Capstone Proposal
Capstone Proposal
What is your inquiry question that interests you for further research? It should be a question that
connects with a purpose, passion or personalized area of interest for you. This is a question that
you cannot just google an answer for. Please see examples from your Capstone booklet.
Rationale/context: Detail your reasons for choosing this inquiry question. Explain WHY you are
choosing to investigate this topic as a major area of focus. How does this area of inquiry
connect to your passion(s), purpose? Why is it of personal interest to you?
I chose this inquiry question because boxing is something I’m very passionate about and I have
a lot of respect for boxing coaches and everything they do. Boxing coaches can act as a father
figure, a mentor, they build personal connections with their students. This got me thinking about
how every boxing coach has their own way of connecting with their students and their own
training method and what they think is the best way to train their students.
Career connections: What is your intended career area at this point in time? What
connections does this inquiry question have to your life, academic and/ or career goals?
Interdisciplinary and core competencies connections: What subject areas and core
competencies will be connected with your project? Outline and explain the connections.
I have to go into job shadowing being completely open minded and like a sponge to any
information I can learn.
I definitely won't know everything about coaching so knowing when to ask for help is crucial.
Social Responsibility
Being able to connect with a variety of people is a must in order to be a successful boxing
coach.
I can identify and appreciate different perspectives on issues and use and evaluate strategies to
resolve problems.
This is especially useful when I see something a student is doing wrong and I am able to use
certain strategies to correct them
Critical Thinking
Being able to critique my learning will be useful when job shadowing a boxing coach
I can ask good quality questions, gather relevant information, and come up with well-developed
conclusions.
I am able to ask quality questions to better understand a topic. This will come in handy when I
don't understand something the boxing coach is trying to teach.
Creative Thinking
Communication
I can reflect on the processes of learning and share what I have learned
I am able to reflect on what I learn from my boxing coach and then share what he’s taught me.
I understand how to use my strengths and abilities to my advantage and I can explain how I use
them to contribute to my community
Knowing my strengths and how to apply them is very useful when helping out the boxing coach.
Capstone Presentation medium: select one or more project mediums you wish to use to
present your project. Outline and give details about how you will present your project once
completed. You may use a combination of mediums.
Description of my Capstone project. Specific Project Details of the Capstone Project: what
will you research, create, study, produce, solve, investigate? What product will be produced
at the end of this project for evaluation. Write a one-page description outlining your
proposal.
My capstone project focuses on the occupation strand. This allows me to get firsthand
experience into a job and sport I'm very passionate about. To start my capstone I've reached
out to a local martial arts gym called Revolution Martial Arts and have contacted the owner
about job shadowing and helping out with their boxing classes over the course of 40 hours. If all
goes well I will begin my job shadowing and see exactly how the boxing coach operates his
class. I will learn how he connects with his students on a personal level, how he teaches the
basics of boxing , and how he drills these techniques. I will contribute by helping prepare before
the class, help teach the class by going around to make sure everyone's form is proper as well
as holding pads for some students. For every class I job shadow I’m going to document
everything I do for that class and take pictures of me helping the students. Over the course of
40 hours I’m going to find out why my boxing coach likes to run the class the way he does and
what he thinks is the best way to teach boxing. Once the 40 hours of Job shadowing comes to
an end I will take everything I’ve learnt and will make some YouTube Videos covering basic
boxing techniques such as Footwork, Defense, and Striking.
Since I wrote this capstone draft proposal I have switched my capstone strand from occupation
to project. Instead of job shadowing I am strictly making a handful of instructional videos
covering the basics of striking, defense, footwork, and why boxing is the best sport and what
you need to join. I will take these videos and edit them and then upload them to the YouTube
channel I will make.
I will need to learn how to edit and post short tutorial videos on YouTube teaching people how
they can improve or learn basic boxing techniques. The only thing I will need for this is my
phone to keep track of what I learn from my coach while job shadowing, and to record and
upload videos.
One mentor I will need is a boxing coach that is willing to let me job shadow him/her. I have
already reached out to a gym called Revolution Martial Arts and brought up the idea of job
shadowing for a school project and the owner said he would get back to me and let me know for
sure. My plan is to build a good relationship with the boxing coach and take in as much
information as possible and reflect what I have learned into my YouTube videos to make
informative and quality demonstration videos.
Project limitations: What are some project limitations and potential obstacles that you foresee
that might affect progress with your Capstone Project?
One of the potential issues I see happening is the martial arts gym I've reached out to not
wanting me to job shadow for the full 40 hours. Another obstacle I see happening is potentially
new COVID restrictions being mandated while I’m job shadowing. Besides these issues I don't
see any other obstacles that would get in the way of my capstone project.
Other considerations: List and detail any other related information/ considerations about
your project that you feel should be included in your project proposal.
Since I have switched my capstone from the occupation strand to the project strand, a
significant amount of this proposal is now slightly altered to best suit my new capstone plan.
