Grounded - A child or young person who is grounded is not allowed to go out as a punishment
Relapse - to become ill or start behaving badly again, after making an improvement
Integrate - to mix with and join society or a group of people, often changing to suit their way of life, habits, and
customs
Integration - the action or process of successfully joining or mixing with a different group of people
Abduction - the act of making a person go somewhere with you, especially using threats or violence
Nonchalant - behaving in a calm manner, often in a way that suggests you are not interested or do not care
Elated - extremely happy and excited, often because something has happened or been achieved
Serenade - to play a piece of music or sing for someone, especially for a woman while standing outside her
house at night
Squirm - to move from side to side in an awkward way, sometimes because of nervousness, embarrassment, or
pain
Disciple - a person who believes in the ideas and principles of someone famous and tries to live the way that
person does or did
Dabble - to take a slight and not very serious interest in a subject, or try a particular activity for a short period
Usher - to show someone where they should go, or to make someone go where you want them to go
Scrunch - to make the noise produced by hard things being pressed together, or to press hard things together so
that they make a noise

Prejudice - an unfair and unreasonable opinion or feeling, especially when formed without enough thought or
knowledge
Humiliated - If someone is humiliated, they have been made to feel ashamed or stupid
Squeamish - easily upset or shocked by things that you find unpleasant or that you do not approve of
Dignity - the importance and value that a person has, that makes other people respect them or makes them
respect themselves
Slate - in the past, a small, thin, rectangular piece of slate (= rock), usually in a wooden frame, used for writing on,
especially by children
Squander – to waste money or supplies, or to waste opportunities by not using them to your advantage
Subjugation - the act of defeating people or a country and ruling them in a way that allows them no freedom
Senile - showing poor mental ability because of old age, especially being unable to think clearly and make
decisions
Audacity - courage or confidence of a kind that other people find shocking or rude
Bayou - (in the southern US) an area of slowly moving water at the side of the main river
Despise - to feel a strong dislike for someone or something because you think that that person or thing is bad or
has no value
Ire – anger
Pathetic - causing feelings of sadness, sympathy, or sometimes lack of respect, especially because a person or
an animal is suffering
Tremble - to shake slightly, usually because you are cold, frightened, or very emotional
Leverage –
Impudent - rude and not showing respect, especially towards someone who is older or in a more important
position
Exploit (noun) - something unusual, brave, or funny that someone has done
Feud - an argument that has existed for a long time between two people or groups, causing a lot of anger or
violence
Fraternize - to meet someone socially, especially someone who belongs to an opposing army or team, or has a
different social position
Cauldron - a large, round container for cooking in, usually supported over a fire, and used especially in the past
Run for the hills - When someone really wants to get away from a situation or relationship as fast as they can,
they "run for the hills"

Devil in disguise - Something or someone that appears to be good, useful, or benevolent, but that in reality proves
to be the opposite.
Presume - to believe something to be true because it is very likely, although you are not certain
Captivity - the situation in which a person or animal is kept somewhere and is not allowed to leave
Abandonment - the act of leaving someone or something or of ending or stopping something, usually forever
Paranoia - an extreme and unreasonable feeling that other people do not like you or are going to harm or criticize
you
Stenographer - someone who types and does shorthand as the main part of their job
Memoir - a book or other piece of writing based on the writer's personal knowledge of famous people, places, or
events
Resilient – able to be happy, successful, etc. again after something difficult or bad has happened
Compulsion - a very strong feeling of wanting to do something repeatedly that is difficult to control
Oblige - to please or help someone, especially by doing something they have asked you to do
Attic - the space or room at the top of a building, under the roof, often used for storing things
Snoop - to look around a place secretly, in order to discover things or find out information about someone or
something
Hover - to stand somewhere, especially near another person, eagerly or nervously waiting for their attention

