QUESTION 1 [20 MARKS]

Given that the sinusoidal current source in Figure 1 is is(t) = 12.728sin(2t +135°) A
(a) Using Nodal Analysis, calculate the voltage va(t) and the current ia(t). [16 marks]
(b) By using a phasor diagram, determine if va (t) is leading or lagging ia(t) and find their angle
difference, if any. [4 marks]

QUESTION 2 [20 MARKS]

Referring to Figure 2, if vs(t) = 56.569cos(10t + 30º) V and is(t) = 11.314sin(10t + 90º) A,

Using Mesh Analysis:

(a) Determine the current ix(t) and voltage vx(t). [16 marks]
(b) By using a phasor diagram, determine if vx(t) is leading or lagging ix(t) and find their angle
difference, if any. [4 marks]

(i) Obtain the real, reactive and complex powers consumed by ZQ. [10 marks]
(ii) Find the power factor of ZQ, its type and give reason for your answer. [2 marks]

(b) Your company, Glory Manufacturing Sdn. Bhd. would like to set up a factory at an
industrial area called Kawasan Industri Bistari. However, in order to do that, your company
must ensure that the power consumption of the factory you want to build does not exceed
the power supplied by the TNB substation for this industrial area. Currently, Kawasan
Industri Bistari already has a clothing manufacturing factory consuming 3k VAR at 0.7685
pf leading, and an electronics assembly factory taking up 4.75k W at 0.3841 lagging pf. If
the TNB substation can only supply 10.25k VAR with pf 0.8660 lagging to Kawasan
Industri Bistari, calculate the real, reactive and complex powers that your factory can use
to join this industrial area. You must also provide the power factor and its type that your
factory must have. [8 marks]
