CHAPTER 1 THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Background of the study

Due to the pandemic a lot of students are hard to their study and the government
decided to have a online class but every students. Facing a hard time to study and
they use some online platforms for their study to help them to answer their activity to
research information and etc., through online. Online platforms is used to describe
the range of the services through internet including the following examples. Such as
marketplace, search engines, social media, creative content outlet, app store,
communication services, payment system, services comprising, that so called
“collaborative” or “gig” economy and so much more. It also defined as digital
services that facilitates interaction between two or more independent users who
internet through internet (OCCD, 2019) Students use social media from their study
and search engines to help from their study to find information. This is one of the
easy way to gather data through social media you can see an information as long as
you have a internet to access it.

Social Media is an category of online discover wherein people can create their
content, share it, bookmark it, and network at a prodigions rate (Asur and Huleman,
2010)

This study aims to know how Facebook app effectiveness in academic

performance of Senior High School students of Parada National High School.

Review Literature

According to Sandra Okyeadie Mensah(2016) The high level and improved

utilization of online media stages, for example, Facebook has gotten a overall marvel
for a long while. In spite of the fact that everything began has been a diversion for a
few in addition. Individual around the globe have been dependent on the web which
has offered ascend to more understudies utilizing social media more frequently than
previously. Nalwa and Anand (2003) exhorted and suggested that those who are

have been dependent on the web which has offered ascend to more understudies
utilizing social media more frequently than previously. Nalwa and Anand (2003)
exhorted and suggested that those who are dependent clients love to utilize the web to
interfere with their own and expert who are dependent clients love to utilize the web
to interfere with their own and expert duties in which the ultimate result is helpless
scholarly execution. Their own and expert duties in which the ultimate result is
helpless scholarly execution.

According to Jill Fjelstul (2006) stated that project delivered internet based
professional development and special education endourse to students as an alternative
certification program. Results indicated alternative certification program from
students scored higher competency ratings their Face to Face counter part.Dellema
Collins and West (2000)compared effectiveness of a virtual under graduate
management science classroom and its FtF counterpart components of the Dellema
et.al,(200)study were given in physical classroom setting to ensure academic integrity
a thread discussion provide collaboration on specified topics and email was an
optional source of communication between classmates. There were in differences in
academic performance between the two modalities.

According to Gilbert (2015) stated that online learning environments can be

categorized into three central groups, fully web based, blended or hybrid format, and
traditional courses using web based supplements. Therefore hybrid courses that they
called is consist of both web based and degree of time allotted to the online and in
class session, depending upon he nature of the class and discretion of the instructor.

According to Viet Ann Nguyen (2017) stated that active interaction in

online learning activities including the types of interaction the learner self- learner,
learner, learner self -learner, learner instructor, learner content and learner interface.
The results of their study showed that the students with better results and need less
time learning with the system, However the research conducted no interactive forms,
There is a positive influence in the direction of time spent online and there results
(Damianov,Kupczynski,& Calafiore 2009) calculated by the scores of students
especially students in

the group above average, there was no relationship between other forms of
interaction to the learning outcomes of the students.

2
PARADA NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT

According to Nicole (2007) stated that students and teenagers have specially
recognize the social media platforms as their tool for academic and also to be able to
contact their peers, share information, or even showcase their social media lives and
this results to a poor academic performance. ( international journal of Education
2016) the advanced of improved usage of social media platforms such as Facebook,
has become a worldwide phenomenon for a long period of time though it all started
been hobby for several computers literates individual has changed social media norm.

Furthermore, Digital inequality in schools based on the capacity of the

students to use technology for academic purposes has found to be associated to
teachers technological interventions while it has been proven in various studies that
teachers technological capability remains to be a major concern in a technology
enhanced classroom this concern has found to be effective.

According to Shah Alam (2017) stated that the use of social media
technologies widely used by students can have a positive impact on students and a
key factor for the students in achieving summative grades and left the course early
(Garcia et.al,2015) besides the result of Facebook adversely affecting their academic
performance (Ahsan Ul haq & sohail chand,2012) This is based on the behavior of
male students are more active and spend a lot of time on facebook makes them
unable to focus on their academics Moreover (Rouis, Limayem, & Sangari
2011)stated that many students use Facebook with an extroverted personality can
lead to poor academic achievement. It indicates that the personality of a person while
using Facebook play a role whether the academic performance can be achieved or
not.

According to Shambare, R et al. (2012) stated that Social networking habits

among students their study indicates that such Medias most commonly used by
Younger‟s and Facebook is most widely using by a large number of

communities and have multiple effects on student's life. The high speed and quickly
approach to internet and the development of smart phone technology are most
important drivers behind the adoption and connectivity with social networking
websites and conclude that SNS enhance their knowledge level.

