1. Define and explain Wordsworth's definition of good poetry.
o The spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings. It is the
definition of Wordsworth referring to a good poetry.
According to him, it takes its origin from emotion recollected
in tranquility. Furthermore, in order for the individual to
express theses powerful emotions, one should make use of
common man’s language to provide a better comprehending
experience.

2. According to Wordsworth why—when the style is "manly" and the


subject of some importance—will words metrically arranged long
continue to impart such a pleasure to mankind as he who proves the
extent of that pleasure will be desirous to impart?
o According to Wordsworth’s statement, poetry id the act of
producing excitement with overbalance of pleasure. However,
in the opposition, the excitement is the irregular state of
mind.
3. What was the plan behind the preparation and publication of the
Lyrical Ballads, the collaborated work of Wordsworth and Coleridge?
o the preparation and publication of the Lyrical Ballads, and
the collaboration between the work of Wordsworth and
Coleridge was an experiment that will be used as ascertain by
putting metrical arrangement in the selection of a real
language of men in vivid sensation.
4. What is a poem, according to Coleridge?
o “Poetry is the fragrance of all human knowledge and thoughts.
It is a scent of human passions, language, and emotions.”
This is according to Coleridge as he defines what poem is. He
also thought that in order to be a great poet, one must first
learn to become a profound philosopher. Furthermore, one must
strive to achieve the union between the high finish and the
appropriateness.

5. Explain this statement of Coleridge: "Good Sense is the Body of


poetry, Fancy is the Drapery, motion its Life, and Imagination the
Soul that is everywhere, and in each and forms all into one graceful
and intelligent whole."
o The implication that is strongly suggested by the statement
by Coleridge was that in order for us to discern that the
poem is good, we must look into it whether it has a
combination of good sense and imagination, making it a whole.
6. One argument presented by Coleridge in refuting Wordsworth's choice
of the language of the rustics as the proper language of poetry-
his poetry particularly—is his reference to a principle of
Aristotle that poetry, as poetry, is essentially ideal. Explain.
o The argument presented by Coleridge suggest the fact that
Wordsworth chose Aristotle as his reference, particularly in
the selection of words that were used in his own works.

7. What does the idea of a classic imply, as we define it today?
o With respect today, poetry has changed through the course of
time as anything would. The idea of classic implies that the
poetry is written only for the nobility and readers that
belong on the higher class.

8. How does the critical faculty rank in relation to the creative or


inventive faculty?
o Creative faculty occupies a higher level in the hierarchy
compared to the critical faculty. This is according to Matthew
Arnold’s Literary Criticism.

9. Arnold said that English poetry of the first quarter of the


nineteenth century, with plenty of creative force, did not know
enough. What demonstrations of this opinion did he give in his
essay?
o Without poetry, our science will appear incomplete; and most
of what now passes with us for religion and philosophy will
be replaced by poetry” this was according to Arnold. He said,
“high truth” and “high seriousness” is what should be
considered the most important criteria in judging the value
of the poem.
