FACULTY OF BIOMEDICAL
ENGINEERING

ii
ABSTRACT
The Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences & Technology are proposing the
construction of a new faculty of Biomedical Engineering. Therefore, we have made a detailed
feasibility report on the development of the department. The new department of Biomedical
Engineering at GIK will have an objective of imparting quality education in the multidisciplinary
fields at both graduate and postgraduate levels. This new faculty of Biomedical Engineering will
support the advancement and application of the University’s initiatives. It will significantly
enhance the research infrastructure, bring together faculty, and research groups involved in the
initiatives of Molecular Biomedical Engineering. However, little research has been undertaken to
get the information about the pros and cons of the new field in accordance with the environment
of GIK. Therefore, to address the potential issues, the Rector of the institute is taking the bold
steps to build the visionary, interdisciplinary educational and research environment needed to
achieve breakthrough contributions in fields such as engineering human tissues, new
pharmaceuticals based on RNA enzymes and aptamers, and understanding the genetic basis for
numerous diseases. The core aim of this report is to elaborate the feasibility of a completely new
and different department in the GIK Institute. The findings of this empirical research helped us to
highlight that, Islamabad which is the nearest capital to the institute, is home for approximately
300 biosciences firms and is one of the fastest growing city for life sciences and engineering
industries. Between 1998 and 2003, the number of companies grew by 35%, outpacing the
national growth rate. GIKI total bioscience academic research funding from KPK government is
around $300 million initially and will grew up to 31% once the faculty is established. Also, the
research project will identify areas for future research and several key recommendation to guide
current students to become “world citizens.” The University will have to focus on major strategic
initiatives that will increase its visibility and distinguish it as the leader in global education.

Chapter # 01

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Chapter overview:

In this chapter the Researcher is going to discuss the background and origin of biomedical
engineering, the solution of the problems related to biomedical engineering, is biomedical
engineering a better option for the medical students or not and what this stream leads to and
providing the significance of biomedical engineering.

1.2 Background of the study:

Biomedical engineering being unknown made scientists and engineers not to possess common
backgrounds even in the late 1800s or before the Second World War. Some objectives must be
concerned i.e., if we ponder over the definition of a biomedical engineer, it is noticed that the
chemical and agricultural engineers, concerned with fermentation processes, so far have been
performing the job of a biomedical engineer, as well as collaborating with biologists and their
systems. Also, its rules and concepts are also applied by the civil engineers doing specialization
in sanitisation. Over the years, the medical profession has also been beneficial for many
mechanical engineers for the evolution of artificial branches. Air-conditioning is in fact another
field of biomedical engineering.
Nowadays, biology and engineering have an especially important linkage, such as in medical and
various other life carrying fields. Moreover, due to an increasing consciousness of the necessity
for interconnection among the engineers and their relationship with medical sciences, an
engineer is fully capable of playing several roles of biomedical engineering, including human
medicine, and hence, taking in concern the contributions Biomedical engineering and sciences
serving solution for engineering troubles.

1.3 Statement of the problem:

Every year more than 0.5 million candidates apply to seek admission in medical colleges.
Whereas there are only thirteen thousand seats registered (6850 public seats and 6150 private
seats) across Pakistan. The students that fail to secure their seats in medical colleges require a
platform to continue their studies. This can be resolved by introducing Biomedical Engineering
in GIKI.
1
According to Times there are less than one hundred thousand registered biomedical engineers
worldwide. Whereas in Pakistan this engineering course is offered by only two other institutes
(NUST and UET Lahore). Thus, there is a huge demand for such engineers not only in Pakistan
but also worldwide.

1.4 Report questions:

1) Is Biomedical Engineering a suitable path for developing a good career?
2) What is the role of a Biomedical Engineer?

1.5 Report objectives:

● Provide social fundamental knowledge to students in life sciences.
● Encouraging self-learning and innovation among the students to provide them with
a better and fruitful future.
● Produce individuals who can work well either independently or in a team.
● The introduction of new faculty of biomedical engineering will provide better
university ranking.
● Be world-class in the advancement of biomedical sciences and engineering
education, professional services, and research for the betterment of human health.
● To provide quality biomedical engineering education through amalgamation of
engineering with the biomedical sciences.
GIKI will provide specializations in the following in later stretch:

