What is It
Activity 2:
A. Dehydration
1. What is dehydration?
Dehydration is a state that happens when the loss of body fluids, mostly water, exceeds the
amount that is taken in.
B. Overexertion
REFLECTIVE ESSAY
Importance of knowledge of dehydration, overexertion, hypothermia and
hyperthermia
Dehydration is when someone loses more fluids than he or she takes in. Dehydration
isn't as serious a problem for teens as it can be for babies or young children. But if you ignore
your thirst, dehydration can slow you down.
When someone gets dehydrated, it means the amount of water in the body has
dropped below the level needed for normal body function. Small decreases don't cause
problems, and in most cases, they go completely unnoticed. But not drinking enough to keep up
with the loss of fluid can sometimes make a person feel quite sick.
Based on my experience, having a dehydrated body causes various physical or
health conditions. The main health condition I experience when I am dehydrated is dizziness. As
far as I know our body is almost made up of 70% water so if we sweat the percentage of water
in our body will decrease. When we urinate it will go down again. When we reduce it will
decrease again. So my solution to that problem was to drink eight glasses of water a day.
I learned that the most common cause of dizziness was dehydration. And I also
learned that the most effective way to do this is to drink eight glasses of water every day to keep
the body hydrated.
In the lesson, I also learned that Hypothermia is a life-threatening and serious
condition that occurs when your body loses more heat than it produces causing your
temperature to drop below 95°F (35 °C). Exposures to cold air or water are the most common
causes of hypothermia which is why it often afflicts unprepared campers, hikers, or swimmers.
Hypothermia maybe occurs because of shivering, dizziness, feeling hungry, rapid heart rate,
tiredness, nausea, confusion, rapid breathing, trouble forming words, lack of coordination. And
hyperthermia is a result of the body being over heated. This is caused by physical activity,
moderated high room temperature, start of dehydration because of losing too much sweat
without enough water intake to replenish the body system, solar or reflected radiation, in
appropriate garments that do not allow evaporation or cooling off sweat, a low fitness level and
or added workload of carrying extreme weight. It may occurs maybe because of headache,
dizziness, exhaustion, muscle cramps, dark urine-including dehydration, abdominal cramps or
nausea, rapid heart rate, profuse sweating, clammy skin, fainting
I’ve learned in the lesson that when the body is hard pressed further than its limits
during exhausting or extreme exercise, activity, heat, lack of water or food, and other causes,
overexertion injuries occur.
In conclusion, being dehydrated can cause many condition to our body health. The
best way to prevent them is to drink eight glasses of water daily/every day. We should always
consume that level of water in our body so that we don’t become dehydrated and so that we do
not get sick quickly.
