through the help of a well-known personality
on television. Who among you know about the
Pinoy Big Brother? (The students will raise their
hands.)

Kuya will be joining our discussion here.

I will be his house guest and you are his
housemates. To have your surprise budget price
for today, you have to complete Kuya’s tasks.
Let us now hear from Big Brother. Kuya?
“Good morning, housemates!
Welcome to my house. Another
week has passed and it’s now time
for new challenges. You will face
your Daily Tasks. As for your first
task today, always remember, a
picture speaks a thousand words.
It’s not just what you see, but you
have to ask, how you see it.
Houseguest Mr. Biraquit, please go to
the confession room for the task.

Okay, class, for your first task today, we

shall have a game entitled “PICS CLUES”.
But before that, please bring out your phones and
scan the QR code that is placed on the armrest of
your chairs. Those who got the same word, stay
together. Class, proceed now
to your respective groups quietly. (The students proceed to their groups)
For your first task, we will be using the educational
application “Wordwall”. Please open the link that
I have sent in our class group chat. In this activity,
you have to arrange the letters as fast as you can
in order to guess our magic word that describes the
sets of pictures posted on the board. Discuss among
yourselves, and after knowing the magic word,
each one of you should arrange the jumbled
letters in wordwall. The accumulated scores
of all the members will be added and will be
the score of the group. Are the instructions clear,
class? Yes, sir.

Take note, you only have 10 minutes to do this task.

Your timer starts now.

of context clues used to suggest the meaning of
words and appreciate context clues through
performing differentiated activities.

B. ANALYSIS

ON DEFINING CONTEXT CLUES

Based on the activity that you have done earlier,

who can now define context clues?
Context clues are words or phrases
acting as clues to the meaning of an
unfamiliar word in a sentence.
Excellent!

ON GIVING THE MEANING OF WORDS THROUGH CONTEXT CLUES

Let’s increase your vocabulary and enhance your

comprehension skill in doing the next activity
entitled “DECODE ME.” Let us listen to Big Brother
For the instructions.
Housemates, listen carefully to the
instructions: Each group is required to
scrutinize the pictures, numbers, and
letters that I will be flashing. Your task is to
form a sentence by decoding the symbols,
pictures, numbers and letters which serve
as your clues. Slate boards where you can
write your answers will be provided. The
group who gets or raises first the correct
answer will get a point and the group who
gets the most number of points will be the
winner.

Class, are you ready for your second task?

Yes, sir.
What are the sentences that you have formed?
1. Samantha was exasperated.
2. She and her mother had been
quarrelling, or
fighting for several hours, and she wanted
to take a nap.
3. It seemed that there was always
something
to distract her, which made her forget what
she was supposed to be doing.
4. She picked up a variety of things such
as dirty socks, books, games and all kinds
of other stuff.
5. Her mother starred dumbfounded, totally
shocked that her daughter was suddenly
cleaning.
6. After several years, Kate finally found
time furlough (to lay off from work) herself
from her care giving work.
7. Upon arrival, she learned that poverty is
really a very predicament not simple,
social problem to solve.
8. She often falls into introspection such as
where she has gone wrong, what shall she
do to fix the problem or would it be right for
her to ask sorry from her husband.

Very good! Class, kuya has another message.

(The students will listen to Kuya’s

voice)
“Housemates, how are the tasks
so far? Always remember, it’s not
enough to just recognize, but it pays a
lot to use what you have learned so
you’d be prepared for real
world tasks. Housemate Class President, please go
to the confession room for task 3.

Thank you, Big Brother. As per Kuya, let’s have

another activity entitled “1 2 3 GO” to better hone
your vocabulary skill. Your task is to
identify the meaning of the underlined word by
choosing among the three choices. Again, we will be
using Word Wall. You will be working independently
but your scores will be added which will compose
your group’s total score. You have 5 minutes to
answer this task.

ON IDENTIFYING THE TYPE OF CONTEXT CLUES USED TO SUGGEST THE MEANING OF

WORDS

This time class, let us now identify the type of

context clues used to suggest the meaning of
words.

