝑥 2 + 13𝑥) − ( 3𝑥 2 + 9𝑥) = 4𝑥

Divide 4x by x to get the third term of the quotient, 4

Multiply the divisor ( x + 3 ) by 4

𝑥 2 + 3x + 4
x + 3 )𝑥 3 + 6𝑥 2 + 13𝑥 + 12
subtract : 𝑥 3 + 3𝑥 2
3𝑥 2 + 13x
subtract : 3𝑥 2 + 9x
4x + 12 4x ÷ 𝑥 = 4
4x + 12 (4)( x + 3 ) = 4x + 12
1 (4x + 12) – (4x + 12) = 0

In this case, the remainder is 0. This means that x + 3 is a factor of 𝑥 3 + 6𝑥 2 + 13𝑥 +

12. Therefore, ( 𝑥 3 + 6𝑥 2 + 12 + 13x ) ÷ ( x + 3) = 𝑥 2 + 3x + 4

Steps in dividing polynomials using synthetic method:

1. Setup the synthetic division.

2. Bring down the leading coefficient to the bottom row.
3. Multiply c by the value just written on the bottom row.
4. Add the column created in step 3.
5. Repeat until done.
6. Write down the answer.

Illustrative example 2 :

(𝑥 4 − 3𝑥 + 5) ÷ (𝑥 − 4)

x – 4 )𝑥 4 + 0𝑥 3 + 0𝑥 2 − 3𝑥 + 5

Step 1:

Step 2 :

5
Step 3 :

Step 4 :

Step 5 :

249
Step 6 : 𝑥 3 + 4𝑥 2 + 16𝑥 + 61 +
𝑥−4

Illustrative example 3 :

The area of a rectangular garden is 3𝑥 2 + 5𝑥 − 2 square meters and its width is

x + 2 meters. What expression represents its length?

Solution:
Long method Synthetic Division

3x – 1 x+2 -2 ⌋ 3 5 -2
x + 2 )3𝑥 2 + 5𝑥 − 2 −6 2
Subtract : 3𝑥 2 + 6x 3 -1 0
-x – 2
-x – 2 3x - 1
0

Therefore, the length of the rectangular garden is (3x – 1) meters.

Lesson Solving Problems
2 Involving Polynomial
Tuesday
Equations

What I Need to Know

At the end of the lesson, you are expected to:

● recall polynomial equations;

● factor polynomials and use zero product property to solve problems in
polynomial equations; and
● Use remainder theorem, rational root theorem or even factor theorem
to solve problems in polynomial equations.

What’s In

The equations formed with variables, exponents and coefficients are called
as polynomial equations. It can have different exponents, where the higher one is
called the degree of the equation. You can solve polynomials by factoring them or
dividing in terms of degree and variables present in the equation.

What’s New

Polynomial expressions Polynomial equations

2x + 1 𝑥 2 + 2𝑥 + 1 = 0

(x+1)(2𝑥 2 − 5𝑥 + 1) ( x + 2 )(x – 2) = 0
1
√2x ( 4 𝑥 2 + 0.5𝑥 − 3) x + 3x = 2x - 4

A polynomial equation is any equation that can be written in the form

2𝑥 2 + 9𝑥 − 5 = 0. It can also be any equation that sets one polynomial equals
to another.

8
What is It

Consider the polynomial equation 2𝑥 2 + 9𝑥 − 5 = 0. You can use factoring and Zero
Product Property to solve for this given equation.

Given 2𝑥 2 + 9𝑥 − 5 = 0, the factors are ( x + 5 )( 2x – 1 ) = 0

Applying the Zero Product Property

x+5=0 or 2x – 1 = 0
-5 = -5 +1 = +1
2𝑥 1
x = -5 =
2 2
1
x=
2
1
Therefore, the roots are -5 and 2.

Try figuring out these worded problems!

Illustrative example 1:
One number is two less than the other. Their product is equal to 63.
Find the numbers.

Solution:
Let x be the number
x -2 the other number ( 2 less than the other)
( x )( x-2 ) = 63
𝑥 2 − 2𝑥 = 63
-63 = -63
𝑥 2 − 2𝑥 − 63 = 0
( x – 9 )( x + 7 ) = 0

Zero Product Property

x–9=0 or x+7=0
+ 9 = +9 - 7 = -7
x=9 x = -7
Therefore, the first number ( x ) is equal to 9 while the second number ( x – 2 ) is 9 -2 = 7
or if the first number ( x ) is equal to -7, then second number ( x – 2 ) is -7 -2 = -9.

Illustrative example 2:
The area of a rectangle is 84𝑚2 . Find the length and the width if the length is
5m longer than the width.

Solution:
Let x be the width
x + 5 the length ( 5m longer )

( x) ( x + 5 ) = 84
𝑥 2 + 5𝑥 = 84
9
- 84 = - 84
𝑥 2 + 5𝑥 – 84 = 0
( x + 12 )( x – 7 ) = 0

Zero Product Property

x + 12 = 0 or x-7=0
-12 = -12 +7=+7
x = -12 x = 7 (consider only positive values for measurement)
The width is 7m and the length is ( x + 5 ) = 7 + 5 = 12m.

Illustrative example 3:
The standard dimensions of a shipping container (in meters) is
approximately given by the polynomial equation: 𝑥 3 − 10𝑥 2 + 28𝑥 − 24 = 0.
Use synthetic division and or remainder theorem to find the dimensions of
the shipping container.

