This test method describes a procedure for determining the particle size distribution of fine and coarse aggregates extracted from bituminous mixtures using sieves with square openings. It is used to determine compliance with specifications and provide data for controlling aggregate production for bituminous mixtures.

This test method covers determining the particle size distribution of fine and coarse aggregates extracted from bituminous mixtures. It does not address safety concerns or purport to address all safety issues associated with its use.

Apparatus required includes balances readable to 0.1g, sieves with square openings, an oven capable of maintaining 110±5°C, and containers for holding samples during sieving and agitation.

Standard Test Method for

Mechanical Size Analysis of Extracted Aggregate1
This standard is issued under the fixed designation D5444; the number immediately following the designation indicates the year of
original adoption or, in the case of revision, the year of last revision. A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval. A
superscript epsilon (´) indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.
