Let Us Study!
Amazing! You got a good start! You seemed to have an idea of what you
will be learning in this activity sheet.

Activity 1: Let’s Identify!

Directions: Read and analyze the texts that you are about to read. Then identify
what writing technique is used in each text. Good luck!
Text 1

The idea of school uniforms seems like an outmoded concept for many
students in the Philippines especially to those who studied in public
schools. Yet, around the world, wearing school uniforms has been the rule.
Students studying whether in private or public schools are required to wear
school uniforms.

Often, the cause of bullying in schools are from people being different
for not wearing the precise clothes. If someone looks richer, most people
feel like they have a higher social status or more power. To the contrary,
uniforms allow students to learn on a fairer level, with less judgment about
choices of clothing, brands, or physical appearance.

A lot of students who wear school uniforms claimed that they feel
prouder of their school. Wearing school colors gives students a feeling of
being more connected to their school and classmates or even in the
community. Wearing school uniforms can also help people gain more self-
confidence because they will be identified as part of the institution.

The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused

by a new strain of coronavirus. This new virus and disease were unknown
before the outbreak began in Wuhan, China, in December 2019.

On 30 January 2020, the Philippine Department of Health reported

the first case of COVID-19 in the country with a 38-year-old female
Chinese national. On 7 March, the first local transmission of COVID-19
was confirmed. WHO is working closely with the Department of Health in
responding to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Text 3

Education is the key to success as an old adage goes. A good education

can teach a child how to learn and to have an independent learning. It may
also teach a child how to reason so that a child does not grow up to be
ignorant.

There are a lot of reasons why education is important in our society

today. One of these is it helps people how to learn. It is not how the child
accumulate knowledge either in the school or at home but how the child is
taught to learn things differently. If the child has been taught how to learn,
then he will bring such learning until he becomes an adult. Such learning
will teach him to succeed in the future.

If education is not seen as important, then one day it will just be all
about school scores and will be just a part of the curriculum. Without
education, learning is hard to achieve.

Now it’s time to answer the following questions.

1. What can you say about the texts that you have just read?

2. What writing technique used from each of the given texts?

Now that you have finished reading the guidelines. Use the given tips as
your guide in writing. This time, write a short speech about an informative
speech and persuasive speech.

Try to follow the given directions for you to be guided while writing. Let’s
get it on paper!

6
Activity 1A: Informative Speech Writing

Speech intended to inform and share new ideas and build perceptions
about “Tree Planting.” Give the importance of your topic to the audience.
This speech aims to give the audience a new understanding or new
appreciation of some subject with which you might be familiar.

Activity 1B: Persuasive Speech Writing

Speech is written to convince the listeners about the validity of the

speaker’s argument about “Why more people Connect More with Nature.”
It might involve convincing some to change their opinion or at the very least
take into account some ideas that have not been considered before.

Let Us Practice More!

How did you find the previous activities? Are you still excited to write?
Very good! Since you’re done writing an informative and persuasive speech, this
time, you are going to practice more of your writing skills about a short
argumentative speech. Try to change the reader’s mind by convincing him or
her to agree with your perspective about “Nature vs. Nurture.”

7
Let Us Remember!

How was everything so far? I believe you have learned so much from the
guidelines from your previous activity. Now, read the following descriptions of
each writing technique carefully. These are very important in your writing.

Informative Writing
As a writer, you simply need to select
a certain topic and provide backup
statement or supporting facts for it in
informative writing. Choosing a good topic
results in a good essay. Choose topics that
are relevant or as you judge to be necessary
for your community.

In informative writing, your main

objective at the end of the day is to make
sure that you provided a good amount of
information to your readers without
having to convince them that the
statements were to be believed and that
whatever their previous beliefs are, should
be forgotten. Informative essay writing
paves a way for more in-depth
understanding of a topic.

It also allows the writer to be neutral

in giving out details and simply focus
on the subject at hand.

The best examples of an

informative business writing are news
articles that we read every day because
their purpose is to provide information to
fuel our brains.

Argumentative An argumentative essay uses evidence
Writing and facts to prove whether or not a thesis is
true. It presents two sides of a single issue
and covers the most important arguments
for and against.

 Makes claims based on factual

evidence (research).

9
 Makes counterclaims – the author
neutralizes or “defeats” opposing
ideas.

 Logic-based - convinces audience

through the merit and rationality
of the claim and evidence
offered.

tiring- thinking of what you are going to write and how you build ideas to come
up with a good output. Congratulations for actively engaging in each of the
activities prepared for you.

Remember that when you write, focus your attention on the given topic,
set your objectives, and present your ideas to educate your readers. Using a
variety of writing techniques is quite challenging. Do not worry if sometimes
you find it hard to express your opinions. What’s important is you are slowly
