Guide Questions:
1. What type of collision happened if the calculated coefficient of restitution between two
colliding objects is zero? If one? If between one and zero?
- e is generally a positive, real number between 0 and 1: e = 0: This is a collision that is
completely inelastic. This implies that the kinetic energy along the common normal is
zero.
2. Can you give a scenario where the coefficient of restitution is equal to zero? - Two
colliding objects stick together a er a collision.
Activity No. 4: Problem Solving
What to do: Solve the following problems. Show your solutions and box your final answers.
Write them on a separate sheet of paper.
= 16 kg • m/s
= 121.05 kg • m/s
= 10 N
t = 2.5 s
= ∆t
= (10 N) (2.5 s)
= 25 N • s
m = 1200 kg∆
3) ∆ ∆t=
(1200 𝑘𝑔) (2.0 𝑚/𝑠)
(550.0 𝑁)
t=4.36sor4.4s
∴ 4.4 s is the time the tow truck needs in pulling a stalled car
5. A 2.0-kg ball moving with a speed of 5.0 m/s collides head-on with a 3.0 kg ball at rest. Perfectly
inelastic collision occurs in the process. What is the speed of the masses a er the collision? What
is the coefficient of restitution of the system?
- mA A + mBB = mAA + mB B
mA A = (mA + mB)AB
AB =
AB
ABAB === 2.0 m/s(10(22.05.𝑘𝑔0.𝑘𝑔0𝑘𝑔 •𝑘𝑔)𝑚) ( (5/3𝑠.0.0𝑚𝑘𝑔/𝑠))
REFLECTION
● World Health Organization’s study shows that 1.3 million people are cut short as a result of a road
traffic crash. Injuries caused by these car accidents can cause considerable economic losses to
individuals and their families. There might be several causes of car accidents to happen but the
injury it caused to a passenger can be minimized if a vehicle has a functional airbags system and
used seat belts. Using the concept of impulse and momentum, why do airbags and seatbelts in
cars reduce the chances of injury in accidents?
- Automobiles have air bags because they can reduce the force that a person feels after an
accident. The time it takes for the driver and passenger to come to a complete stop is
lengthened by air bags. With a constant change in momentum, the force on the body
decreases as it increases. In the event of an accident, seat belts safeguard you from rolling
around inside the vehicle. In the case of a collision, they are designed to extend
somewhat. The time it takes for the body's momentum to return to zero is lengthened,
lessening the forces acting on it.
