Philosophy of Education

I’ve always enjoyed teaching others. Regardless of subject, the ability to help others with

their understanding of the world has always made me feel very fulfilled. One of my biggest

strengths has always been explaining complex ideas in simpler terms. In my experience coaching

children I’ve learned how managing attention is key, and giving simple but accurate directions is

imperative. Teaching kids is all about learning how to think like kids, and this is something I’ve

become very practiced in during my time volunteering at CCSD events and classroom activities.

Throughout this course, we’ve learned about the history of education and how it has

changed and adapted over the years to best prepare our students for the future. Something that

was heavily influenced in the reading was the lack of access to proper education for all students.

Factors like ethnicity, location, spoken language, and physical ability amongst others affect the

quality of education students are receiving. Its important to identify the shortcomings of the

educational system if we ever hope to improve upon it. Learning about segregation and how our

schools have failed minority groups in the past has reinforced the idea that no system is perfect,

and examining it from the classroom level is the first step in making sure everyone receives an

equal and fair education. I will consider myself a successful teacher if I can guarantee this

environment, and this will achieve the best possible community of learners amongst my students.

Throughout the reading, I have picked up some key strategies and ideas for how to best

deliver a well-rounded educational experience to my students. Firstly, diversity and multicultural

learning is going to be a major element in my classroom. By taking the time to research the

demographic of my school I’ll get a better sense of the mix in my classroom. After establishing a

good baseline of the students I’ll be teaching I will take it a step further by encouraging the

students to share their culture with the class. This will expose the students to their community

and get them used to the idea that the people around them come from a variety of backgrounds

and cultures, and that it is important to respect and share these cultures together to create the best

learning experience. The other highly effective way I will be incorporating this is through the

classroom to home connection. Students families will be encouraged to become part of the

learning process. This is a great way for students to meet the community around them and to

further encourage the sharing of background and culture in the classroom.

The road ahead is still paved with a lot of work if I am to become an effective educator.

To start, I will be finishing my first round of education courses at CSN, retaking any that I

haven’t fully grasped yet. These courses are a great introduction to teaching, and they teach

valuable fundamentals and history that are necessary to have a successful classroom. Along with

these education courses, I will be volunteering at various CCSD events as I have in the past. This

has been a good way for me to make an impact in the educational community, and served as am

introduction to various ages of students I will be teaching. Now with the lens of my limited

edicational background, I can use these experiences to develop as an educator and apply these

interactions within my own classroom. As well as volunteering, I will be applying for my

substitute license over winter break. This will give me my first experiences teaching and let me

really get a sense for what its all about. I will try to teach a wide variety of ages and subjects, as

well as gain some experience in special education. This will allow me to find my areas of
strength as a teacher, and give me exposure to classroom management across different situations

and class organizations.

I’m very excited to step into the classroom. Learning how to become an educator has

been extremely challenging, but also very rewarding. I’m passionate about children's education

and I hope that I can use my skills to change the lives of as many students as possible.
