The document discusses a software update for Canon imageRUNNER copiers to address various field issues. It provides details on the software update and instructions for upgrading systems of different versions.

The software update addresses issues like a page control error, errors printing small characters, disappearing fax images, and an issue registering a license key. It also updates the language and PCL components.

When upgrading from very old versions below v60, an 'ALL CLEAR' must be performed and address book and user data need to be backed up. Special steps are also required if upgrading from v10 or earlier.

The following changes occur when upgrading the System Software of the imageRUNNER 2016i/ 2020i
copiers from v66.01.01 to v70.01.01:
No. Description
The PCL 16M-OPT has been revised due to the upgrade of System

Software v70.01.01 for the imageRUNNER 2016i/ 2020i.

PROCEDURE:
Points to note when upgrading from ver. 10 or earlier to ver. 60 or later:
When upgrading from a previous version to v60.02, an “ALL Clear” will need to be performed. In order to
back up the required data files, System Software v15.99 for the imageRUNNER 2016/ 2020 or v10.99 for
the imageRUNNER 2016i/ 2020i will need to be installed first. When “ALL Clear” is performed after
System Software v15.99 for the imageRUNNER 2016/ 2020 and v10.99 for the imageRUNNER 2016i/
2020i has been installed, the following user information is deleted, so back up of all data is required
beforehand.
- Address Book
- User Data

NOTE: DO NOT DOWNGRADE TO PREVIOUS VERSIONS OF SYSTEM SOFTWARE OR THE

IMAGERUNNER UNIT WILL LOCK UP!

Note:
Backing-up the address book using the remote-UI is not recommended. Importing &
exporting the data may cause data loss.

* Back up the data and upgrade the version according to the following "Upgrade Procedures".

Note: If you use v10.02, the USB Export might not activate correctly.
[2] Using the USB Export, save the necessary user data to the PC. (See Page 11-3 in the Service Manual)
Note: If the PC does not recognize the USB Cable during back up, check the device manager to see if “USB
Printing Support” display’s a question mark. If so, go to install driver and let the PC install it. After the
driver is installed, the PC will then recognize the USB Cable.
[3] Using Service Support Tool, upgrade the BootROM. (ver.61.02) (Before you use System ver.61.02, make
sure to install Boot ver.61.02.)

Supplementary information:
If "OK" appears on the touch panel display of the main unit, data is completed to be downloaded by
overwriting on the ROM.

Points to note:
(1) If you upgrade from the old version to v60.02 (or later), the BootROM area is increased.
At the same time, the SYSTEM writing start address (FLASH-ROM) is changed.
The SYSTEM writing start address is included in the BootROM v60.02 and later, so after the BootROM is
downloaded, turn OFF and ON the power, so that the new SYSTEM writing start address is reflected.

Upgrade procedures
<Without options>
1. Overwrite BootROM.
2. Check that "OK" appears on the touch panel display. Then, turn OFF and ON the power manually.
(Download mode starts.)
3. Overwrite SYSTEM.

<With PCL (OPT16MB)>

1. Overwrite BootROM.
2. Check that "OK" appears on the touch panel display. Then, turn OFF and ON the power manually.
(Download mode starts.)
3. Overwrite PCL (OPT16).
4. Check that "OK" appears on the touch panel display. Then, turn OFF and ON the power manually.
(Download mode starts.)
5. Overwrite SYSTEM.

<With PCL (OPT32MB)>

1. Overwrite BootROM.
2. Check that "OK" appears on the touch panel display. Then, turn OFF and ON the power manually.
(Download mode starts.)
3. Overwrite PCL (OPT32)
4. Check that "OK" appears on the touch panel display. Then, turn OFF and ON the power manually.
(Download mode starts.)
5. Overwrite SYSTEM.

(2) When the following symptom occurs at the download using Service Support Tool (SST)
2-1. Symptom: After the BootROM is upgraded, the message "Rom write OK. Power OFF/ON?" is displayed
on the device. However, the Service Support Tool (SST) continues to count down and a message "Now
data writing" is displayed. After a few minutes, an error code "103" is displayed on the Service Support
Tool (SST).
Cause: Since the BootROM area is dramatically changed, this symptom occurs. The old BootROM
software executes the download process on the RAM and the new BootROM is overwritten on the ROM.
The table (vector table) is changed on the software, so the correct table cannot be referred. With this
condition, the download processing ends and an interruption occurs. Although the device tries to send the
download end notification to the Service Support Tool (SST), it cannot be sent to the Service Support
Tool (SST) correctly since the vector table is changed.
Workaround: Since the upgrade processing is completed on the device side correctly, turn OFF and ON
the power manually and proceed to the next step.
(3) When the following items are displayed after upgrading
1. On the main unit, "SCANNING MODE" is displayed.
2. On the main unit, "A3" is displayed for the cassette.

e-Support Filename: TP11 141.pdf
Date: 04-05-11

When these items are displayed, there is a problem in the RAM area of the main unit. An "ALL Clear" will
need to be performed.

IMPORTANT NOTES:
The latest Service Support Tool is v4.33Ez.

Note 1:
Upgrading When the Optional ROM is installed:
When installing the following options, the optional ROM (32MB) included in the package must be installed.
Installation of the optional ROM enables the controller to operate on the firmware of the optional ROM.
Therefore, when installing the optional ROM, be sure to check the versions of the main controller,
BootROM, and optional ROM, and when the versions do not match, upgrade the version using the Service
Support Tool so that they all match.
Options for which the optional ROM is included in the package:
- PCL Printer Kit-J1

Note 2:
Upgrading When Installing the Optional ROM
The optional ROM holds the firmware of the main controller in addition to that for additional functions. Its
installation will cause the controller to operate according to the firmware instructions of the optional ROM.
For this reason, it is important to check the version of the main controller, BootROM, and optional ROM
when installing the optional ROM, while upgrading as necessary to ensure version compatibility.

Further, if the optional ROM has been installed, it is also necessary to execute 'all clear' for the expansion of
data. Be sure to 'export' the user data using service mode before executing 'all clear', and to 'import' it after
executing 'all clear'.

Accessories That Come with the Optional ROM

- PCL Printer Kit-J1
Importing/Exporting User Data
- If using service mode (SSSW>SYSTEM SW>SW03), connect the USB cable. [SM, Page 11-3]
