General Instructions:
(ii) This question paper has three sections: Section A, Section B and Section C.
(iii) Section A contains three questions of two marks each, Section B contains eight questions of three
marks each, Section C contains one case study-based question of five marks.
(iv) There is no overall choice. However, an internal choice has been provided in one question of two
marks and two questions of three marks. You have to attempt only one of the choices in such questions.
(v) You may use log tables if necessary but use of calculator is not allowed.
SECTION A
3)Ten particles are moving at the speed of 2,3,4,5,5,5,6,6,7 and ms-1. Calculate rms speed, average
speed and most probable speed.
(OR)
A nurse measured the average heart beats of a patient and reported to the doctor in terms of time
period as 0.8 s. Express the heart beat of the patient in terms of number of beats measured per minute.
Section B
4)Derive an expression for the elastic energy stored per unit volume of a wire
5)State and prove Bernoulli's therom for a flow of incompressible , non-viscous and streamlined flow of
fluid
6)Explain why
(a)The angle of contact of mercury with glass is obtuse, while that of waterwith glass is acute.
(b)Water on a clean glass surface tends to spread out while mercury on thesame surface tends to form
drops. (Put differently, water wets glass whilemercury does not.)

A hydraulic automobile lift is designed to lift cars with a maximum mass of 3000kg. The area of cross-
section of the piston carrying the load is 425 cm2. Whatmaximum pressure would the smaller piston
have to bear?
7) Two cylinders A and B of equal capacity are connected to each other via a stopcock.A contains a gas at
standard temperature and pressure. B is completely evacuated. The entire system is thermally insulated.
The stopcock is suddenly opened. Answerthe following :(a)What is the final pressure of the gas in A and
B ?(b)What is the change in internal energy of the gas ?(c)What is the change in the temperature of the
gas ?(d)Do the intermediate states of the system (before settling to the final equilibriumstate) lie on its
P-V-T surface ?
OR
9) Explain the isobaric process and derive the work done in this process
11)a) A hydraulic lift is designed to lift cars of maximum mass 300 kg. The area of cross-section of piston
carrying the load is 4.25×10-2m2. What is the maximum pressure would be small piston
The figure shows the different modes of transfer of heat, heat transfer is defined as the movement of
heat across the border of the system due to a difference in temperature between the system and its
surroundings. The temperature difference exists between the two systems, heat will find a way to
transfer from the higher to the lower system.
