INSTRUCTIONS:
1 . This is a closed notes exam. To receive credit for a problem, you must show all the working.
Answers without working will be given ZERO credit.
2. The use of cell phone or any other source of communication is strictly prohibited during
examination. Doing so will be considered cheating.
3. Write your name and Reg. no. clearly on the answer sheet.
4. There is no credit for the assumptions, schematics, governing equations
and units. However, marks will be deducted for not writing them
appropriately.

Q-2 (CLO-2, PLO-2, C-4): Air flows into the jet engine shown in Figure at a rate of 9 slugs/s and a
speed of 300 ft/s. Upon landing, the engine exhaust exits through the reverse thrust mechanism with a
speed of 900 ft/s in the direction indicated. Determine the reverse thrust applied by the engine to the
airplane. Assume the inlet and exit pressures are atmospheric and that the mass flowrate of fuel is
negligible compared to the air flowrate through the engine. Compare and explain the change in thrust if
the angle is increased to 45°.

Q-3 (CLO-2, PLO-2, C-4): Five litres/s of water enter the rotor shown in Figure along the axis of
rotation. The cross-sectional area of each of the three nozzle exits normal to the relative velocity is 18
mm2. In your analysis, make a comparison for three different angles of (a) θ=¿ 0°, (b) θ=¿ 30°, (c)
θ=¿ 60° to find out:
i) How large is the resisting torque required to hold the rotor stationary?
ii) How fast will the rotor spin steadily if the resisting torque is reduced to zero?

Q-4 (CLO-3, PLO-2, C-3): The drag, on a sphere located in a pipe through which a fluid is flowing is to
be determined experimentally (Figure below). Assume that the drag is a function of the sphere diameter d
, the pipe diameter, D, the fluid velocity, V, and the fluid density, ρ . Apply the Buckingham Pi Theorem
to determine (a) The dimensionless parameters for this problem. (b) Some experiments using water
indicate that for d=0.2∈¿ , D=0.5∈¿ and V =2 ft /s , the drag is 1.5 ×10−3 lb . If possible, estimate the
drag on a sphere located in a 2-ft-diameter pipe through which water is flowing with a velocity of 6 ft/s.
The sphere diameter is such that geometric similarity is maintained. If it is not possible, explain why not.

Q-5 (CLO-2, PLO-2, C-4): The three tanks shown in Figure are connected by pipes with friction factors
of 0.03 for each pipe. In your analysis of this network of pipes, find out the water velocity in each pipe.
Neglect minor losses. Take g=32.2 ft /s 2.
