To keep abreast of progress in industry, Australian standards arc subject to continuous review and are kept
up-to-date by the issue of amendments or new editions as necessary. It is important therefore that standards
users ensure that their standards arc up-to-date. Full details of all SAA publications will be found in the
Annual List of Australian Standards; these details are supplemented by listings in the SAA monthly journal
'The Australian Standard'. Information on the Annual List and 'The Australian Standard' may be obtained
from any sales office of the Association, where details are also available of the current status of individual
standards. Suggestions for improvements to published standards, addressed to the head office of the
Association, are welcomed.

This standard was issued in draft form for comment as D R 8/2/6.

CORRESPONDING ISO STANDARDS

At present there are no ISO standards covering high-strength structural bolts, nuts
and associated washers. There are, however, several draft proposals at the final voting
(D IS) stage within ISO and it is expected t hat these wi 11shortly be issued as Internationa I
standards.
This Appendix does not cover the complete range of ISO documents for structural
bolts, nuts and washers, but only those which are either technically equivalent to
those given in this standard, or those which would comply with the requirements of
AS 1511 and which may be of interest to thc Australian construction industry.
Details of the ISO documents are as follows:
(a) ISO/ DIS 74] I-High Strength Structural Bolts-Thread Lengths According
to ISO 888. Bolts o[property cla.l·s8.8c)' gil'£>nin this ISO standard arc technical/I'
identical with those giFen in this Australian standard exccpt [or the M2()
diameter he.'wgon si::e and the marking and designation requireinents.
(b) ISO/ DIS 4775-High Strength Structural Nuts--Product Grade B. Nuts o[
property class 8S given in this ISO standard are technica/ll' identical "'ith tho.l:e
given in this A ustralian standard ex('ept for the ,\12() diamcter hexagon size
and the marking and designation requirements.
(c) ISO/ DIS 7415--Hardened and Tempered Plain Hole Circular Washers for
High Strength Structural rVashers gil'en in this IS'(J standard are tech-
Bolts.
nicalll' the same as thosc given in this Australian standard
(d) ISO/DIS 7412--High Strength Structural Bolts-Short Thread Length Type.
There is no equivalent Australian standard and therefore the ISO standard
should be used directly. For information the nominal thread lengths arc shown
in Table A I.
It should be noted that D IS 741 ] and D IS 7412 both ma ke provision for property class
10.9S bolts and the corresponding property class 10S nuts arc covered in DIS 4775.
Designers requiring bolts and nuts of these higher property classes than in AS ] 252
arc referred to these ISO standards.
Designers and constructors arc urged to use extreme caution when specifying
and using high-strength structural bolts of property class 10.9S in accordance with
either ISO/OIS 741101' ISO/DIS 7412, in the zinc-coated condition. Experience in
the U.S.A, with zinc-coated bolts of this property class has shown that there is a
significant danger of embrittlement due to corrosion in situ, to such a degree that the
use of such fasteners is prohibited in North America. This prohibition does not apply,
however, in Europe where it is understood that the tightening practices arc somewhat
different. \,

NON-PREFERRED SIZES

81 INTRODUCTION. Although it is considered that the range of nominal sizes

included in this standard is adequate for thc majority of applications, this Appcndix
provides supplementary information on non-preferred sizes of structural bolts, nuts
and washcrs. It should he noted that the use of these sizes is discouragcd and every
endeavour should be made to select a product from the standard range.
It should be furt her noted tha t the M 12 d ia meter struct ura I bolts, nuts a nd washers
have also been designated as a non-prcfcrred size because of its relativcly low demand
for structural applications. This aspect is also in agreement with international doc-
umentation on structural bolting.

82 HIGH-STRENGTH STRUCTURAL 80LTS. Information on non-preferred

structural bolt sizes is given in Tables 13I to 134.

83 HIGH-STRENGTH STRUCTURAL NUTS. Information on non-preferred

structural nut sizes is given in Tables 135 and 136.

