II. Discussion
Protection of Biodiversity from Premature Extinction
We are in the middle of an alarming biodiversity crisis: the rapid decrease in the number of
species on Earth. Our knowledge of biology helps us to slow down, even reverse, this process, and
conserve what remains for future generations. Conservation biology is a goal- oriented field of biology
whose aim is to counteract the biodiversity crisis. Conservation may focus our protecting the individual
endangered species ( species approach) or restore the environment where they live ( ecosystem
approach).
Protecting the Species
Captive breeding entails the mating of animals in zoos or wildlife reserves. When these captive
animals give birth, biologists care for their young and release them into the wild when they are strong or
old enough to survive in their natural habitat.
The endangered Species Act of the Philippines prohibits the trade of products made endangered
or threatened species. The establishment of gene banks, botanical gardens, and wildlife farms also help
protect our species. More than 100 gene banks in the world house about 3 million seed samples. Gene
banks are expensive to maintain because seeds must restored in the refrigerated or low- humidity
environments so that they are viable for planting in the future.
Preserving the Ecosystem
The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) designated
biosphere reserves around the world under the project Man and Biosphere (MAB) Programme. Theses
natural sites are chosen for their outstanding universal value and are declared as protected areas under
the 1972 World Heritage Treaty. Biosphere reserves are also used for scientific experimentation on

applying innovative strategies to better manage terrestrial, marine, coastal, and freshwater resources and
practicing sustainable development from local to international scales.
Palawan was declared a biosphere reserve in 1990. It includes the two World Heritage sites, the
Tubbataha Reef Marine Park and the Puerto-Princesa Subterranean River National Park.
The term biodiversity hotspot was coined by British ecologist Norman Myers in 1988 to help
solve the dilemma of conservationists identifying areas to protect. These places exhibit a high degree of
endemism, where most of its species can only be found in those region. The Philippine is one of many
biodiversity hotspots.
