RECORD : 02
TEST METHOD : IDENTIFICATION OF RUST GRADE
STANDARD : ISO 8501-1
PURPOSE
The initial identification of rust grade will determine the amount of surface contaminants
such rust and mill scale that can induce premature coating failure. Also, this initial
identification serves as very important guide when comparing degree of surface
cleanliness with the standard photographic after abrasive blast cleaning. Thus,
thoroughly examine the steel surface before initiating any surface preparation will help
to establish its conditions to define the things that need to be addressed in the surface
preparation protocol.
APPARATUS
ISO 8501-1:1988 STANDARD PHOTOGRAPHIC
PROCEDURE
1. Select the photograph of the rust grade (A, B, C, or D) that most closely represents
the appearance of the steel surface to be cleaned.
A: Steel surface is covered completely with adherent mill scale and little, if
any, rust.
B: Steel surface has begun to rust and the mill scale has begun to flake.
C: Steel surface has the mill scale either rusted away or removable by
scraping; little pitting is visible to the naked eye.
D: Steel surface has the mill scale rusted away and has considerable pitting
visible to the naked eye.
2. Record this initial identification of rust grade
CONCLUSION
Test panel is complied to Norsok M501 Requirement.
RECORD : 03
TEST METHOD : IDENTIFICATION OF FABRICATION DEFECTS
STANDARD : ISO 8501-3
PURPOSE
Coatings tend to draw thin and pull away from sharp edges and projections, leaving little
or no coating to protect the underlying steel, thereby increasing the potential for coating
failure. Other features which are difficult to properly cover and protect include crevices,
weld porosity, skip weld and laminations. Thus, identifying surface defects would help to
determine the necessary actions needed to be taken prior to abrasive blasting.
APPARATUS
VISUAL EXAMINATION
PROCEDURE
1. Examine the surface defects prior to surface preparation. Identifying all the potential
factors such as sharp edge, corner, weld porosity, weld smoke, weld spatter, skip weld
and lamination that tends to create premature coating failure
2. Mark location of any surface imperfection and defects on the test panel as it will be
easily identified for further treatment or action.
CONCLUSION
Test panel needs further treatment for SSPC-SP1 Solvent Cleaning and SSPC-SP2/SP3
Hand-/Power-Tools Cleaning prior to abrasive blasting.
RECORD : 04
TEST METHOD : DEGREASING / SOLVENT CLEANING
STANDARD : SSPC-SP1
PURPOSE
Solvent cleaning is a method for removing all visible oil, grease, soil, drawing and cutting
compounds, and other soluble contaminants from steel surfaces. It shall be used prior to
the application of paint and in conjunction with surface preparation methods specified for
the removal of rust, mill scale, or paint.
APPARATUS
WIRE BRUSH AND SCRAPE
PROCEDURE
1. Remove heavy oil or grease first by scraper. Then remove the remaining oil or grease
by wiping or scrubbing the surface with rags or brushes wetted with solvent
2. Use clean solvent and clean rags or brushes for the final wiping.
CONCLUSION
Complied to Norsok M501 requirement
RECORD : 05
TEST METHOD : HAND- / POWER-TOOL CLEANING
STANDARD : SSPC-SP2 / SSPC-SP3
PURPOSE
Removes all loose mill scale, loose rust, loose paint, and other loose detrimental foreign
matter. It is not intended that adherent mill scale, rust, and paint be removed by this
process. Mill scale, rust, and paint are considered adherent if they cannot be removed by
lifting with a dull putty knife.
APPARATUS
WIRE BRUSH, POWER ABRADING, AND ROTARY TOOLS
PROCEDURE
1. Before power tool cleaning, remove visible oil, grease, soluble welding residue, and
salts by the methods outlined in SSPC-SP 1.
2. Remove stratified rust (rust scale), weld slag, weld spatter, loose mill scale, and loose
adherent contaminants
3. Any sharp edge, corner, protrusion, and irregularity surface of welding shall be ground
smooth to at least 2.0 mm.
4. Remove dirt, dust, or similar contaminants from the surface. Acceptable methods
include brushing, blow off with clean, dry air, or vacuum cleaning.
CONCLUSION

