Chapter Three ISO 9000 - Quality Management Planning: - Project Requirements

The ISO 14000 standards provide a framework for organizations to manage their environmental responsibilities. The standards are based on a plan-do-check-act model and aim to help businesses reduce waste and use resources more efficiently. Key elements of an environmental management system as defined in ISO 14001 include establishing an environmental policy, planning objectives and processes to meet goals, implementing procedures, monitoring performance, and reviewing progress to support continual improvement. Adherence to ISO 14000 standards is voluntary and intended to help organizations systematically address their environmental impact.

MANAGEMENT PLANNING

Introduction

• ISO Created by the International Organization for

Standardization, a non-governmental organization (NGO)
established in 1947, located in Switzerland.
• ISO is not an acronym in Greek - from the Greek iso,
meaning equal.
• ISO is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies from over 157 countries.
• ISO has more than 16,500 international standards.

by ZELALEM M 15-Feb-21 2
ISO-9000
• ISO 9000 Introduced in 1996 and is a series of
environmental management standards developed and
published by the International Organization for
Standardization ( ISO ) for organizations.
• The ISO 9000 standards provide a guideline or framework
for organizations that need to systematize and improve
their environmental management efforts.

by ZELALEM M 15-Feb-21 3
ISO 14000
• The ISO 14000 standards are not
designed to aid the enforcement of
environmental laws and do not regulate
the environmental activities of
organizations.
• Adherence to these standards is
voluntary.
by ZELALEM M 15-Feb-21 4
The ISO 9000 series includes
standards for;
• Environmental management systems(EMS)
• Environmental auditing (EA)
• Environmental performance evaluation(EPE)
• Environmental labeling (classification)
• Life-cycle assessment
• Environmental aspects in product standards

by ZELALEM M 15-Feb-21 5
ISO 14000
• If an organization is already ISO 9000-
certified, the implementation of ISO 14001
does not take as long.
• The ISO 14001 standard is the only ISO
14000 standard that allows an organization
to be registered or "certified.
by ZELALEM M 15-Feb-21 6
Purpose of ISO 14000
ISO 14000 is being designed to achieve several
purposes:
 To make it more difficult for countries to use
environmental issues as profession barriers,
 To create a universal set of standards to help
businesses meet their commitment to the
environment,
 To allow companies to avoid multiple registrations,
inspections and certifications as their products
cross from country to country.
by ZELALEM M 15-Feb-21 7
The benefits of ISO-14000
• Reduced raw materials/resource use;
• Reduced energy consumption;
• Improved process efficiency;
• Reduced waste generation and disposal costs;
• Utilization of recoverable resources;
• Potentially lower insurance premiums.

by ZELALEM M 15-Feb-21 8
ISO 9000 Model
• The ISO 14001 standard is the most important
standard within the ISO 14000 series.
• ISO 14001 specifies the requirements of an
environmental management system (EMS) for
small to large organizations.

• The ISO 14001 standard is based on the Plan-

Check-Do-Review-Improve cycle.

ISO model

by ZELALEM M 15-Feb-21 10
The ISO 14000 standards are following the Plan-Do-
Check-Act (PDCA) strategy, a self-improving loop
including the following steps:

 Plan: Launching of a confirmed policy by the

management.
Planning of objectives in relation with this policy
 Do: Implementation of the provisions specified in
the plan
 Check: Verification and assessment of results and
progress achieved
 Act: Review for continual improvement of the
system

ISO/TC 207

• ISO/TC 207 is the ISO Technical Committee responsible for

developing the ISO 14000 series of environmental
management standards and of guidance documents.
• ISO/TC 207 has worked to develop international standards
that are practical, useful and usable for business of all sizes,
in countries at every stage of development.

by ZELALEM M 15-Feb-21 12
The Subcommittees (SC), Working Groups
(WG) and Terminology Coordination Groups
(TCG) of ISO/TC 207 are producing standards
and guidance documents in the following
areas:
 SC 1 - Environmental Management Systems;
 SC 2 - Environmental Auditing & Related
Investigations;
 SC 3 - Environmental Labelling;
 SC 4 - Environmental Performance Evaluation;
 SC 5 - Life Cycle Assessment;
 TCG - Terms and Definitions;
 WG 4 - Environmental Communications; and
 WG 5 - Climate Change.

The standards of the ISO 14000 series fall into two major
groups
1. Organization-oriented standards
Provide comprehensive guidance for establishing, maintaining and
evaluating an environmental management system (EMS);
2. Product-oriented standards
Determine the environmental impacts of products and services over
their life cycles and the environmental labels and declarations

ISO-14001-Environmental Management
System(EMS)
 An Environmental Management System (EMS) is a
set of management procedures that allows an
organization to identify, evaluate and reduce the
environmental impact of its activities.
 Perhaps the best known of these standards is ISO
14001, the standard for environmental management
systems.
 The ISO 14001 standard includes information on all
of the elements needed to develop an environmental
management system in an organization
by ZELALEM M 15-Feb-21 15
The expected benefits from an EMS include:

improved overall environmental performance,

identification of pollution prevention opportunities
improved compliance,
enhanced operational control and efficiency,
cost savings,
reduced risk (environmental, health and safety)
improved internal communication,
improved external relations and public image,

The key elements of an ISO
14000 EMS
