2.6.AutomaticStart/StopFunction
2.6.1.Overview
TheF11520dwithmanualtransmissionisequippedwithanadvancedautomaticenginestart-stop
function(MSA).
Theautomaticenginestart-stopfunctionswitchesofftheenginewhenthevehicleisstandingstill,the
transmissionisinneutralandthedriverreleasestheclutch.Theenginestartsautomaticallyassoonas
thedriverdepressestheclutch.
Highlights
• Airconditioningfunctionandavailabilitywithchillreservoirtypeevaporator
• Driverpresencerecognitionwithdriver'sseatbeltandadditionalwithdriver'sdoor.
Undercertaincircumstancesitisnecessarytosuppresstheautomaticenginestart/stopfunction
(switch-offinhibitorandswitch-onrequest).

Automaticenginestart-uppreventionwhenworkinginenginecompartment
Whentheenginehoodisopen,theautomaticenginestart-stopfunctionisdeactivated.Thisprevents
theenginefromstartingupautomaticallywhenworkingintheenginecompartment
TheenginecanbestartedagainwiththeSTART/STOPbutton.
Theenginestart/stopfunctionisreactivatedwhen:
• Theenginehoodisclosedandtheenginestarted
• Theenginehoodisclosedandthevehicleisdrivenataspeed>5km/h.
Safeguardafterexitingvehicle
Whenthedrivergetsoutofthevehicle,theautomaticenginestart-stopfunctionisdeactivatedto
preventtheenginestartingupautomatically.
Thedriverpresencerecognitionwiththebeltbuckleswitchandadditionallywiththedoorcontactis

Twotransmissionversionsareavailabletoensuretheoptimumoverallgearratioformaximumfuel
economyandperformance.GS6-45BZK-transmissionisdesignedforgasolineenginesandthe
GS6-45DZKw-transmissionfordieselengines.
Afurtheradvantageisthesignificantlyimprovedshiftingandhighfueleconomy,resultingfromlow
dragandhighefficiency.
Theshiftinghadbeenimprovedconsiderablyby
• useofnewlydevelopedcarbonfrictionliningsonthesynchromeshunits.
• Newlydevelopedandextremelylowfrictiongearshiftmechanism.
• Lowdraglossesinthegeartrain
• Shortshiftingpaths.
Adrysumplubricationsystemwasusedforthefirsttimetokeepdraglosseslow.Incomparisonto
conventionalimmersiontypelubrication,thispreventssplashingintheoilsump,resultinginlosses.
Thelossesarefurtherreducedbyfriction-optimizedradialshaftseals.
3.4.1.Intermediatebearings
Incountershafttypemanualtransmissionsthemeshingforcespressthemainshaftawayfromthe
countershaft.Thisleadstoadeviationfromtheidealtoothcontactpattern,resultinginasignificant
reductinthetoothstrengthandincreaseinthenoise.
TheK-transmissionisthereforeequippedwithanintermediatebearingwhichsignificantlylimitsshaft
deflection.Thisallowshighertorquestobetransferredincomparisontoconventionaltransmissions
whilesimultaneouslyreducingthetoothnoise.
29
F11Drive.
3.Manualtransmission
3.4.2.Geartrainconcept
ThetorquehasbeenincreasedontheKw-transmissionbychangingthedirectgear(transmission
ratio=1)from5thto4th gear.Thisdecreasesthegearratiointhegearswherestrengthiscritical,thus
reducingtheloadonthetransmissioncomponents.
3.4.3.Drysumplubrication
Inconventionaltransmissionsthegearsarenormallylubricatedbyimmersingtheminoil.Duringthis
processthegearsonthecountershaftdipintothetransmissionoildistributingitthroughouttheentire
transmissioninarandomfashionasthegeartrainrotates.Frequentlyauxiliarydevicessuchasoil
baffleplatesoroilchannelsarerequiredtoensurethattheoilreachesthegearteeth,bearingsand
synchromesh.
TheK-transmissionisthefirsttobeequippedwithadrysumplubricationsystemconsistingof:
• Anoilfilter
• Anoilpump
• Adistributionpipe.
Thisallowsthelubricatingoiltobesuppliedsystematicallytothegearteeth,bearingsand
synchromeshwhileexpendinglessenergythanwithanimmersiontypelubricationsystem.Moreover
thissystematicoildistributionimprovesthethermalbalance,becausethecoolairatthebottomofthe
transmissioncaseisroutedtotheareaoftheintakeopeningforthefilter.Thisprovidescontinuous
coolingforthetransmissionoil.
Theoilfilteralsoimprovesthequalityoftheoilandtherebytheloadtransfercapacityoftheteeth.
3.4.4.Synchromesh
1stand2ndgearsareequippedwithtripleconesynchromesh.Theremaininggearshavesinglecone
synchromesh.Theseareequippedwithnewlydevelopedcarbonfrictionliningstoimprovetheshifting

3.4.5.Connectiondimensions
Theconnectiondimensionsforthetransmissionmountsweretakenoverfromthefamiliarstandard