Solution:
Given: 𝑥 3 − 10𝑥 2 + 28𝑥 − 24 = 0
Constant term is -24 and the factors are ±1, ±2, ±3, ±4, ±6, ±12, ±24
Leading coefficient is 1 and the factors are ±1

Now, divide the factors of the constant term by the factors of the
leading coefficient.
±1,±2,±3,±4,±6,±12,±24
−+1
We get: ±1, ±2, ±3, ±4, ±6, ±12, ±24
Let us use remainder theorem to test if +1 is a root
P(x) = 𝑥 3 − 10𝑥 2 + 28𝑥 − 24
P(1) = 13 − 10(1)2 + 28(1) − 24 = −5
1 is not a root

P(6) = (6)3 − 10(6)2 + 28(6) − 24 = 0

6 is a root, therefore ( x-6 ) is a factor

Or you can even use synthetic division to solve for the roots or solutions
Let us try 6 again

6⌋ 1 -10 28 -24
6 -24 -24
1−4 4 0 the remainder is zero so, ( x – 6 ) is a factor
and 6 is a root

𝑥 2 − 4𝑥 + 4 is called the depressed equation and the factors

are ( x - 2 ) and ( x – 2 ), a root of multiplicity 2.

Therefore, the real roots of the polynomial 𝑥 3 − 10𝑥 2 + 28𝑥 − 24 = 0 are 6 and
2 of multiplicity 2. The factored form of the polynomial 𝑥 3 − 10𝑥 2 + 28𝑥 − 24 =
0 are ( x – 6 )( x – 2 )( x-2 ).

Finally, the dimensions of the shipping container are 6m x 2m x 2m.

Illustrative Example 4 :
10
The total number of households (family under one roof) in Cebu City is
expressed as (6𝑦 3 − 17𝑦 2 + 11𝑦 − 2) and the number of barangays is ( 2y - 1 ).
What is the average number of households in a barangay?

Solution :

Divide (6𝑦 3 − 17𝑦 2 + 11𝑦 − 2) by (2y - 1 ) using any method.

In this case, we will be using the long method.

3𝑦 2 6𝑦 3 ÷ 2𝑦 = 3𝑦 2
2y - 1 )6𝑦 3 − 17𝑦 2 + 11𝑦 − 2

Multiply the divisor (2y - 1 ) by 3𝑦 2

3𝑦 2
2y - 1 )6𝑦 3 − 17𝑦 2 + 11𝑦 − 2
Subtract: 6𝑦 3 − 3𝑦 2 (3𝑦 2 )( 2y – 1) = 6𝑦 3 − 3𝑦 2
−14𝑦 2 (6𝑦 3 − 17𝑦 2 ) − (6𝑦 3 − 3𝑦 2 ) = −14𝑦 2

Bring down the next term, 11y

3𝑦 2
2y - 1 )6𝑦 3 − 17𝑦 2 + 11𝑦 − 2
Subtract : 6𝑦 3 − 3𝑦 2
−14𝑦 2 + 11y

Divide −14𝑦 2 by 2y to get the second term of the quotient, −7y

Multiply the divisor (2y − 1) by (−7𝑦)
Bring down the next term, − 2

3𝑦 2 −7𝑦
2y - 1 )6𝑦 3 − 17𝑦 2 + 11𝑦 − 2
Subtract : 6𝑦 3 − 3𝑦 2
−14𝑦 2 + 11y (−14𝑦 2 ) ÷ (2y) = −7𝑦
Subtract : −14𝑦 2 + 7𝑦 (2y – 1)(2y) = −14𝑦 2 + 7y
4y −2 (−14𝑦 2 + 7y )− (−14𝑦 2 + 7y ) = 4y

Divide 4y by 2y to get the third term of the quotient, 2

Multiply the divisor ( 2y −1 ) by 2

3𝑦 2 −7𝑦 + 2
2y - 1 )6𝑦 3 − 17𝑦 2 + 11𝑦 − 2
Subtract : 6𝑦 3 − 3𝑦 2
−14𝑦 2 + 11y
Subtract : −14𝑦 2 + 7𝑦
4y −2 4y ÷ 2𝑦 = 2

11
4𝑦 − 2 (2y −1)(2) = 4𝑦 − 2
1 ( 4y −2 )−( 4𝑦 − 2 ) = 0
The remainder is 0. This means that ( 2y – 1 ) is a factor of ( 6𝑦 3 − 17𝑦 2 +
11𝑦 − 2 ). Therefore, ( 6𝑦 3 − 17𝑦 2 + 11𝑦 − 2 ) ÷ ( 2y − 1) = 3𝑦 2 −7𝑦 + 2

There are, on average, ( 3𝑦 2 −7𝑦 + 2 ) households in a barangay.

Illustrative Example 5 :
A garden that is 4 meters wide and 6 meters long is to have a uniform border,
such that the area of the border is the same as the area of the garden. Find
the width of the border.

Solution :
A = length x width
𝐴𝑔𝑎𝑟𝑑𝑒𝑛 = 4m x 6m = 48𝑚2
Total area of the garden is equal to the uniform border 2(4)(6)=48.

Let x represents the uniform border which is equal to 2x.

The width is equal to the expression ( 4 + 2x )
And length is equal to the expression ( 6 + 2x )

https://www.algebra.com/algebra/homework/Polynomials-and-rational-

Working equation is ( 4 + 2x ) ( 6 + 2x ) = 48
24 + 20x + 4𝑥 2 = 48
4𝑥 2 + 20𝑥 + 24 = 48
2
4𝑥 + 20𝑥 + 24 − 48 = 0
4𝑥 2 + 20𝑥 − 24 = 0 Divide by 4
2
𝑥 + 5𝑥 − 6 = 0 Factor the polynomial
(x+6)(x–1)=0
Zero Product Property
x+6=0 or x–1=0

(consider only positive values for measurement)

The width of the border is 1m.