APPARATUS
DRY FILM THICKNESS GAUGE
(ELECTROMAGNETIC ELCOMETER 456)
PROCEDURE
1. All magnetic thickness gauges should be calibrated
before use. It is good practice to check the calibration
during and after use. Calibrate the gage according to
manufacturer’s instructions. Example of Gage Reading
2. Make five (5) separate spot measurements (average of the gage readings, see above
picture) spaced randomly over each 10 m2 area to be measured. The five spot
measurements shall be made for each 10 m2 of area as follows:
2.1 For structures not exceeding 30 m2 in area, each 10 m2 area shall be measured.
2.2 For structures not exceeding 100 m2 in area, three 10 m2 areas shall be
randomly selected and measured.
2.3 For structures exceeding 100 m2 in area, the first 100 m2 shall be measured as
stated in point 2.2 above and for each additional 100 m2 of area or increment
thereof, one 10 m2 area shall be randomly selected and measured.
3. Average of 5 spot measurements to be within specified range of DFT. No single spot
measurement shall be less than 80% of the specified min. DFT and more than 120% of
the specified max. DFT.
Other information:
Type of spray equipment used : Hasco 63:1
Tip size : 319
Input pressure to airless pump : 70 psi

TEST METHOD : HOLIDAY (DISCONTINUITY)
STANDARD : NACE RP0188
PURPOSE
Newly coated structures on which the coating integrity is important (particularly linings
or coatings in immersion conditions) should be tested with a holiday detector to ensure
coating film continuity. A holiday (sometimes called discontinuity) is a pinhole or other
break in the film that permits the passage of moisture to the substrate. This allows
substrate deterioration to begin. Holidays are not easily detected visually, and must be
located with electrical instruments called holiday detector.
APPARATUS
ELCOMETER 236 DC HOLIDAY DETECTOR
PROCEDURE
1. Place the probe on the test surface. Keep the probe in contact with the surface and
move it over the work area at a speed of approximately one meter every four seconds,
0.25 m/s (10"/s).
2. The presence of one or more of the following indicates that there is a flaw in the
coating:
• A spark between the probe and the surface
• ALARM flashes
• The audible alarm sounds
• The output voltage, indicated on the LCD display, drops substantially
• The probe neon indicator glows
3. The probe should always touch the surface. Gaps between the probe and the coating
can result in genuine flaws not being detected.

TEST METHOD : PULL-OFF ADHESION
STANDARD : ISO 4624 / ASTM D4541
PURPOSE
To measure the bond strength of applied coatings since adhesion is the key requirement
in a corrosion resistant coating. Irrespective of most of its other properties, the coating
with strong adhesion to the surface will retain its integrity much longer than the one with
less adhesion with other strong characteristics.
APPARATUS
ELCOMETER 106 ADHESION TESTER
ARALDITE GLUE PER STANDARD SPECIFICATION
PROCEDURE
1. The surface of the dolly and the test area should be abraded and be free from oil,
moisture and dust to ensure a good bond between the dolly face and the coating.
2. Prepare the surface of the dolly and the coating where the dolly is to be applied by
roughening with an abrasive paper. Then de-grease these areas by using a suitable
solvent to clean both surfaces.
3. Mix a small quantity of adhesive and apply an even film to the prepared surface of the
dolly. Place the dolly onto the prepared test surface and apply pressure to squeeze out
excess adhesive which should then be removed. Allow the adhesive to cure for the
recommended time
4. After adhesive cures for a certain agreed period, cut around the base of the dolly very
carefully using the dolly cutter. This is only necessary when lateral bonding in the
coating is greater than adhesion, for example, elastomeric coatings.
5. Place the base support ring over the dolly ensuring that it lies flat on the surface.
Slacken the handwheel or nut on the Adhesion Tester. Set the dragging indicator to zero
(0) on the scale and engage the claw carefully with the dolly.
6. Hold the Adhesion Tester steady with one hand to prevent rotation and tighten the
handwheel or nut slowly and evenly to apply an increasing force to the dolly and hence
to the coating.
7. Continue until the coating fails and the dolly is removed from the surface, or until the
specified test force is indicated. The pull-off force is read from the position of the
dragging indicator after the test is complete.
8. Immediately after the test is complete and the pull-off force has been recorded,
slacken the handwheel or nut to remove all the force from the unit.
9. To record the result, first inspect the face of the dolly. In most cases the coating will
fully adhere to the dolly and the test can be claimed as 100% valid. In some cases, the
coating will cover only part of the area of the dolly and a partial adhesion failure should
be recorded.
10. If no coating is present on the dolly this must be recorded as a failure of the
adhesive (or glue). This is normally due to incorrect or insufficient mixing of the
component parts of the adhesive, or incompatibility of the adhesive and the coating.
11. Observing the test area will give additional information about the type of failure;
adhesion and cohesion between different layers of the coating.
