Q1. The stress components at a point in a plate are σxx = -120MPa, σyy = σzz = 60MPa,
τxy = τyz =10 MPa, and τxz = -100MPa.
1. Determine the principal stresses
2. Determine the direction cosines of the plane of maximum principal stress
3. Find the octahedral shear stress
4. Find the value of the maximum shear stress and compare it to the octahedral shear
stress.

Q3. An external pressure of 10 MN/m2 is applied to a thick cylinder of internal diameter 180 mm
and external diameter 340 mm. If the maximum hoop stress permitted on the inside wall of
the cylinder is limited to 40 MN/m2 , what maximum internal pressure can be applied
assuming the cylinder has closed ends? What will be the change in outside diameter when
this pressure is applied? E = 207 GN/m2 , v = 0.29.
Q4. Write and explain the conditions of compatibility for strain and derive the following
equation
