words and equip yourself in writing an essay using the learned topic.

*POETRY- is a type of literature that conveys a thought, describes a scene or tells a story in a
concentrated, lyrical arrangement of words.

*POEM-(NOUN)-a composition in verse.

Read and understand the poem below. Write the message of the poem in your answer
sheet.

FAREWELL LIBERTY
Fraulein P. Tolentino

Upon the skies, a red dawn roses


of lies, and deceit, a pure boast
men in their hallowed offices
golden chairs and grinning fact

Men and women die of hunger,


soldiers shot dead with blood that splatter
yet on their backs, there was no shudder
blankness of the night, tacit, mute
Farewell liberty and justice,
heavens frown to this lying bliss,
I am deceived by higher men
with the words of plain corruption

The crows will feed on the living


but we will never bow to them
we rejoice to embracing death
where freedom comes, free and no fret

Farewell liberty, farewell truth


in my own motherland my root
Innocence and corruption,
action and counter reaction
of a one divided nation

Let us cry out in bittersweet,


how we slowly die in living,
living in death yet believing
that one day we will restore thee,
oh, good justice and liberty

IDENTIFYING TYPES OF DEFINITIONS

A. FORMAL DEFINITION- consists of three parts; the term, the part of speech such
as a noun or a verb, and all the traits or characteristics that are specific to that term.
The dictionary is filled with formal definitions, but it is not the only place where you
will find it. Writers often include formal definitions when they write about
something that is unfamiliar to their readers. In textbooks, you may find formal
definitions of terms at the beginning, at the end of a chapter, or in the glossary, which
is a mini- dictionary of terms.

B. INFORMAL DEFINITION- In an INFORMAL DEFINITION, the writer uses


common words to explain unknown terms. These definitions maybe synonyms or
antonyms
.Example:

A. EXTENDED DEFINITION - Extended definitions generally have components of


both informal and formal definitions. However, as the name suggests, the author uses a
number of other techniques to define a word, concept, or phrase, including , memory of
sound, sight, touch, hearing, or smell.
*Environment or sector: pointing out how and where something is used.
*Ramification: Showing how the term or concept affects the people or history.
*Historical references: showing how a word has been defined throughout history.

EXTENDED DEFINITION EXAMPLE; To use colonial forefathers, freedom meant


having a voice in their government (historical reference). The Revolutionary war was
their last resort against an empire that continued to tax its colonists without the
representation of the colonist in parliament, Since the United states won the right to rule
itself, our country has been referred to as "the “end of the free and the home of the
brave.” (example)Freedom means the ability to think, feel, say, or act freely. (listing
parts)It is a state where the bars of bondage do not exist , unfortunately, the widening gap
between the haves and have nots means that some are now shackled by their lack of
education.(evoke the senses: shackled) Americans can attain real freedom when everyone
has the same educational opportunities.

1. List the italicized words in the poem, “Farewell Liberty”.

2. Give the specific/formal dictionary meaning of the italicized words.

3. Give the two types of defining words using informal and extended meaning.