84 STIH)CTUI~AL WASHERS. General dimensions of non-preferred round

structural washer sizes arc givcn in Table 137.

ASSEMBLY TEST FOR COATED FASTENERS

Cl SCOPE. This Appendix sets out the method of testing the anti-seizing prop-
erties of an assemhly of structural holts and nuts with corrosion-preventive coatings.

C2 ASSEMBLY. A test assembly shall comprise a bolt. nut and washer complying
with the relevant requirements of this standard. supplied with a corrosion-preventive
coating.

CJ TEST PROCEDURE. The test shall be carried out on structural oolts and nuts
in the condition as supplied by the manufacturer and shall he in accordance with and
include a lubricant coating as required by Clause 3.3.5.3. There shall be no other
lubricant coating applied for the purpose of this test. Where the two foregoing condi-
tions cannot be satisfied. then the anti-seizing test shall he by agreement hetween the
purchaser and the manufacturer. but a luhricant coating shall still be applied. If the
test is carried out by the purchaser. then he should ensure that the storage conditions
and storage time arc such that they will not have significantly promoted deterioration
of the luhrieant coating.
The bolt with nut and washer selected for testing shall be placed with the washer
directlv under the nut in a steel joint with a total thickness such that where the thread
length ·permits. there are not less than six full bolt threads located hetween the hearing
surface of the bolt head and nut. The diameter of the holes in the joint shall be I mm to
2 mm larger than the nominal diameter of the bolts. The nut shall be initiallvtightened
to produce a load in the holt of not less than 10 percent of the specified proof load.
After this initial tightening. the holt and nut position shall he marked to provide the
starting point for the rotational movement to be measured. During that rotation, the
holt head shall be restrained from turning. and the final tensioning shall he completed
without stopping the motion of the nut. The nut shall be rotated in :Iceordance with the
requirements of Table Cl from the initial tightening position without fracture of the
holt or stripping of the halt or nut thread.

RECOMMENDED GAUGE AND METHOD FOR CHECKING
THE SQUARENESS OF THE THREAD TO THE FACE OF
THE NUT
The nut shall be screwed by hand on to a tapered threaded mandrel as shown in Fig.
01, until the thread of the nut is tight on the thread of the mandrel. A sliding sleeve
having a face diameter equal to the minimum distance across flats of the nut, square
with the axis of the mandrel thread, shall then be brought into contact with the leading
face of the nut. With the sleeve in this position it shall not be possible for a feeler gauge
of a thickness equal to the 'squareness tolerance' to enter between the leading face of
the nut and the face of the sleeve.

PROPERTIES

Where tests are required for audit inspection purposes, a lot shall consist of all items
(bolts, nuts or washers) of the same property class and size (diameter and length) made

STAR PRINTERY
STANDARDS
ASSOCIATION
OF
AUSTRALIA

The Standards Association of Australia was founded in 1922

as the Australian Commonwealth Engineering Standards
Association, and was incorporated by Royal Charter in 1950.
The principal function of the Association is to prepare
and publish Australian Standards and to promote their
adoption. Standards are in the form of specifications for
materials and products, codes of sound or safe practice,
methods of testing, nomenclature, etc. They are prepared
by representative committees which co-ordinate manufac-
turing capacity and production efficiency with the users'
reasonable needs. They seek to achieve fitness for purpose,
simplified production and distribution, replacement inter-
changeability, and adequate variety of choice without
wasteful diversity.
Australian Standards are prepared only after a full
enquiry has shown that the project is endorsed as a desirable
onc and worth the effort involved. The work is based on
voluntary agreement, and recognition of the community of
interest of producer and consumer.
The Association's work is conducted solely in the
national interest and without profit, the only expenses being
salaries, printing and office administration. It is financed
from grants received from the Government, subscriptions
from members, and sales of its publications. Government
and private enterprise both benefit from the Association's
activities, to the financing of which both should contribute
equitably.
Membership of the Association is open to individuals,
associations, industrial and commercial companies, and
public and locaf authorities. Enquiries concerning member-
ship are always welcomed.
