THIRD GRADING PERIOD LONG TEST 2 REVIEWER

FILM
● A film is a series of photographic shots taken on a plastic strip and projected on a white
screen.
- The projection of the photographic shots creates an illusion of movement.
- This is the first form of movie that has paved the way for the modern motion
pictures of today’s time.
● Film is also known in contemporary times as movie or motion picture.
- Although the projected photographic shots are still being used today, digital
technology is now used in the making of motion pictures.
- Instead of photographic shots, motion pictures make use of digital cameras to
record videos or clips.
- These recorded clips are compiled to make a full length movie.
- Aside from physical settings and tangible props, films in the 21st century also
make use of different video editors and animations.
● Filmmaking is a very complex process.
- It requires contributions from different art expressions and technical skills. Some
of the different art expressions and technical skills involved in filmmaking are as
follows:
● Directing
● Scriptwriting
● Acting
● Cinematography
➔ Framing - carefully selecting what will be included within each
frame of the film and what will be excluded
➔ Scale - the size and placement of a particular object or a part of a
scene in relation to the rest, a relationship that is determined by
the placement of the camera.
➔ Shooting angle
➔ Camera movement - or the lack of it, during shooting
➔ Color and black and white - photography can be exploited
➔ Role of cinematographer

● Production/set design
● Movies are motion pictures in the contemporary times and are considered not only as a
form of entertainment, but also a medium of expression for different social issues.
- Just like any other art form, the plastic strips of photographic shots have evolved
with technology.
- Films can now create a more dynamic and remarkable form of entertainment and
expression for humankind.
- Here are some of the factors that make movies enjoyable to watch regardless of
age:
1. Movies present any kind of story - romance, comedy, historical, horror,
mystery, action, animation, and drama.
2. Movies appeal to our emotions; they can make us feel sad, happy,
scared, challenged or angry.
3. Movies create or bring to life different remarkable characters (fictional or
non-fictional).
4. Movies provide an escape from reality. They can bring us to different
settings and they can also make us meet different characters. Movies
also provide different vicarious experiences.
5. Movies quench our thirst for technology. With the help of technology,
movies give us new visual experiences that were beyond imagination in
the past.
● Movie Industry in the Philippines
- It is no doubt that Filipinos are movie lovers. They love to watch any genre. From
romance, comedy, action, horror, to historical movies. The movie industry in the
Philippines is relatively young, having started during the last decade of 19th
century.
- The Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) is an annual film festival in the
Philippines which runs from December 25 up to the first week of January.
➔ MMFF aims to celebrate Filipino artistic excellence, promote audience
development, and sustain the Philippine movie industry.
➔ During the duration of the festival, only local films approved by MMFF are
shown in movie theaters nationwide.
➔ The movies presented in this festival are judged according to a certain
criteria. MMFF also gives awards and recognitions for the different movies
in the festival in the country and they are as follows:
1. Cinemalaya Film Festival
2. Cinema One Originals
3. CineFilipino Film Festival
4. TOFARM Film Festival
● The success of a movie not only depends not only upon its plot and actors involved, but
also upon its director as well. The boom of the Philippine movies is strongly related to
the advent of world-class Filipino directors.
- Brillante Mendoza
➔ He is a multi-awarded film director from San Fernando, Pampanga.
➔ He took up advertising arts in UST.
➔ He is the first Filipino director who has competed and won in 3
International film festivals.
➔ He started as a production designer in different TV shows.
➔ His career as a director started in 2005 when he founded his own film
production named ‘Center Stage Productions’ (CSP).
➔ His first movie entitled ‘Masahista’ won the Golden Leopard award in the
2005 Locarno International Film Festival in Switzerland. Since then, he
has earned different local and international awards.
➔ He nevers to showcase Philippine culture in his films. He does not only
focus on poverty in the country and also positive traits of Philippine
culture such resilience and perseverance.
➔ Mendoza is known to feature big names and independent
actors/actresses in his films.
- Maryo J. delos Reyes
➔ One of the most accomplished directors of Philippine movies and
television.
➔ His debut film was ‘High School Circa ‘65’ in 1979 and it won different
awards and recognitions.
- Laurice Guillen
➔ She is an actress, a director, and a college professor.
➔ She started in the film industry as an actress. One of her first roles was a
seductress in the movie entitled ‘Tinimbang Ka ngunit Kulang’. She also
played as Corazon Aquino in the movie ‘A Dangerous Life’. She was also
part of the cast of ‘Flor De Luna’ in 1980.
➔ She was mentored by Lino Brocka. The first movie she directed was
entitled ‘Kasal’ starring Hilda Coronel and Christopher de Leon.

