Brief Introduction
Worth of Ideas in a Listening Text

A text may contain many ideas but not all of these are valuable. For an idea
to be valuable. It must be useful, valid, and if possible brilliant.
An idea is useful if it is relevant and applicable, for example, you may be
researching on a particular topic-causes of inflation, for instance. An idea that
explains the causes of inflation would be very valuable to you. An idea is applicable
if you can apply it in solving a problem or explaining a phenomenon. For example,
an idea that can use in understanding the effects of inflation on the quality of life
would be very useful.
An idea is valid if it is supported by facts, and it is based on sensible
reasoning. For example, a generalization that is based on facts in a valid idea. So is
a conclusion that is inferred from solid details.
An idea is brilliant if it is different, exceptional, and distinctive. The idea
comes from the author, and it is not the same as the ideas of other authors. At the
very least, it must be somewhat different from something else-whatever idea that it
wants to replace. It must offer some degree of improvement over other ideas.

Children’s Right

Every minute and everyday 245 children are born. That is 2.5 million
children a week and 128 million children a year. Every one of those children is
born full of potential that they won’t get there without everyone’s help.
From the start a baby needs to be loved, cared for and protected from
neglect. A baby needs to be protected for illness and disease. A baby needs to be
clothed and fed a healthy diet so he can grow strong.
As a child grows, he needs to feel safe to explore, that means a safe place to
live and play, safe drinking water, healthy food, clothes and someone to catch him
when he falls. So, he can reach his milestone and get help when he doesn’t.
As a child grows, he needs a chance to learn, free from discrimination. Also,
a child needs to be encouraged to ask questions to develop his curiosity and
unleashed their imagination. There is time to play sports, leisure activities and for
cultural traditions.
As a child matures, he needs a chance to spread his wings that means the
freedom to express himself and a freedom from exploitation in all forms. That also
means access to information and opportunities to gain experience that will help
them give back as adults.
Will you help a child reach his dreams? You have more power than you
think, nurture protect and inspire and teach, lastly, to help a child to reach his full
potential.

B. Voices of Youth
Directions: Read the qualities of Filipino youth today. Determine all the
essential ideas about youth by writing the word, phrases or sentences in the
diagram below.

1. The Filipino youth today are the reflection of what has become of the
Philippines and of the world. Today we stand as individuals with perceptions
based on our own beliefs of the present and deeply rooted ideals stemming
from the past; we are both united and self-sufficient, each one seeking to be
heard and to be known. The Filipino youth today are but the future of a
nation standing strong amidst all the hardships and trials, and this nation
will continue to stand no matter what through the endurance of its people.
---Beatrice Gloriana S. Garcia, 18

2. We can do amazing things. Pliant and malleable, we work with change.

Moreover, we fight for what is right and just. Yes, we do and say good and
bad things, just like everyone else, but if you listen and understand us, and
if given more opportunity, we, the Filipino youth of today, have the potential
to bring change in our country and the world. I hope this quote from Pope
Francis will motivate us and empower us to be instruments of positive
change: “Dear young people, do not bury your talents, the gifts that God has
given you! Do not be afraid to dream of great things!” ----Jheriemay Jen S.
Tolentino, 18

3. The Filipino youth today consist of ambitious and innovative individuals who
are preparing to immerse themselves in a highly digital and globalized world.
With technology and information having paramount value, they tend to be
more tech-savvy and computer literate. These characteristics, coupled with
the idea that they are more daring and adventurous, depict them as persons
who aim to solve societal issues in a modern way with hopes of becoming
drivers of change. ----Josh Cody H. Ong, 18
