TABLE OF CONTENTS
Chronic pain affects nearly 100 million people in the United States,
more than diabetes, coronary heart disease, stroke, and cancer
patients combined, according to the Institute of Medicine study
Relieving Pain in America. Pain is one of the few signs that all
specialties share. One of the most common reasons people seek
medical help is because they are in pain. Pain is mostly untreated. Lack
of formal clinical education in pain, lack of information about care and
management, not believing a patient is in pain, not knowing the
physiological and pathophysiological causes of pain, and
attitudinal/cultural problems, such as not appreciating the range of
responses to pain, are all factors that contribute to undertreatment of
pain.