Animation
● Animation refers to the use of drawings arranged in a progressive or sequential order to
create an illusion of movement.
- It started in the caves of the first civilization during the Paleolithic Period when
the early men tried to record an event. Since then, techniques of animation have
evolved through the years and can now be done with the use of technology.
● Flip book is a book containing a series of pictures that are arranged in a sequential
order.
- When the pages of a flip book are turned rapidly, an illusion of motion is
produced.
- Flip books can be used as part of story books or magazines
● Stop motion is an animation technique that physically manipulates an object or makes
progressive changes in the drawing so that the object appears to move on its own. Every
change in position has been photographed.
● Computer-generated images (CGI)
- CGI is the most innovative technique of animation.
- It makes use of recorded images to make enhanced and realistic images that can
be incorporated in live footage of a film, TC show, or commercial.

● Animation in the Philippines


- The first Filipino-made cartoon was ‘Panday’. It was created by Gerry Garcia in
1980 based on the comic book with the same title. Garcia also produced
‘Adarna’, the first full length animation movie in the Philippines
- ‘Urduja’ is the second full-length animated feature film of Gerry Garcia that was
released in 2008. The movie was based on the famous legend of Princess
Urduja. Gerry Garcia is considered the pioneer of Philippine animation.
● Animation Council of the Philippines (ACPI)
- ACPI is a nonprofit organization that aims to promote the animation industry in
the country. It also intends to create a unique Filipino identity in the animation
industry in the world.
- ACPI is supported by the government and other well-known organizations such
as Cultural Center of the Philippines, Film Development Council of the
Philippines, and Philippine Software Industry Association.
- ACPI conducts animation classes, training, and seminars to train local talents.
The organizations also organize animation congresses and exhibits.
● Philippine Animation Studio, Inc. (PASI)
- PASI is an animation production that started in 1991. It aims to promote and
develop Filipino animators.
- PASI is the pioneer of traditional Philippine animation.
- PASI is now using advanced animation programs such as Flash and Toonboon
harmony.
- PASI is a recipient of numerous awards and recognitions. It offers services such
as props and costume design, storyboard making, and animation.
● Different types of films
- Dramas
➔ These films are serious and plot driven (storyline motivated) with realistic
characters and lots of character development as well as character
interaction.
- Action films
➔ These films usually have high energy, stunts and quite a few fights
- Rom-coms
➔ These films contain both romantic and very amusing elements
- Real life films
➔ These films are based on a life event that happened with characters that
really existed. Portrayal is supposed to be accurate but that isn’t always
the case.
- War films
➔ The plot of these films is mainly based around a conflict between two
countries or two groups and is usually set in land, in the air, or at sea.
- Scientific fiction
➔ Often set in another world or on another planet, these films are full of
imagination.
- Horror films
➔ These films confront our hidden fears
- Adventure films
➔ These films are exciting and often follow a search or an expedition to find
something
- Musicals
➔ Not all people like these films in which words are often sung rather than
spoken
- Comedy
➔ These films have you in stitches with tears rolling down your cheeks
- Romantic films
➔ The story in these films is heartwarming and often preferred by women
- Historical films
➔ Often set in the past in a well-known time and usually depicts a famous
historical character or event

Print Media and Digital Media


● Print Media
- This refers to the printing and distribution of information through physical means
such as newspapers, magazines, publications, newsletters, pamphlets,
brochures, and flyers.
- Print media is an effective tool in distributing information, news, advisories, and
commercial product information.
● Philippine Advertisement
- Advertisements that are printed are called print media advertising. The size of
printed ads varies.
- Printed advertisements in the Philippines started in the local newspapers and it
was followed by box announcements.
- Aside from billboards, other forms of modern print ads are letters or brochures via
postal service, direct mail, and flyers handed out or inserted into vehicles.
- Each of the following factors plays an important role in the prevalence of printed
ads in the Philippines:
1. The boom of shopping malls and other commercial places
2. The horrendous traffic in the country forces a lot of commuters to stay on
the road longer than intended.
3. Filipinos are brand-conscious; they want to know more about the product,
and the one-minute commercials in TV and radio are not enough to know
more about the product.
● Philippine Comic Book
- The comic book contains a series of comic strips that tell a story. Illustrated
images are often accompanied with dialogues and narrations. Dialogues are
placed inside speech balloons. Comic strips are printed in newspapers and
magazines.
- The comics or komiks occupy a special part in the entertainment culture of the
Philippines.
- The first comic strip in the Philippines was created by Dr. Jose Rizal and it was
entitled “Ang Matsing at ang Pagong”
- When the Spaniards were replaced by the Americans, Philippine comics also
embraced American influences.
- Tony Velasquez published “Ang Kabalbahan ni Kenkoy” (The Misadventures of
Kenkoy). This was strongly influenced by American culture.
- Kenkoy became a pop icon; he represented the common Filipino who was trying
to be an American. The term “Kenkoy” also became a part of our language-- it
means someone who is funny.
- Tony Velasquez is the founding father of Philippine comics.

