Problem 1A.4
Gas-mixture viscosities at low density. The following data2 are available for the viscosities
of mixtures of hydrogen and Freon-12 (dichlorodifluoromethane) at 25°C and 1 atm:
Use the viscosities of the pure components to calculate the viscosities at the three intermediate
compositions by means of Eqs. 1.4-15 and 16.
Solution1
Eqs. 1.4-15 and 16 in the text are a pair of formulas that allow us to compute the viscosity of a
mixture with N chemical species.
N
X x α µα
µmix = N
, (1.4-15)
α=1
X
xβ Φαβ
β=1
where Φαβ is
−1/2 " 1/2 1/4 #2
1 Mα µα Mβ
Φαβ =√ 1+ 1+ . (1.4-16)
8 Mβ µβ Mα
The gas mixture has two chemical species, dichlorodifluoromethane (CCl2 F2 ) and hydrogen (H2 ).

BSL Transport Phenomena 2e Revised: Chapter 1 - Problem 1A.4 Page 2 of 2
µmix has to be calculated for three situations: (1) when x1 = 0.75 and x2 = 0.25,
(0.75)µ1 (0.25)µ2
µmix = + ≈ 127.2 × 10−6 poise
(0.75)Φ11 + (0.25)Φ12 (0.75)Φ21 + (0.25)Φ22
(0.50)µ1 (0.50)µ2
µmix = + ≈ 131.5 × 10−6 poise
(0.50)Φ11 + (0.50)Φ12 (0.50)Φ21 + (0.50)Φ22
(0.25)µ1 (0.75)µ2
µmix = + ≈ 135.4 × 10−6 poise
(0.25)Φ11 + (0.75)Φ12 (0.25)Φ21 + (0.75)Φ22
Therefore,
Mole fraction of CCl2 F2 (x1 ): 0.75 0.50 0.25
Mole fraction of H2 (x2 ): 0.25 0.50 0.75
.
µmix × 106 (poise): 127.2 131.5 135.4
µ × 106 (poise): 128.1 131.9 135.1
These numbers are in excellent agreement with the data.
