Workshop
EMDR and Eating Disorders

3 days of training
+
5 sessions of additional group consultation

Teachers:
Renée Beer & Ankie Roedelof
GENERAL INFORMATION
In the Netherlands several search strategies (paths) have been developed for selection of relevant targets when
there are varied forms of psychopathology.

A transdiagnostic perspective on eating disorders was introduced by Fairburn (2003) and resulted in a 'CBT-
E(nhanced)' program. This program has been tested empirically and proved to be more successful than many of the
mainstream therapies for eating disorders, both for adults and adolescents (Byrne et al, 2011; Dalle Grave et al,
2013; Fairburn et al, 2015; De Jong, 2021).

Based on Fairburn's transdiagnostic theoretical model and the paths for target selection, developed in the
Netherlands, an EMDR-ED (Eating Disorders) protocol was developed, covering 6 modules. Clinical practice has
demonstrated that with this protocol EMDR therapy can be applied within a multidisciplinary treatment, as
prescribed by (inter)national guidelines, and shows promising results.

In clinical practice, EMDR therapy seems effective for treating core symptoms of the disorder (such as fear of eating
and the urge to binge or to perform compensatory behaviors) as well as sustaining factors (such as the negative self-
image, negative body image/body perception).

The EMDR-ED protocol has not been tested empirically yet and our intention is to promote research projects, where
researchers are provided with data from therapists who can guarantee treatment fidelity. Ankie Roedelof and Renée
Beer support institutions that want to study the effectiveness of the protocol.

GOAL
The aim of the workshop is to prepare therapists for adequate application of this protocol to their patients.

DESCRIPTION
In this three-days’ workshop you learn how to apply the EMDR-ED protocol.
During the first day (= 2 half-days online) you are introduced to the different paths for target selection, and you are
taught how to work with them.
During the next two days (= 4 online sessions) you will learn how to use these paths within the 6 modules of the
EMDR-ED protocol.
After these three days you will receive five online consultation sessions of 90 minutes in groups.

REQUIREMENTS