➔ The most notable comic character in the Philippines
➔ She was a simple girl who by chance got hold of a magic stone that when
swallowed brought superpowers. Her original name is Narda.
➔ She was adapted in different genres such as movies, TV shows, and
commercials.
● Philippine Digital Media
- Digital media store data digitally.
- They can be created, viewed, distributed, modified, and preserved on different
digital electronic devices such as the computer, laptop, or smartphone.
- They are considered the opposite of print media.
- Digital media have caused a decrease in the use and sales of print media.
- They have caused a disruption in different fields such as education, commerce,
and politics.
- Digital media includes websites, mobile phone applications, social media, online
games, e-books, interactive storytelling, videos, data visualization, and
location-based services.
- Approx. 50% of the population in the country use the internet. They also spend
time on the internet on an average of 8 hours a day.
● Webpage Design
- It refers to the production and the maintenance of websites. It is primarily
concerned with the page layout, content production, graphic design, and other
interactive features of the website.
- Webpage design also requires contributions from different technical skills.
- Webpage design in the Philippines is handled by web developers made up of
different artists and professionals.
- Some of the web developers in the country are 7th media, Starfi.sh,
microSourcing, Arcanys, and FYDesigns
● Game Development
- Game development is the process of creating video games.
- The process can be done by a single game developer or by a team consisting of
artists with different technical skills.
- Game development does not only focus on programming but also includes visual
arts and story writing.
- Ever since Atari and Nintendo Family computer made their way to the country,
the game development industry in the Philippines has slowly been rising.
- Game Developers Association of the Philippines (GDAP) is a local trade
association that is focused on developing the game industry in the Philippines.
➔ Founded in 2007, GDAP aims to make the game development industry in
the Philippines vibrant, dynamic, and prosperous.
➔ The group conducts conferences and workshops, promotes trade
relations, and encourages the government to support the Philippine game
development industry.
- Derrick Alain M. Mapagu
➔ Developed the game called “Flippy Bottle Extreme”.
➔ The game attained the title “Number One in Google Play” in more than 10
countries.
➔ Derrick has founded his own company called “Most Played Games”
➔ He encourages thriving Filipino game developers to start their own
companies and research on the target clients they want to target

● Kenneth Cobonque
- He is a multi-awarded furniture designer and manufacturer from Cebu.
- He is known for having created a new face for modern furniture using
locally-sourced materials such as rattan, abaca, cane, and other natural fibers
and materials.
- The Kenneth Cobonque brand is known globally with an extensive roster of
clienteles ranging from celebrities to royalties.
- His designs have appeared on famous TV series and movies such as “CSI” and
“Ocean 11”

- She is a fashion designer and founder of The Natori Company based in New
York.
- Her brand specializes in embroidered lingerie, sleepwear, ready-to-wear apparel,
and accessories.
- Her first inspiration to venture in the fashion industry is a hand-embroidered
Filipino blouse. Since then, she has been able to mix traditional Filipino fashion
with Western contemporary style.
- She is known to mix Eastern and Western fashions

● Lulu Tan-Gan
- She is known as the “Queen of Knits” in the international fashion industry.
- The clothing line of Tan-Gan is 95% hand-loomed (knitted and woven) by the

Philippine colonial times and Western contemporary look.
- She has mastered combining native fabrics such as pina and silk into her
designs.

● Ditta Sandico-Ong
- She is a fashion designer dubbed as wrap artiste because of her creative wrap
collection.
- She is also known for her use of eco-friendly materials in her clothing line and her
advocacy for sustainable fashion.
- Her passion for indigenous fabrics has its start in her hometown; and her aim is
to help indigenous communities.
- She intends to create fashion that is smart, timeless, and stylish, using organic
materials.
- She continuously promotes the natural resources of the country and a

country.
● Rajo Laurel
- He is one of the top Filipino fashion designers.
- Along with his sister, they founded The House of Laurel
- He made an impression in the fashion industry after starting his career in 1993.
- He also became a TV personality
- The House of Laurel offers made-to-order couture and designer ready-to-wear.
- Laurel is known as one of the forerunners for introducing Philippine fashion
consciousness into the avante-grande of fashion scene.
- His clothing line is known for their oriental roots and global perspective.
● Aza Ong
- She is an artist, teacher, performer, and designer,
- She is known for her original artworks using crochet enriched by wood, metal,
semi-precious stones, and other fibers.
- Her designs are inspired by the culture of ‘Talaandigs’ an indigenous tribe in
Bukidnon. She adapted their unique artistry in her art after becoming a volunteer
teacher in the tribe.
- Ong’s products vary from humongous bags, squeaky bonnets, and shawls that
can transform wearers into a life-sized butterfly-- all made from crochet.
