Lesson Plan in Science 7

SUSTAINABLE WAYS OF USING EARTH’S RESOURCES

I. CONTENT STANDARD: The learners demonstrate an understanding of the relation of

geographical location of the Philippines to its environment.

Learning Competency: Cite and explain ways of using earth’s resources sustainably.
(S7ES-IVa-1)

TLE 7 LO 2.2 Undertake nursery work in a safe, appropriate, and

environmentally-sound manner according to nursery guidelines.
(FSTLE_NW- lVa-d-6)

Enhanced MELC Cite and explain ways of using earth’s resources

sustainably in undertaking nursery works in a safe,
appropriate, and environmentally- sound manner
according to nursery guidelines. (S7ES-IVa-1; LO2.2)
Objectives: At the end of the one-hour session, the students should be able to:
1. Describe Earth’s natural resources;
2. Differentiate renewable from nonrenewable resources;
3. Explain why Philippines is rich in natural resources;
4. Determine which human practices in using natural resources are sustainable
and not sustainable; and
5. Suggest ways on how to use the natural resources sustainably.

II. SUBJECT MATTER: Sustainable Ways of Using Earth’s Resources

SCIENCE IDEAS AND CONCEPTS:

 Earth’s Natural Resources are substances that are supplied by nature and needed for
survival. They include air, water, soil, mineral, plants, and animals.
 Conservation is the practice of caring for the natural resources so all living things can
benefit from them.
 Sustainability is conserving natural resources which can make them last and be
available for future generations.

III. LEARNING TASKS

A. ELICIT: (5mins)
1. Review students’ prior knowledge through a YES or NO Game. Each group will have a green
(Yes) and red (No) flag. The group with the highest score will be declared the winner.
a. Renewable resources are materials which can be restored or replaced through natural
processes.
b. Non-renewable resources are materials that cannot be readily replaced by natural means.
c. Being in the Pacific Ring of Fire contributes to the abundance of mineral resources
in our country.
d. Biological actions slow down weathering.
e. Energy resources are non-renewable resources.

B. ENGAGE: (10mins.)

Interactive Storytelling:
In this activity, the students participate in an interactive story (The
teacher will prepare a big transparent jar filled with clear water. Then,
sample waste materials will be given to the students. They will
participate in the activity by adding the different materials mentioned as
the story unfolds.

WHO POLLUTED THE FARMLANDS AND RIVER?

A long time ago, only few areas of our land is inhabited. Few people
live here, and they depended on nature for their daily needs. They looked for food in the forest,
swamps, and rivers. And they lived a simple and abundant life.

Eventually, more people came to live in this place. So, a lot of changes started to happen.
As more people move in, a populated area grew near the river. Then, during rainy days LOOSE
SOIL from construction areas were carried by the running water towards the river. Upstream, in
the farmlands, farmers planted crops using CHEMICAL FERTILIZERS to make their crops grow
faster to have better yield as the demand of the population increases.

A city gas grown near the river. Factories were built to start different industries but these
infrastructures leak PAINTS, OILS AND CHEMICALS into the surrounding land areas and the
rivers. These pollutants cause the fish to become sick and contaminates the water in the river.

As time goes by, illegal settlers stated building their houses near the river. Then some of
them were dumping their GARBAGES into the river which resulted to polluted waters. The
farmland is no longer green, and the river has changed a lot over the years.

Guide questions:
1. Who polluted the river?
2. How could we clean up the water in the jar? (Solids can be strained out, or filters like
cotton can be helpful in removing the solids)
3. Is it easier to prevent pollution, or to clean it up later?
4.Think about the pollution each of you have contributed. What could you do to keep the
river clean? (Varied answers)

C. EXPLORE: (15 mins)

1. The learners will be grouped into 5. They will explore the farm school nursery and find
at least five examples of natural resources.
2. They will identify whether they are renewable or non-renewable resources and will
explain ways to sustain them.
3. The learners’ outputs will be presented after the activity.

D. EXPLAIN (20min.)
1. The answers presented by each group will be discussed.
2. The students will be asked of the following questions:
a. Based on the activity, why do we need to conserve earth’s resources?
b. What are the different ways in conserving earth’s resources?
3. The teacher will discuss of the different ways of conserving earth’s resources for
sustainability.
Planet Earth is composed of different things like air, water, plants, animals, soil, rocks, minerals, crude
oil, and other fossil fuels. They are found in nature and are called natural resources.
The Philippines is considered rich in natural resources. Its fertile land, high diversity of plants and
animals, extensive coastlines, and rich minerals deposits make it suitable to inhabit. But not all resources are in
endless supply for some of it took millions of years to develop before man can accumulate them. There is a
great need to conserve these natural resources.

To conserve natural resources, you need to protect or use them wisely without wasting or using them up
completely. You can also advise to use renewable resources, like wind and solar energy, instead of non-
renewable resource. Using these resources should not cause harm to the environment. It should be conserved in
a way that it will last and still be available for future generations. This is what sustainability of natural resources
mean. Each one should think about how to make things sustainable. Remember, the lives of future generation
depend on how you use the natural resources today.
