Conditional Sentence (Type 2) "Theory"

if clause : simple past tense

main clause : past future tense (S + would + V1)

Tipe ini digunakan untuk menyatakan suatu tindakan/keadaan yang


berlawanan/ bertentangan dengan kenyataan pada saat ini. Sebenarnya
syarat dalam if-clause bisa saja terpenuhi, tetapi kemungkinannya sangat
kecil.

Contoh:

If you studied hard, you would pass the exam.

(Real fact : You don’t study hard.)

If I had a lot of money, I would lend you some.

(Real fact : I don’t have much money.)

Would bisa juga diganti dengan could atau might.

Contoh:

You might be successful if you tried harder.

If I had some information, I could let you know.

Use

It is theoretically possible to fulfil a condition which is given in the if-clause.

Form
if clause main clause

Simple Past would + infinitive


or
could + infinitive
or
might + infinitive

Examples
If I studied, I would pass the exams.

If I studied, I could pass the exams.

If I studied, I might pass the exams.

The if-clause can be at the beginning or at the end of the sentence.

If I studied, I would pass the exams.

I would pass the exams if I studied.

Conditional Sentences Type 2


Form

if + simple past, would /could + simple form

Function: to talk about situations that are contrary to fact, the situation that are opposite to the
true situation
Example:

1. If I had enough money, I would buy car.


True situation: I don’t have enough money so I cannot buy car

2. If I were you, I would take her as my fiancé


True situation: I am not you, I cannot take her as my fiancé

Example 1 and 2 the speakers are talking about present or future situations but they use the
simple past in the ‘if clause’
Would expresses intended or desired result

Practice:
1. True Situation: I don’t have enough time
If I (have) ….. enough time, I (go) …. To the park

2. True situation: I don’t have enough money


If I (have ) ….. enough money, I (fly) …. Home this weekend

3. True situation: It’s cold today


If it (be, not) ….. cold today, I (go) …. Swimming

4. True situation: I don’t know how to swim


If I (know) …… how to swim, I (go) …. To the beach with you

5. True situation: I don’t understand the sentence


If I (understand) ….. the sentence, I (explain) ……. It to you

Explanation: Conditional sentences - type II
Put the verbs in brackets into the gaps. Form a Conditional sentence - type II.

Example: If I __ (to go) to the cinema, I ________ (to watch) an interesting film.

Answer: If I went to the cinema, I would watch an interesting film.