1. Bioinformatics - uses CS and biology knowledge. For example, using coding languages
such as python or R to solve human genomics problems.
2. Biomechanics - making human prosthetics such as knee or hip implants.
3. Biomaterials - researching new materials that are compatible with the body
4. Neural engineering - lots of human physiology involved here regarding the brain and the
nervous system. Involves both stem cell experiments and a CS component to it if you are
going in the direction of brain-computer interfaces.
5. Biosensors - about building sensors that can answer help detect problems in the body like
heart rate monitors, glucose monitors etc. Have both an ECE and a CS component to it.
2
1.6 Significance of report:
The Twenty first century is rightfully called the period of life sciences. Gradually the World is
dynamic globally and the period has the appliance of knowledge in each ground of science
particularly biomedical science. Other scientific breakthroughs in the industrial spheres and
medical are expected to a great extent of funded research programs underway in most of the
states of the world. Deepening in the fields of medicine and biology, such as anthropomorphic
ordination combination and field work to build cells and organ functions, have conduct to a
critical modification in many commercial parts and improved the biological engineering
occupation. The age of medical specialty remains within the immature phase, ascending steady
during the time that we tend to proceed to flourish the sector of biomedical Engineering. The
developing countries like Pakistan are facing difficulties to deliver the proper health treatment in
health care centers. The system of health in Pakistan is presently researching many
transformations appearing in the district, federal and provincial level notably to enhance the
consignment of medical services to the society. Although, our society’s medical service
providers i.e., physicians, surgeons, and others toil to deliver life-improving and life-saving
service to thousands of Pakistanis but, the quality level and potency of responsibility fluctuate
over the nation.

1.7 Plan of action:

The researcher will obtain the objectives discussed in the previous section as per follow:

● Issue NOC from HEC as well as PEC.

● Take approval of the courses to be taught to the students during their degree from HEC as
well as PEC.
● Authenticate the courses using Program Learning Objectives PLOs and CLOs.
● Assess the land where the new faculty is to be made.
● Hire an architect company to design the building with the required labs and classrooms
etc.
● Release the tender for the attainment of furniture, elevators, computers, fiber optics and
lights.
● Start the process of hiring the faculty members, instructors, teaching assistants, lab
engineers. This can be done by advertising the opportunities for selected pool of
graduates within Pakistan if any or conducting a test or interview of people coming from
outside Pakistan.
● After hiring the faculty members consult them regarding the tools required for the lab and
research work and try to build a partnership with a multinational company for products.
3
● Make a formal prospectus of the new faculty and distribute in various collages throughout
Pakistan to get the maximum number of applicants within Pakistan.
● Hire a web designer to design and manage the web page and a web portal of the new
faculty. Such that people can fill the application online and submit their attested grades.
Manage the website properly so that even students outside Pakistan can apply without
any hazard.
● Advertise the new faculty through various channels, especially at intermediate level and
students doing ‘A’ levels so the students are fully aware of the new faculty.
● Invite researchers from abroad to do research in the field of bio-medical engineering and
give lectures regarding their research to students.

1.8 Feasibility of the study:

According to the pilot study done by the researcher, the introduction of new faculty of
Biomedical engineering will provide better university ranking. As only two universities in
Pakistan offer biomedical engineering so amalgamation of engineering with biomedical will
provide more opportunities. As there are less than 0.1 million registered biomedical engineers
worldwide, so introduction of this new faculty will help to introduce new developments in the
field.

1.9 Organization of the report:

This report is comprised of five chapters, including subheadings in each chapter. Chapter one
gives a formal Introduction on the proposed idea, providing a complete overview about the
project. The second chapter talks about the brief history of biomedical engineering. The third
chapter deals with the sources and collection of data along with its methodology. Analysis of the
data and questionnaire is included in chapter four. Finally, chapter five is about the conclusion of
the feasibility of the proposed project as well as report findings and recommendations.

1.10 Chapter review:

Biomedical engineering dates to World War 2 era when several different disciplines of
engineering collaborated with biomedical sciences to further enhance them. With the passage of
time this came to be known as biomedical engineering and much advancement were made.
Biomedical engineers work extensively in implementation of engineering concepts and design
ideas to drugs and biology for aid merchandise. They present research findings to scientists,
nonscientists’ executives, clinicians, and the public. Biomedical engineering further expands to
bioinformatics, biomechanics, neural engineering, biomaterials, and biosensors. At present in
Pakistan only two universities, NUST and UET Lahore offer this engineering and due to these
increase in students the number of seats available is very less. The proposed idea is to start this
engineering in GIK institute, after fulfilling the requirements the construction for the faculty will
be started and soon.
