1. CSR Initiatives of an organisation- NESTLE

Nestlé India Limited (the ‘Company’) is a leading Nutrition, Health and Wellness Company.
As a responsible Company, it has since its inception, participated in business activities
which help in improving the quality of life for the communities where it operates. This also
includes creating better livelihood opportunities.

In consultation with stakeholders, the Company has decided to focus its activities on the
following areas, where it is in a position to create maximum value. These focus areas are:

Nutrition: A large part of our population is impacted by the double burden of malnutrition.
Improving nutrition awareness of communities is a focus area.

Water and Sanitation: India is among the world’s most water stressed regions. Additionally,
safe drinking water is a concern in many parts of the country. The Company would focus
on helping farmers reduce water usage in agriculture, raising awareness on water
conservation and providing access to water and sanitation.

• Rural Development: Supporting the sustainable development of farmers will be the third
focus area.

• Livelihood: Unemployment is a major issue impacting development and health outcomes.


The Company would focus on livelihood enhancement through trainings.

• Education: The Company would focus on supporting education, with a special focus on
education for the girl child.

The Company will continue to engage with stakeholders including farmers, experts, NGOs
and the Government and would take up such other CSR activities in line with Government’s
intent and which are important for society. The above areas are mapped with the activities
as prescribed in Schedule VII to the Companies Act, 2013 in the Annexure. While the focus
of CSR efforts will be in the local areas and areas around it where the Company operates,
the Company may also undertake projects where societal needs are high or in special
situations (such as in the case of natural disasters etc.). CSR expenditure will include all
expenditure incurred by the Company on CSR Programmes undertaken in accordance with
the approved CSR Plan. Surplus arising out of the CSR projects or programs or activities
shall not form part of the business profit of the Company.
2. Study the SDGs & link the organization’s initiatives with the SDGs –

o SDG 1 is to: “End poverty in all its forms everywhere”. Achieving SDG 1 would end
extreme poverty globally by 2030. Donate what you don’t use. More than 700 million
people still live in extreme poverty.
o SDG 2 is to: “End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition, and promote
sustainable agriculture”.
o SDG 3 is to: “Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages”.
Vaccinate your family. Vaccinations resulted in an 80% drop in measles deaths
between 2000 and 2017.
o SDG 4 is to: "Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong
learning opportunities for all". Help educate the children in your community. 617
million children and adolescents lack minimum proficiency in reading and
mathematics.
o SDG 5 is to: "Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls". Empower
women and girls and ensure their equal rights. 1 in 3 women has experienced physical
and/or sexual violence.
o SDG 6 is to: "Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation
for all". Avoid wasting water. Water scarcity affects more than 40% of the world’s
population.
o SDG 7 is to: "Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for
all". Use only energy-efficient appliances and light bulbs. Three billion people still
lack clean cooking fuels and technologies.
o SDG 8 is to: "Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and
productive employment and decent work for all". Create job opportunities for youth.
One-fifth of young people are not in education, employment or training.
o SDG 9 is to: "Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable
industrialization, and foster innovation". Fund projects that provide basic
infrastructure. Roads, water, sanitation and electricity remain scarce in many
developing countries.
o SDG 10 is to: "Reduce income inequality within and among countries". Support the
marginalized and disadvantaged. The poorest 40% of the population earn less than
25% of global income.
o SDG 11 is to: "Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and
sustainable". Bike, walk or use public transportation. 9 out of 10 residents breathe
polluted air.
o SDG 12 is to: "Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns". Recycle
paper, plastic, glass and aluminium. By 2050, the equivalent of almost 3 planets could
be required to sustain current lifestyles.
o SDG 13 is to: "Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts by
regulating emissions and promoting developments in renewable energy". Act now to
stop global warming. Global emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) have increased by
almost 50% since 1990.
o SDG 14 is to: "Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources
for sustainable development". Avoid plastic bags to keep the oceans clean. Over 3
billion people depend on marine and coastal biodiversity for their livelihoods.
o SDG 15 is to: "Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems,
sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land
degradation and halt biodiversity loss". 3 Plant a tree and help protect the
environment. Forests are more than home to 80% of all terrestrial species of animals,
plants and insects.
o SDG 16 is to: "Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development,
provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive
institutions at all levels". Stand up for human rights. In 2018, the number of people
fleeing war, persecution and conflict exceeded 70 million.
o SDG 17 is to: "Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the global
partnership for sustainable development". Lobby your government to boost
development financing. Achieving the SDGs could open up US$ 12 trillion of market
opportunities and create 380 million new jobs.

SDG-13 – Nestle’s efforts to protect biodiversity which are led by their regenerative
agriculture initiative and their Forest Positive strategy, and approaches to sustainable
sourcing and water stewardship, as well as certain specific local projects.
SDG-3 -As a food company with a global presence, Nestle extensive portfolio ranges from
beverages and meal solutions to confectionery and healthcare nutrition products. They
leverage decades of experience and R&D expertise to offer safe, affordable, sustainable,
high-quality nutrition for people everywhere and across all life stages.
They are committed to developing products that are good for the planet.

SDG-6-Nestle rely on water throughout their agricultural supply chains and operations and
recognize their role in helping to ensure access to sufficient clean water. They continue to
reduce withdrawals in their factories, help farmers to introduce sustainable practices, and
help enable access to safe water and sanitation in communities near their operations and
supply chains.
Nestlé Waters will advance the regeneration of the water cycle to help create a positive
water impact everywhere it operates by 2025.
SDG-5 Human rights are inextricably linked to their shared future. By respecting and
advancing them in their value chain, they are building a foundation that contributes to a
resilient future for planet and its people.
They have the size, scale and reach to inspire others and help drive collective action. They
are focused on transforming farming practices at the heart of the food system while enabling
a just and equitable transition. People and respect for human rights are at the core of Nestlé’s
culture and values. They are committed to raising awareness, promoting best practices and
empowering people across the value chain.

SDG-8 Nestle ambition is to help 10 million young people around the world access
economic opportunities by 2030 through employment and employability, agripreneurship,
and entrepreneurship.
Nestlé needs YOUth initiative aims to help young people gain access to apprenticeships,
traineeships and job opportunities – empowering them with skills they need to thrive.
Supporting future Nestlé farmers means they can train them in regenerative agriculture.

Key Learning’s –

I learned that CSR plays a crucial role in any organisation since it allows the public to view a
company as more than just a money-making machine. CSR initiatives are likely to
subconsciously garner the favour of the public because the company can be more closely
associated with giving back to society.

I have learnt about what all CSR initiatives did incorporates successfully like Nestle
launched Project Vriddhi under its CSR initiatives in order to work towards building a
healthier society and positively impacting the lives of people in marginalised communities.
Project Vriddhi, in collaboration with SM Sehgal Foundation, is a three-year village
adoption project started in 2019. The project is aimed at improving the livelihoods of 1,500
people in Rohira village in Nuh district, Haryana.

I have learnt about the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals to transform the
world. Nestle’s CSR initiatives, founded on strong principles of transparency, honesty,
integrity and fairness are playing a significant role in building an equitable and just society
in the country.

I have learned about Nestle has initiated the project “HILLDAARI” in Mussoorie,
Dalhousie, and Nainital in order to empower waste workers. The project focuses on working
collectively with local stakeholders like urban local bodies, institutions, residents,
households, waste generators, and waste workers to raise awareness about anti-littering and
segregation at source.By promoting CSR initiatives organizations can build better brand
recognition, increase sales and customer loyalty, improve financial performance. As well as
work on attracting talent and retaining staff. And work towards organizational growth.
