Office Hours: __________________________________________

Each laboratory section will meet once a week for 2 hours and 50 minutes in Yates 211. The required
text for this class is Principles of Plant Biology: A Laboratory Manual for BZ120, 3rd Ed. The lab
manual is available at the CSU Bookstore. You will need to obtain a copy of the lab manual and bring it
with you to lab each week. It is important that you read the lab exercises to be performed each week
prior to coming to lab.
Procedures & Policies
You are expected to attend and participate fully in the entirety of the lab exercises every week. You are
required at each class to show your lab instructor that you completed the lab assignments in your lab
notebook before leaving the classroom. There are NO make-up labs or quizzes.
Keep all work areas and equipment you use in the lab clean. You are responsible for your lab station
and its equipment. Points will be deducted from your overall lab grade if your lab bench has not been
cleaned up (including wiping down the bench top with Simple Green). Report any injuries or broken
equipment to your instructor immediately. No food or drinks are allowed in the lab.
Evaluation and Grading
Your grade on the lab portion of this course will be based on the total number of points that you
accumulate during the semester, out of 200 available points. You will be graded on seven quizzes (25 pts
each), one lab report (30 pts) and lab participation (20 points). Lab participation points will be based on
participation and completion of filling out your lab manual each week. Points will be given as follows:
13-14 completed labs-20 points; 11-12 completed labs-15 points; and <11 labs-0 points. Your lowest
quiz grade will be dropped, but there will be no make-up quizzes. The breakdown of points is as follows:
Quizzes (highest 6 of 7) *(25 pts) 150 pts
Lab Report 30 pts
Lab Participation 20 pts
TOTAL: 200 pts
Your instructor will give you information regarding the lab report. Quizzes will include some practical
questions using slides or other materials used in lab. One or more quiz questions will cover material for
that day’s lab, so please read the lab topic for that day before coming to lab.
Your lab grade (out of 200 pts) will be added to your grade in lecture (out of 400 pts) for your final
BZ120 grade. You must pass the laboratory to pass the course. If you do not get a passing grade of
60% in lab, you will fail BZ120.
Academic dishonesty of any kind will not be tolerated and must be reported to student judicial affairs. We
adhere to the CSU policies on academic integrity and classroom behavior, which can be found in the CSU
General Catalog for 2017-2018 at: http://catalog.colostate.edu/general-catalog/policies/students-
responsibilities/#academic-integrity.
You will have an opportunity to write and sign an honor pledge on all quizzes and lab report submissions. This is
recommended, not required, in order to promote academic integrity.
How to be Successful in Lab
1. Come to lab and bring your lab manual.
2. Read the lab exercise and try to define the terms in the lab notebook before you come to lab.
3. Go to class. You will need to know the lecture material to do well in lab.
4. Participate in every exercise and answer the questions in your lab manual. Take notes as needed.
