Changes in Properties of Materials When Mixed with Other Materials

Background Information for Learners

When two or more materials are combined, a mixture is formed. Mixture is a

combination of two or more substances in which the substances retain their distinct
identities.
Solid materials can be mixed/combined with other solid materials. Mixed
materials can be classified depending on the appearance of the resulting mixture. It
can be heterogeneous or homogeneous.
Heterogeneous mixture is a mixture of substances that can be identified/
distinguished from one another and can easily be separated.

Homogeneous mixture is a mixture of substances that cannot be

distinguished from each other and cannot be easily separated.

The properties of each substance in the mixtures do not change. Their size,
shape, color remains the same even after mixing.
Solid materials can be mixed/combined with liquid materials. Some solid
materials can be completely dissolved in the liquid materials, but others do not.
Liquid materials can be mixed with other liquid materials. While some liquid
materials can be completely mixed with the other liquids while some do not. Two
liquids that do not mix form two layers like what you see with oil and water.

Learning Competency with code

The learners should be able to describe changes in properties of materials when
exposed to certain conditions such as temperature or when mixed with other
materials. (S4MT-Ig-h-6)

Activity 1 – Mix and Match

Directions: Choose a solid material in box A that can be mixed with the materials in
box B. Then identify what type of mixture is formed (homogeneous or heterogeneous
mixture). Write your answers in the table below.

A B
flour candies salt corn starch
books ballpen chocolates pencil
sugar notebooks

Activity 2– Check it out!
Direction: Put a on the corresponding box if the solid material can easily be
dissolved in liquid materials.

1. pebble

2. egg shell

3. sugar

4. coffee creamer

5. mayonnaise

6. flour

7. powdered juice

8. baking powder

9. marbles

10. bean seed

Activity 3 – Color Me

Directions: Color the circle blue if the mixture can be mixed completely and red if it
is not.

1. Hot water and milk 6. Iodized salt and vinegar

2. Alcohol and ginger 7. Hot water and sugar

3. Malunggay and water 8. Oil and garlic

4. Powdered milk and water 9. Onion and soy sauce

5. Water and powder dye 10. Water and flour

Activity 4 –Perform and Sketch
Direction: Mix the pair of mixtures in each number then identify whether it is a
heterogeneous or homogeneous mixture. Draw the resulting mixture in the third
column.
* Needs parental supervision