Samantha was exasperated. She and her mother had been quarrelling,
or fighting, for several hours, and she wanted to take a nap. For some reason,
Samantha was having a lot of trouble focusing on getting her room picked up.
She wasn’t really sure why, but it seemed that there was always something to
distract her, which made her forget what she was supposed to be doing. The
day was slipping by.
Samantha’s mother remarked, “if your room isn’t cleaned up by 5:00, I’m
afraid you can’t go to the fair with your friends.” Suddenly, Samantha realized
the consequence (result) of her dirty room. Right away, she immediately got to
work. She picked up a variety of things such as dirty socks, books, games, and
all kinds of other stuff. Her mother starred dumbfounded, totally shocked that
her daughter was suddenly cleaning. “Looks like you’ll be going to the fair after
all” she exclaimed.

After several years, Kate finally found time furlough (to lay off from
work) herself from her care giving work. She almost does not want to go to her
country because she has established camaraderie with her colleagues and
employers. However, she badly needs to leave and to fix intricate problems
within her family and other non-urgent matters at their home. Upon arrival, she
learned that poverty is really a very predicament not simple, social problem to
solve. She promised to help her family this time. She often falls into
introspection such as where she has gone wrong, what shall she do to fix the
problem or would it be right for her to ask sorry from her husband. She is place
in exigent same as how a lawyer is placed on a critical situation when he has to
defend a guilty client.

Look and focus on this sentence.

Her mother starred dumbfounded, totally

shocked that her daughter was suddenly cleaning.

In this sentence, what is the underlined word?

Dumbfounded, sir.
Are you familiar with this word class?
No, sir.
Is there any clue present to get the meaning of
the underlined word?
Yes, sir.
Do the clues suggest the meaning of the
underlined word?
Yes, sir.
Very good!

What else is given in the sentence to get the

meaning of the word?
The phrase totally shocked, sir.
Definitely!
So how do we call different words with the
same meaning?
Synonyms, sir.
Precisely!

In this sentence, what is your basis in finding

the clue or how is the synonym used to get the
meaning of the unfamiliar word?
With the use of comma, sir.

Very good!

Based now on your answers,

what do you think the type of context
clue being utilized in the sentence class?
Use of synonyms, sir.
Good!
One type of context clue is the use of
synonyms. We can also discover the meaning of an
unknown word using synonyms by looking for
comma, dash, parentheses, a link or series
of synonymous terms or restatement of the
difficult terms in more familiar words in
phrase, clause or another sentence.

I know that you are now ready to tackle

the next type. So, let’s proceed on the
next sentence.

Upon arrival, she learned that poverty is

really a very predicament not simple, social problem
to solve.

In this sentence, what is the word being

underlined?
Predicament, sir
Are you familiar in this word, class?
No, sir.
Is there any clue to get the meaning of
the unfamiliar word, class?
Yes, sir.
Excellent!

What do you think is the clue being used?

The word “not”, sir.
Very good!

Then what word helped you to get the

meaning of the underlined word?
The word simple, sir.
Do the words predicament and simple
opposite in meaning?
Yes, sir.
How do we call the words with different
meaning?
Antonym, sir.
Definitely!

How is the antonym used to get the meaning

of the unfamiliar word class?
Through the use of the word “not”, sir.
Correct. We can also get the meaning of
the unfamiliar words using antonyms by
looking at the words “but, however, although,
otherwise, unless, instead, on the contrary,
on the other hand, while and never.

So what do you think is the second type

of context clue used in the sentence class?
Use of antonym, sir.

Precisely, class!

Another type is the use of antonyms.

Now, let us also look at this sentence.

She picked up a variety of things such as

dirty socks, books, games, and all kinds of other
stuff.

What is the underlined word class?

Variety, sir.
Are you familiar with this word class?
No, sir.
Is there any clue being used to suggest
the meaning of unfamiliar word class?
Yes, sir.
What is it class?
Through the use of” such as”, sir.
We can also get the meaning of the
word through the use of the words
“such as” Ma’am.
What now is your clue in getting the meaning
of the unfamiliar word?
The phrases “such as dirty socks,
books, games, and all kinds of other
stuff”, sir.
Are these words examples of variety class?
Yes, sir.
Exactly!

