MODULE 1- KEY TERMS AND CONCEPTS IN MANAGING AND IMPLEMENTING
STANDARDS-BASED GRAMMAR TEACHING

Engage

Thinking about your own understanding of English grammar, would you characterize your
grammar knowledge as mostly explicit, mostly implicit or a combination of both explicit and
implicit? Write your answer below.
Base on personal experience in terms of using grammar or applying grammar in
academic purposes and casual conversations, there’s a difference, on how I observe
proper grammar. I could say my knowledge is both explicit and implicit depending on the
situation, because there are times when I am sure of its form or whether it’s
grammatically appropriate while some other time, I am hesitant.

Explore

Grammar is assessed to give students feedback, see students’ progress and for the teacher to
decide on what to and what not to teach.
1) Do you agree with what the teacher suggested?
I, somewhat agree but do not entirely agree with the teacher’s suggestion.
2) Do you think those are things students are facing?
As a student myself, I agree and I do have the same problem, even though I am familiar
with the rules of grammar, I still get confused most of the time.
3) What can we do to help improve this situation?
I believe that the teacher should pay more attention in what she/he thinks the students
need, particularly to improve their grammar. They could start with the basic rules and
standards of grammar and eventually teach the complicated ones.
While the students should do more reading and writing activities to improve their
language skills while learning grammar.
4) What else is needed?

Elaborate

1. What lessons did you learn from the discussions on the rule of knowing the different
terms and concepts in managing and implementing standard-based grammar?
I have learned new and interesting facts about grammar and words associated with it, its
structures, concepts, and standards. This was the first time I encountered the words;
grammaring, grammaticalizing, and grammaticalization and of course its meaning and
purpose.
I have also learned about the importance of giving feedback to students in order to
monitor their progress in terms of learning grammar and how we could help them
improve their understanding.
2. As a future teacher, I need to know these terms and concepts in managing and
implementing standard-based grammar because…
I need to make sure that I am learning these things correctly to be able to passed it on to
my students and for them not to commit the same mistakes, being able to guide them
accordingly, especially on the use of grammar whether in academic purposes or real-life
situations.
We need to be trust worthy and knowledgeable enough to be able to teach our future
learners what is right, correct, and appropriate, especially when it comes to the
technicality and structures of grammar.

REFLECTIVE LEARNING:

What I learned most in this lesson?

Mostly, I learned about the terms associated with grammar, its importance to both learners and
teachers. Also, on how we give feedbacks to students its different approaches when it comes to
learners improvement and reactions regarding the given feedback.
