TRIAL EXAMINATION I 2019
MALAYSIA HIGHER SCHOOL CERTIFICATE
Instructions to candidates:
DO NOT OPEN THIS QUESTION PAPER UNTIL YOU ARE TOLD TO DO SO.
1. One hundred students sat for a test. The times taken by the students to complete the test are
summarized in the table below.
(a) Calculate the mean time taken, to one decimal place. [3 marks]
(b) Draw a histogram to display the above data. [4 marks]
2. A box contains 2 green apples and 2 red apples. Apples are taken from the box, one at a time,
without replacement. When both red apples have been taken, the process stops. The random
variable X is the number of apples which have been taken when the process stops.
1
(i) Show that P X 3 . [2 marks]
3
(ii) Draw up the probability distribution table for X. [2 marks]
Another box contains 2 yellow peppers and 5 orange peppers. Three peppers are taken at
random from the box without replacement.
(iii) Given that at least 2 of the peppers taken from the box are orange, find the probability
that all 3 pepper are orange. [3 marks]

3. The time in minutes taken by people to read a certain booklet is modelled by a random
variable T with the probability density function given by
1
, 4 t 9,
f t 2 t
0, otherwise
(i) Find the time within which 90% of people finish reading the booklet. [3 marks]
(ii) Find E T and Var T . [6 marks]
4. The average lifetime of a light bulb is 3000 hours with a standard deviation of 696 hours. A
simple random sample of 36 bulbs is taken.
(a) What are the expected value, standard deviation, and shape of the sampling
distribution of x ? [3 marks]
(b) What is the probability that the average life time in the sample will be between
2670.56 and 2809.76 hours? [3 marks]
(c) How large of a sample needs to be taken to provide a 0.01 probability that the average
life time in the sample will be equal to or greater than 3219.24 hours [3 marks]
5. A magazine wants to launch an online version, but only if more than 20% of its subscribers
would subscribe to it. A random survey of 400 subscribers indicated that 90 of them would
be interested. Perform a test, at the 5% significance level, to determine whether the online
version magazine will be launch or not. [5 marks]
6. The results of a random sample of children with pain from musculoskeletal injuries treated
with acetaminophen, ibuprofen or codeine are shown in the table below.
Perform a test at the 10% significance level, to determine whether the treatment and result are
independent. [8 marks]

88 51 22 48 37 41 25 37 38 59 59 68
(a) Display the above data in an order stemplot and state the median. [4 marks]
(b) Find the mean and standard deviation of the data. [3 marks]
(c) Draw a boxplot to represent the data. [4 marks]
(d) State whether the mean or median is more suitable as a measure of location to
represent the data. Justify your answer. [2 marks]
(e) Calculate the Pearson of skewness and comment your answer. [2 marks]
8. During observations on the height of 200 students the following data were observed.
(a) Test at 0.05 level to see if the height of the students could be modelled by a normal
distribution with mean 172 and standard deviation 6. [12 marks]
(b) Describe how you would modify this test if the mean and the standard deviation were
unknown. [3 marks]
