Dr. Keith Rowley's Ethical Leadership

This document outlines the structure for analyzing an individual's ethical leadership based on three dimensions: communicating values and ethics, role modeling ethical behavior, and using rewards to encourage ethical conduct. The analysis examines a local leader, Dr. Keith Rowley, and whether he displays these dimensions of ethical leadership through examples from reports and observations. Each dimension is discussed in a separate paragraph with references to support arguments about the extent to which the leader's behavior reflects that dimension. The conclusion synthesizes these analyses to determine if the leader can be considered ethical based on outcomes related to follower decision-making and satisfaction.

Dr.

Keith Rowley’s Ethical Leadership

Introduction
Here, provide a brief background on Dr. Keith Rowley, the meaning of leadership in
general, and an explanation of ethical leadership. At this stage, do not make any connections
between Dr. Rowley and ethical leadership because the analysis follows in the subsequent
paragraphs/subsections. The thesis statement at the end of the first paragraph will then be
something like, “In this paper, I analyze the extent to which Dr. Rowley displays the three
dimensions of ethical leadership including, communicating a message of values and ethics,
visibly and intentionally role modeling ethical behaviour, and using a reward system to hold
followers accountable for ethical conduct.”

Communicating a message of values and ethics

Describe and explain the first dimension of ethical leadership, i.e., communicating a
message of values and ethics. For conceptual explanations like these, paraphrase from scholarly
publications like the readings for the course. Then, analyze the extent to which Dr. Rowley
shows this specific behaviour. Be sure to use examples that support the display or lack of this
behaviour in particular. For these examples, support your arguments with evidence from
newspapers, reports, observations, etc. The supporting evidence can also be direct quotes used by
Dr. Rowley from television broadcasts.

Visibly and intentionally role modeling ethical behaviour

Follow the same format as paragraph 2, but for the second dimension of ethical
leadership, i.e., visibly and intentionally role modeling ethical behaviour.

Using a reward system to hold followers accountable for ethical conduct

Follow the same format as paragraph 2, but for the third dimension of ethical leadership,
i.e., using a reward system to hold followers accountable for ethical conduct.
Note that you are critically analyzing the leader’s behaviour for each of the leadership
dimensions. Therefore, you should discuss the extent to which Dr. Rowley displays each of the
ethical leadership behaviours – he may sometimes show a lack of these behaviours!

Conclusion
Summarize your arguments from paragraphs 2 to 4 to arrive at a conclusion as to whether
or not Dr. Rowley can be considered an ethical leader. Here, you may also draw reference to
outcomes of ethical leadership to reinforce your conclusion. For instance, I might say, “… The
above analysis shows that Dr, Rowley does x, y, and x, and thus does not appear to be an ethical
leader. This stance is further reinforced by the outcomes of Dr. Rowley’s leadership. For
instance, Dr. Rowley’s followers do not appear to engage in ethical decision making, e.g., xxx.
Dr. Rowley’s followers also appear to be dissatisfied, e.g., xxx.”
Note that you can use subheadings as I did here if you wish.
