A Read the story below and answer the questions that follow.
There was once an elephant who liked to boast to the other animals in the forest. “I am the
strongest animal in this forest,” he said. “None of you is as strong as me.” He also liked to bully the
other animals. He asked them to bring him the juiciest and sweetest fruit in the jungle and if they
didn’t, he threatened them. “If you don’t, I will destroy your homes.”
The other animals were very frightened of the elephant. One day, there was a thunderstorm.
There was bright, scary lightning and loud thunder. The trees swayed and the branches snapped.
All the animals were frightened and ran to find shelter. The smaller ones scrambled into burrows
in the ground. The bigger ones hid in caves.
The elephant did not move. He said, “I am stronger than the wind. I am not afraid.” Suddenly,
there was a flash of bright light followed by a loud crack. Lightning had struck a large tree and it
fell onto the elephant. He was caught by surprise and sank to his knees. He could not get up and
trumpeted loudly in pain.
The other animals heard the elephant but they were too scared to come out of their shelters.
After the storm, one by one, the animals came out. They found the elephant pinned under the tree.
They worked together to push the tree trunk away and helped the elephant to get up.
The elephant was very grateful and thanked them. He said, “I thought I was stronger than all
of you but I was wrong.” From that day on, he never bullied the other animals again.

KUALA PILAH: Hours of heavy rain triggered flash floods and disrupted traffic flow in Kuala
Pilah, Negeri Sembilan. Floodwaters in the town centre rose to more than two metres at
3.00 p.m. yesterday, but subsided after four hours.
Owners of business outlets had a difficult time cleaning up the thick layer of mud and
debris. Most shops were littered with damaged products and rubbish carried in by the flood.
Many owners recalled experiencing a similar incident that happened there about ten years
ago.
Floodwaters also badly damaged the roads leading to the town, leaving
them with huge cracks and sinkholes. The damage caused a massive traffic
congestion, resulting in vehicles coming to a standstill until the waters receded.
At the height of the flood, vehicles parked along the road in town were totally submerged in
water. The damage caused by the flood is estimated to exceed ten million ringgit.

Two friends, Hassan and Awang, were walking along a path on the edge of the forest when
they suddenly spotted a big black bear ambling towards them. They were not sure whether the
bear had seen them, but not wanting to take any risks, Hassan ran away, climbed up the nearest
tree and hid amongst the high branches. Awang, who walked with a limp, could not run away
quickly enough. So, he dropped to the ground and pretended to be dead.
The bear soon reached the spot where Awang lay ‘dead’ on the ground. Awang kept very
still, doing his best to hold his breath. The bear sniffed around his head for a few minutes and
then just walked away. Hassan quickly scrambled down the tree and ran towards his friend.
“Phew!” he said. “That was close. From up in the tree, I could have sworn that the bear whispered
something in your ear!”
“It did”, said Awang. “It told me to be more careful in future when setting out on a long

In the olden days, Thunder and Lightning lived on the earth. However, the king of the
land made them live at the far end of the village, as far as possible from the villagers.
Thunder was an old mother sheep, and Lightning was her son, a ram. Whenever
Lightning got angry he used to go about burning houses and knocking down trees. He
would cause so much damage to the village. Sometimes, he even accidentally killed
people. Whenever he did these things, his mother would call out to him in a very loud
voice to stop him from doing any more damage, but Lightning never listened to her.
Finally, the village people could not stand it any longer and complained to the king.
The king ordered Thunder, and her son, Lightning, to leave the village and chased
them far into the forest. Unfortunately, this did not do much good because when Lightning
got angry he would set the forest on fire and the flames would spread to the farms and
destroy the villagers’ homes and crops.
The villagers complained again, and so the king had no choice but to banish both
mother and son from the earth forever. He made them live in the sky, where they could
not cause so much destruction.

Ingredients:
2 cups of finely chopped nuts
10 bananas
300 grams of dark chocolate pieces
2 tablespoons of oil
Ice cream
Maria :
What are you making for the party tomorrow?
Salmah :
I’m making my special Choc-nut Bananas dessert.
Maria :
Is it difficult to make?
Salmah :
It’s easy-peasy. For starters, we need to prepare two cups of chopped nuts, ten bananas,
300 grams of dark chocolate pieces, two tablespoons of oil and some ice cream.
Maria : So what is the first step?
Salmah : First, place the nuts on an oven tray. Toast the nuts in the oven for five minutes, then allow it
to cool. Next, melt the chocolate pieces over hot water and stir in the oil. Spread the nuts on
a plate. Peel the bananas. Now, one at a time, dip the bananas in the melted chocolate. Use
a spoon to cover the bananas with chocolate. Then coat the bananas with nuts. Arrange the
bananas on a tray and place them in the refrigerator until set. Finally, place the bananas in
dessert bowls and serve with ice cream.

Grandpa : They are carts pulled by buffaloes. We sat in the cart and fanned ourselves on a
hot day. The carts were also used to carry goods.
Shamsul : Did you have roads then?
Grandpa : Yes, we did but they were not tarred. When it rained, the roads were like rivers
of mud. Carts splashed mud everywhere. When it was hot, the wind blew dust
everywhere.
Shamsul : Tell me how you had to collect firewood so that your mother could cook.
Grandpa : Well, I had to go into the jungle to chop small trees. There were no tractors or
power saws back then. I only had an axe. Then my mother would start a fire

Once upon a time there lived a cloth merchant in a village with his wife and two
children. They were indeed quite well off. They had a beautiful hen which laid an
egg every day. It was not an ordinary egg, rather, a golden egg. But the man was
not satisfied with just one egg a day. He wanted to get all the golden eggs from his
hen at one single go. So, one day he thought hard and at last he decided to kill the
hen and get all the eggs.
So, the next day when the hen laid a golden egg, the man caught hold of it,
took a sharp knife, chopped off its neck and cut its body open. There was nothing
but blood and no trace of any egg at all. He was sad because now he would not
get even one single egg.

One hot, sunny day, Dora the ant was searching for some water to drink.
After walking around for some time, she came upon a spring. To reach the
spring, she had to climb up a blade of grass. While making her way up, Dora
suddenly slipped and fell into the water.
Dora the ant struggled in the water. She waved her arms about frantically.
Luckily for her, Mr Pigeon was high up in a nearby tree. He saw Dora in the
water and quickly swooped down to help her. He picked up a leaf and dropped
it into the water, next to Dora. Dora managed to climb onto the leaf. It carried
her safely to dry ground.
As Dora was drying herself off, she spotted a hunter nearby. The hunter had
a gun in his hands. He was taking aim. He was about to shoot Mr Pigeon! Dora
quickly sprang into action. She ran as fast as she could towards the hunter, and
when she reached his right leg, she bit him as hard as she could on his ankle.
