Homework Policy

• All homework should be submitted through Ninova as a “.pdf” file. No hard copy
submission is needed/allowed. If you have MATLAB code please zip your files with
the pdf file. DO NOT only upload MATLAB codes for solution.
• Late homework will NOT be accepted.
Mail: uralh@itu.edu.tr
• You can use MATLAB, Mathematica, etc. to solve matrices; however, you have to
show whole matrices and your codes instead of just giving the results.
• You can discuss the solution strategies with your classmates; however, you must do
your solution on your own. Any cheating will not be tolerated.
Q1. Space Truss
The space truss system is given in Fig.1. Determine the followings,

a) Element stiffness matrices

b) Global stiffness matrix
c) Nodal displacements
d) Element forces and stresses
e) Reaction forces

Figure 1. Space Truss

Use: 𝐸 = 200 𝐺𝑃𝑎 and 𝐴 = 60 𝑐𝑚2 for all elements.

Q2. Bar Element with Axially Distributed Load
The bar is subjected to axially distributed load as shown in the Fig.2, where
E = 180 GPa and cross-sectional area 𝐴 = 16𝑥10−4 𝑚2 . Determine the axial
displacement at the left end.
a) Find the exact solution of the system using the strength of materials formulations.
b) Use 1 and 3 elements for the bar for the FEA modelling to find approximate solution
c) Compare the axial displacement results for 3 cases (1 exact and 2 FEA) and give your
comments on them.

Figure 2. Bar Element with Axially Distributed Load

Note: Be careful about where x starts, which affects the axial load. Axial load is the maximum at the
right end.
Q3. Beam Element with Concentrated Load

The beam is subjected to concentrated load as shown in Fig.3, for which 𝐸 = 200 𝐺𝑃𝑎
and the square cross-section of 0.4 m X 0.4 m.
Determine the deflection at the right end and the stresses at the fixed left end by using
a) Strength of material formulations.
b) 3 elements FA modelling
c) Compare the results of a and b.

Q4. Beam Element with Distributed Load
The beam is subjected to distributed loading of 50 kN/m as shown in Fig.4. Determine the
deflection at the midspan of the beam using
a) The exact solution of the strength of materials formulations
b) The FEA modelling of the beam with 2 elements
c) Compare the displacement and stress results for 2 cases (1 exact and 1 FEA) and
discuss the results.
(E=200 GPA, the square cross-section of h=0.25 m x b=0.25 m)
