Definition of History
History is the study of the past events particularly in human affairs. History is an
umbrella term comprising past events as well as the memory, discovery, collection,
organization, presentation, and interpretation of these events. Historians seek knowledge
of the past using historical sources such as written documents, oral accounts, art and
material artifacts, and ecological markers.

Significance of History
Through history, we can learn how past societies, systems, ideologies, governments,
cultures and technologies were built, how they operated, and how they have changed. The
rich history of the world helps us to paint a detailed picture of where we stand today.

Classification of Sources in History and its destincions

There are two main types of historical sources: primary sources and secondary sources.
A primary source is something that originates from the past. It can be a chronicle, a piece
of pottery, or even a piece of glacial ice that gives us climate data about the levels of
atmospheric carbon one thousand years ago. Historians, to the best of their abilities, work
with primary sources to understand the past on its own terms, not through the modern-
day lenses.
A secondary source is a work that comments on the past. Typically this is a recently
written book that describes past events, often written by a historian or trained scholar
familiar about the time period and civilization in question. A secondary source is a book
about history. Scholars will spend just as much time with secondary sources as they will
with primary sources since they attempt to understand how other scholars interpret
obscure events and may disagree with their analyses.

Problems in the Study of History

The major challenges to historical research revolve around the problems of sources,
knowledge, explanation, objectivity, choice of subject, and the peculiar problems of
contemporary history. Sources The problem of sources is a serious challenge to the
historian in the task of reconstructing the past.
