CONCEPTUAL QUESTIONS
12.1) A man raising his left hand in a plane mirror ,the image Facing
him is raising his right hand .Explain why?
Answer:

This is due to lateral inversion (it is the effect produced by Plane

mirrors in reversing image from left to right). Plane Mirror give us an
image which is virtual ,erect and same size of object.
12.2) Why light rays are refracted at a boundary between two
Materials?
Answer:
Because of difference in the density of both media, change in
Speed between the two materials, change in refractive index
Of both materials, due to change in direction the light waves
Bends.
12.3) Explain why fish under water appears to be at a different
Depth below the surface than it actually is. Does it appear
Deeper or shallower?
Answer:

This is due to refraction of light. The angle of refraction is

Greater than angle of incidence . For an observer the apparent
Depth (image position) of fish look less than its real depth
(object position). The fish appear shallower (little depth) because of
its image form at raised position in water due to refraction of light.
12.4) Why or why not concave mirrors are suitable for makeup?
Answer:
Concave mirrors are suitable for makeup when a person stand
Between principal focus and pole of concave mirror. He sees
Enlarged ,erect and virtual image of his face. Other than this
Position no image will form. That’s why concave mirror of long
Focal length is used for shaving and makeup.
12.5) Why driver’s side mirror in many car are convex rather
Than concave?
Answer:
Driver’s prefer convex mirror because these mirror produced
Virtual, erect and small size image of object behind the driver.
Their field of view is very broad. While plane and concave
Mirror lack this property.
12.6) When an optician testing room is small , he uses a mirror
To help him test the eye-sight of patient .Explain why?
Answer:
To increase the distance of eye chart from the patient the
Optician uses plane mirror in a small room. Which tricks the eye
And make space seen larger. The image appear to be the same
Size as the actual face.
12.7) How does the thickness of lens effects its focal length?
Answer:
The thickness of lens is inversely proportional to focal length.
Focal length is the distance between optical centre and
Principal focus. If thickness of lens increase focal length
Become short.
Focal length α 1 / thickness of lens.
