1.Tick the correct option:

A) Kudzu has overgrown many parts of southern Missouri and native ground plants have
disappeared from the area. This is an example of:

a )Parasitism between kudzu and the native plants

b) A predator prey relationship between ground plants and kudzu
c) Competition occurring between the native and invasive species
d) Commensalism occurring between the kudzo and native plants

B) Which of these factors in a community is a biotic factor?

a) pH
b) Predation
c) Temperature
d) Salinity

C)All the interacting populations of different species within a location' is a definition for which
term?

a) Community
b) Population
c) Habitat
d) Ecosystem

D)Two students recorded the number of birds they saw in one hour in two gardens.

1|Page
The owners of garden A put out food on their bird table every day for five days. The owners of
garden B moved out a month ago. No food has been put out in garden B in the last month. On
day 5 they couldn't get into garden B so no results were recorded.

Day 1 Day 2 Day 3 Day 4 Day 5

Garden A 7 5 4 5 4

Garden B 1 2 1 2 No results

State the independent variable .Calculate the mean for both gardens. [2 marks]

Garden A = 7+5+4+5+4=25/5= 25

Garden B = 1+2+1+2=6/4=1.5

E)Two students are investigating the effect of temperature on the rate of decay of fresh milk by
measuring pH change. The following table shows their results at 25°C.

Time (hours) pH of milk

0 6.5

24 6.0

48 5.2

72 4.7

Question

From the data recorded, comment on the trend shown in the pH of milk.

Change of value = 6.5 – 4.7 = 1.8

Change in time = 72 hours

Rate of change = 1.8/72 = 0.025

Q2.
Use the food web to answer the questions below

2|Page
1. Write down a food chain containing 3 organisms.

2. Write down the longest food chain you can

3. Name 2 producers.

4. Name 3 carnivores.

5. Name 1 organism that is both a secondary consumer and a tertiary consumer.

Example: One acre of a grain crop could be used to feed cattle, and then the cattle ...
The organisms that eat the producers are the primary consumers

A disease kills all the shrews.

6. What 2 animals would decrease in numbers because their food source has been removed?
All the other animals in
and the food web would die too, because their food supplies would
havegone. The populations of the consumers would fall as the

7. Which of these 2 animals do you think would be most affected and why?
Next, you'll see six animal species that are affected by climate change today. 1)
3 | P aCheetahs. Two cheetahs
ge resting together in the wild. Cheetah population .
8. Which organism would increase in number?
With more food, the populations of rabbits and insects would increase. of fruit for us to eat, and
also the number of seeds for new crop plants to grow.

9. Are these the only 3 organisms to be affected? Explain your answer.

Organisms live within an ecological community, which is defined as an assemblage
of . Theseare not the only types of species interactions,

10.Using your longest food chain above, construct an energy pyramid.

Producers, or autotrophs, make their own organic
molecules. · A food chain is a linear sequence of
organisms through which nutrients and energy pass as
one

a. Which animal has the most amount of available energy?

____________________
b. Which animal has the least amount of available energy? ____________________
c. How is energy lost in the food chain?

11.a)Draw the energy pyramid and prove the energy law by the information given in the food
chain.
Fill in the organisms and energy amounts. The food chain is as follows:
Acorn → Squirrel → Crow → Coyote
1,000 kcal are available for the 1 st trophic level,
100 kcal for the 2 nd trophic level,
10 kcal for the 3 rd trophic level.
b)Justify how many kcal are available for the tertiary consumer? If a grassland ecosystem
has 10,000 kilocalories (kcal) of energy concentrated in vegetation, only about 1,000 kcal will be
transferred to primary consumers

4|Page
c)Explain why can an ecosystem be described as self supporting?

considered a self regulated and self sustaining and functional unit of nature
because it consists of a community of living beings and its physical environment

12.Comment on the type of relationship giving reasons for the same.
a) The Remora Fish feeds off the food scraps from the shark. The remora has a suction cup on the
top of its head to attach to the shark. It eats the excess food that the shark doesn’t eat and also
gets a free ride (using no energy of its own for movement).

Relation The remora removes parasites from the shark's skin and even inside the mouth,
which benefits the shark. Commensalism is when two species live together but one
benefits while the other is unharmed or helped. An example of this relationship is seen
with the humpback whale and the barnacle

b) The Plover cleans the teeth of the crocodile.

Comment how does the plover benefit? It gets the crocodile food
Comment how does the crocodile benefit? The crocodile gets his mouth clean

c) The polar bear is hunting an animal.

Relation- Polar bears interact with little other

animals, other than to prey upon them. The
main and most popular interaction the polar
bear experiences is that with seals

Q13. Define key stone species.. Are they

always the top predator?
Keystone species are often predators, but
not always apex predators. Instead, they
are usually secondary consumers.

Q14.Compare and contrast the feeding methods of the two organisms given below :
a. Fungi, such as the death cap, are not able to ingest their food like animals do, nor
can they manufacture their own food the way plants do. Instead, fungi feed by
absorption of nutrients from the environment around them

b. Earthworm feeds mainly on small particles of detritus. They remain in soil and are
known as the farmer’s friend .