So what do you think is the type of context clue

used in this sentence class?
Use of examples, sir.
Excellent!

Another type of context clue is the use of

examples.

C. APPLICATION

Since you already know context clues, I know

that you are now ready for our next activity. Let us
listen to Big Brother. “Housemates, I know it’s getting
tougher. But always remember,
cooperation, creativity and
perseverance are the names of the
game. Housemate Class Vice
President, please go to the confession
room for your task 3.”

(The student will read the task)

This activity is entitled, “IT’S SHOWTIME!”

This time, you will work on the different activities
to tap your skills and potentials. All you have to
do is to appreciate context clues through
performing differentiated tasks. I will group
you according to your ability. Those who are
good in singing, please stay in one side.
Those who are good in writing, stay here.
Those who are good in slogan making,
assemble yourselves there, and lastly those
who are good in acting, you stay together.
So, proceed now to your respective groups
according to your talents.

GROUP TASK

SINGERS Compose/Sing a song which lyrics has

context clues.

D. ABSTRACTION

Let’s have a review on what we have

Discussed earlier using a graphic organizer.
Again, what are context clues?
Context clues are hints found within a
sentence, paragraph, or passage that a reader
can use to understand the meanings of new
or unfamiliar words.
Very good!

Who can now give the three types of context of

context clue that we have discussed?
Use of synonyms, use of antonyms, and use of
Examples, sir.
What is your clue in getting the meaning of
unfamiliar words using synonym?
Our clue in getting the meaning of the
unfamiliar words using synonym is through
looking for “comma, dashes, parentheses,
and the restatement of the unfamiliar words to
the understandable one in phrase, clause or
another sentence.”
How about the other type which is the
antonym?
We can get the meaning of unfamiliar words
using antonym through the use of the words
“however, not, but, otherwise, unless, instead,
on the other hand, on the contrary, while and
never”, sir.
And the last is synonym.
So how can we get the meaning of the
unfamiliar words using examples?
We can get the definition or the meaning of
unfamiliar words using examples through
looking at the words “such
as, for instance, and for example.”

The clue in getting the

definition or the meaning of
unfamiliar words using
examples is through looking at
the words “such as, for instance, SYNONYM
and for example.”

The clue in getting the meaning

of the unfamiliar words using
synonym is through looking for

You all did a great job! Now for your final task,
let us hear again from Big Brother.
(The students will listen to Kuya’s Voice)
“Congratulations, housemates! You are
about to successfully complete your daily
tasks. But for you last challenge, you will
be challenged even more. It’s time to see
how well did you understand your lesson
inside my house. House guest, Mr.
Biraquit, please proceed to the confession
room for the final task of the housemates.”
Okay, class. It’s time for your assessment.

V. ASSIGNMENT

FOLLOW-UP

The Velveteen Rabbit by Margery Williams

For a long time, he lived in the toy cupboard or on the nursery floor. No one thought very
much about him. He was naturally shy. Being only made of velveteen, some of the more
expensive toys quite snubbed him. The mechanical toys were very superior and looked down
upon everyone else. They were full of modern ideas, and they pretended they were real. The
model boat, who had lived through two seasons and lost most of his paint, caught the tone from
them. He never missed an opportunity of referring to his rigging in technical terms. The Rabbit
could not claim to be a model of anything, for he didn’t know that real rabbits existed. He thought
they were all stuffed with sawdust like himself. He understood that sawdust was quite out-of-date
and should never be mentioned in modern circles.

Directions: Write the letter of the word on the right which has almost the same meaning as the
word or phrase on the left. Use the words in the text to understand the meaning.

_____1. Naturally A. Talking about

_____2. Velveteen B. chance
_____3. Expensive C. Old fashioned
_____4. Snubbed D. Soft wood chips
_____5. Superior E. Times of the year
_____6. Seasons F. Soft cloth
_____7. Opportunity G. usually
_____8. Referring to H. lived
_____9. Technical I. Special knowledge
_____10. Exited J. ignored
_____11. Sawdust K. Cost a lot of money
_____12. Out-of-date L. Stuck up
