A 80 year old female widow is suffering from severe peripheral vascular disease and has been
told that a non – healing lesion on his foot must be managed with either vascular bypass
surgery or amputation of the foot. Although the surgeon believes that the foot can be saved with
bypass, the man elects to have the amputation. His main reason is that the site will heal more
quickly and allow him to resume normal activities sooner. He asks for the nurse’s opinion.
