Answer Key

Can write a personal introduction to a webpage.

Can talk about clothes and appearance.

Sample Response
You are making your own website and need to write a personal introduction about yourself.
In your personal introduction:
• Write about yourself and your family.

• Say which clothes you usually wear for school and in your free time.

• Write about your everyday routines.

Your personal introduction should be between 80 and 120 words.

My name is Marco and I’m fifteen years old. I live in Santander in Spain with my mum and dad and two
sisters. Mum’s a teacher and dad has a shop. I go to school in Santander. I like English and Maths.

My favourite clothes are jeans and a T-shirt. I wear a hoodie too in the winter. I wear a baseball cap with the
name of my football team. I don’t have any piercings or earrings. For school, I don’t wear a uniform. I have to
be quite smart. I wear trousers and a shirt. At home I wear jeans and T-shirts.

Now, I am wearing a red T-shirt with Adidas on it, blue jeans and black socks.

Answer Key

To: Gilles
From: .

Hi Gilles
How are you? I hope you’re well and that your family are all OK. I’m doing fine and everyone here is well.
You asked me about keeping fit and healthy. The first thing to do is to eat well. Don’t eat lots of fast food like
burgers and fries, and drink water instead of cola or lemonade. You should eat lots of fruit and vegetables. I
think you should do more exercise too. Maybe you should go running or cycling two or three times a week.
Are you getting enough sleep? People our age need about nine hours sleep a night. Don’t use your
smartphone or tablet for an hour before bedtime and don’t have any tea or coffee either.
Every week, I go to the gym and go cycling about five times. I only eat unhealthy food if I go to the cinema.
Anyway, good luck!

Mid-Year Test - Writing

Can write a biography.

Can talk about cultural activities, likes and dislikes.

Sample Response

You are doing a project in your class at school about writing biographies. You decide to write about one
of your friends.
In your biography:
• Introduce your friend.
• Write about the cultural activities your friend likes doing.

• Say when and how you met your friend.

• Say why you like your friend.

Your biography should be between 100 and 130 words.

Biography

This biography is about Helga. She is fourteen years old. She was born in Berne in Switzerland. She still lives
there now. She has got two brothers and she lives with them and her mum and dad. She has a dog. The
dog’s name is Kandy and she loves her dog and spends a lot of time looking after it.

She likes watching sci-fi films and documentaries. She also listens to lots of different types of music,
especially hip-hop and pop.

I met Helga at primary school. We were friends from the beginning. I like her because she is very honest and
she’s very chatty and cheerful. She makes me feel happy when I am sad.

End-of-Year Test - Writing

Can write a postcard.

Can write a personal email.

Sample Responses

Group A
You have just moved to a new city because your parents both got new jobs. Write a postcard to a friend
telling them about your new home and town.
In your postcard:

• Describe your new house or flat.

• Describe the new city

• Say what you have done since you moved there;

• Tell them about your new school and classmates.

Your postcard should be between 120 and 160 words.

Hi Jacques
How are you? How is your family? Are you still enjoying school (without me!)?
I’m emailing from my new flat. It’s quite a big flat. There are four flats made from one big old house. I like it
because my bedroom is very big. The city is OK too. There are lots of things to do here and a lot of shops.
You would really like the music shop – they have some great guitars. There are some good parks too. You
can play football there.
Since we moved here, I’ve started at my new school. It’s OK, but not like our school. It was hard making
friends but now I have a few and we hang out together in the city centre or at the park. They are like you and
me really. They like music and sport and all the usual stuff.
Come and visit soon – it’s only two hours on the train.
See you soon

Group B
You recently received an email from a friend telling you about their plans for the future. You decide to
reply to your friend to tell them about your plans.
In your email:

• Ask for and give the latest news about each other.

• Tell your friend what your plans are for studying.

• Say which job you would really like to do and why.

• Tell your friend about any other plans or dreams you have for your future.

Your email should be between 120 and 160 words.

Hi Martha
Thanks for your email. I’m doing fine, thanks, and so are my family. How about you and your family?
It was interesting to read about your plans for the future. I’m not so sure about my future, but I think I want to
go to university after I finish school. I probably want to study science or maybe something to become an
accountant. My dream job would be working as a scientist for the police, you know, helping to find out who did
the crimes. That would be great.
My other dream is to get better at playing the piano. I’m quite good now, but I’d like to be much better so I can
play with an orchestra or something like that. I think I’ll need to do a lot more practice if I want that dream to
come true!
Anyway, I hope everything is OK with you. Email me again soon!