3
PARADA NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT

Furthermore, teaching in online course involves in more than replicating

classroom strategies in a different form news stated that the growing availability of
an internet to a wider population plus the development of multimedia technologies
such as better platforms and cheaper gadgets, are the prime movers of e learning can
take place anywhere rather than a classroom it can help students to be more effective
in terms of cholastic skills, allowing them to be more flexible

According to Timothy Onasahwo(2018)stated In recent decades, research

evidence has shown that the advances in information technology and the
development of computers have affected student approaches to research and learning
in the contemporary higher educational settings. Studies have shown that technology
is one of the key modifiers of human behaviour (Gan and Li, 2018; Greitemeyer and
Oswald, 2011), and this has now become a norm for social interactions (McLeod,
2008). In this view, computer and internet technologies have been indicated to
influence human behaviour (Roudbaraki and Esfidvajani, 2011; Weimann, 2006),
and this, in turn, has positively affected students' research and academic learning.

According to Randy Mc Camey et.al,(2018) stated that In an article on Internet

use and academic performance (2001), Kubey et al. stated that, “69% of students, and
69% of teachers, said that they have personally seen students’ grades improve
through use of the Internet” (p.1). While this is a good example of how Internet can
benefit society, they discovered that excessive Internet use could be damaging to
students’ academic performance. Kubey et al. used a survey that dealt with
technology use among college students, the main focus being on Internet use,
television use, sleep, online shopping, and web browsing. Kubey et al. (2001) defined
Internet dependent as a person who spends roughly 11.18 hours per week on the
Internet, while an individual who is not dependent is said to spend roughly 3.84
hours on the Internet in a week. Based upon the results from 576 college students,
Kubey et al. found that 9% reported to being psychologically dependent on the
Internet. They also found that among students who were psychologically dependent
on the Internet “20% reported that they had occasionally, frequently, or very
frequently missed class because of their Internet use” (p. 374). Additionally, Kubey
et al. reported that 50% of students who experienced academic failure stated that
thejsms.org Page 135 the use of Internet played a large part in the reason they failed.

4
PARADA NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT

Kubey et al. (2001) discussed how individuals who were Internet dependent
displayed many of the same characteristics researchers associate with gambling
addiction. Kubey et al. states that if the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental
Disorders, Fourth Edition (DSM IV) criteria for gambling addictions was used and
the word “gambling” was substituted with “Internet,” individuals displaying Internet
dependency display many of the same characteristics used to diagnose the serious.
Psychological addiction of gambling. Internet Gaming Disorder, using items similar
to those proposed by Kubey et al. was added to the current DSM V manual (APA,
2013). Overall Kubey et al.,’s research provides a strong foundation for the study of
Internet dependence of college students and how it may affect their academic
performance.

Synthesis

This study is related to the work as cited by Bernard John Kolan (2018) their
study that according to “Mobile Social Networks and Social Practices” social
network applications have now been migrated from the computer to the 7 mobiles
phone, network information and communication can be integrated into the public
space; and these new services that are developed for mobile phones allow users to
create, develop, and strengthen their social ties. Positive effects of social media on
students’ academic life Students’ academic life has moved to a different dimension
since the introduction of these social media networks and several studies have
affirmed that social media plays an important role on students in higher education
including the study conducted by Wheeler, Yeomans and

Wheeler,(2008); Rifkin, Long necker, Leach and Ortia,(2009). In their study, they
recognized four (4) major advantages of social media usage by students in higher
education which included; enhancing relationship, improving learning motivation,
offering personalized course material, and developing collaborative abilities.

The difference of this study from other is we ask them if this different
online platforms has a good effect trough their academic performances specially for
students that involved so much to social media, and they can still manage and cope
up with their academic works and enhance their capability in being flexible to their
role as a college students.

5
PARADA NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT

The gap this study from others there are just random students that their
academic performances affect because of using this different online platforms were
used as a tool for learning, and did not cope up well the discussion of their teacher
because of it is not virtual like the usual.

Significance of the Study

This study can benefits the following beneficiaries. First, the school
principal by the help of this study it can give a principal as a guide to know if the
Face book app that the students used could help them. Second, the teacher it can also
benefit the teacher to know that the Facebook app help them from their discussion.
Third the parents to guide their children from these Facebook app that they are using
to their studies. Fourth the students the can also benefits to those have an idea to what
they can use from their studies and lastly the future researchers they can benefit from
it to use as their guidelines if they want to study also this kind of topic