Masquerade - behaviour that is intended to prevent the truth about something unpleasant or not wanted from
becoming known
Schmooze - to talk informally with someone, especially in a way that is not sincere or to win some advantage for
yourself
Bystander - a person who is standing near and watching something that is happening but is not taking part in it
Appease - to prevent further disagreement in arguments or war by giving to the opposing side an advantage that
they have demanded
Consecrate - to officially make something holy and able to be used for religious ceremonies
Asphyxiate - to cause someone to be unable to breathe, usually resulting in that person's death
Hillbilly - a person from a rural area who is not familiar with modern ideas and popular culture, esp. someone who
lives in the mountains or far from cities or towns in the southeastern US
Stall - to delay taking action or avoid giving an answer in order to have more time to make a decision or get an
advantage
at sb's beck and call - always willing and able to do whatever someone asks
Hypocrite - someone who says they have particular moral beliefs but behaves in way that shows these are not
sincere
Beseech - to ask for something in a way that shows you need it very much
Palm - the inside part of your hand from your wrist to the base of your fingers
In a tick - If someone will do something in a tick, they'll do it very soon or very quickly. (Back in a tick = will come
back soon)
Veiled - Veiled words or ways of behaving are not direct or expressed clearly
Bleach - a strong chemical used for cleaning things or removing colour from things
Null and void - (of an agreement or contract) having no legal effect and to be considered therefore as if it did not
exist
Masochist - a person who gets sexual pleasure from being hurt or controlled by another person
Masochist - a person who gets pleasure from being hurt by another person
Omen - something that is considered to be a sign of how a future event will take place
Zealot - a person who has very strong opinions about something, and tries to make other people have them too
Miscarriage - an early, unintentional end to a pregnancy when the baby is born too early and dies because it has
not developed enough
Cower - to lower your head or body in fear, often while moving backwards
Fetch - to go to another place to get something or someone and bring it, him, or her back
Ward off something - to prevent someone or something unpleasant from harming or coming close to you

Trinket - a small decorative object, or a piece of jewellery that is cheap or of low quality
Tuck and run - Term used for a coward running from a situation they are scared of
Good riddance - said when you are pleased that a bad or unwanted thing or person, or something of poor quality,
has gone
Confinement - the situation in which a person or animal is kept somewhere, usually by force
Exiled - sent away from your own country, town, etc., especially for political reasons
Acquaintance - a person that you have met but do not know well
Patriarch - a powerful and usually older man in charge of a family, or the male leader of a society in which men
hold power
Retaliate - to hurt someone or do something harmful to someone because they have done or said something
harmful to you

Demise - the end of something that was previously considered to be powerful, such as a business, industry, or
system
Grueling - extremely tiring and difficult, and demanding great effort and determination
Shed - (often used in newspapers) to get rid of something you do not need or want
Pursuit - the act of trying to achieve a plan, activity, or situation, usually over a long period of time
Dementia - a medical condition that affects especially old people, causing the memory and other mental abilities
to gradually become worse, and leading to confused behaviour
Ointment - a thick substance, usually containing medicine, that is put on the skin where it is sore or where there is
an injury, in order to cure it
Stranded - unable to leave somewhere because of a problem such as not having any transport or money
Treachery - behaviour that deceives or is not loyal to someone who trusts you
Absolution - the act of forgiving someone, especially in the Christian religion, for something bad that they have
done or thought
Poppycock – nonsense
Trump - to be better than, or have more importance or power than another person or thing
Dissent - a strong difference of opinion on a particular subject, especially about an official suggestion or plan or a
popular belief
Knack - an ability or special method for doing something easily and well
Churn - If customers churn between different companies that provide a particular service, they change repeatedly
from one to another.

Fawning - praising someone too much and giving them a lot of attention that is not sincere in order to get a
positive reaction
Vindictive - having or showing a wish to harm someone because you think that they harmed you; unwilling to
forgive
Quid Pro Quo - something that is given to a person in return for something they have done
Supplicant - a person who asks a god or someone who is in a position of power for something in a humble way
Lurk - to wait or move in a secret way so that you cannot be seen, especially because you are about to attack
someone or do something wrong
Lurk - to spend time in a chat room or on a social media website and read what other people have posted (=
written or added) without posting anything yourself
Affinity - a liking or sympathy for someone or something, especially because of shared characteristics
Usurp - to take control of a position of power, especially without having the right to
Contempt - a strong feeling of disliking and having no respect for someone or something
Remnant - a small piece or amount of something that is left from a larger original piece or amount
Neglect - to not give enough care or attention to people or things that are your responsibility
Obstinate - unreasonably determined, especially to act in a particular way and not to change at all, despite what
anyone else says
Oppressed - governed in an unfair and cruel way and prevented from having opportunities and freedom
Triumph - a very great success, achievement, or victory (= when you win a war, fight, or competition), or a feeling
of great satisfaction or pleasure caused by this
Bugger off - to leave or go away, used especially as a rude way of telling someone to go away
Bode - to be a sign of something that will happen in the future, usually something very good or bad
Fail-safe - designed so that if one part of a device does not work, the whole thing stops working to avoid a
dangerous situation
Adversary - an enemy
Remains - pieces or parts of something that continue to exist when most of it has been used, destroyed, or taken
away
Sedate - to cause a person or animal to be very calm or go to sleep by giving them a drug
Enlighten - to provide someone with information and understanding, or to explain the true facts about something
to someone
Elaborate - to add more information to or explain something that you have said
Haemorrhage - a large flow of blood from a damaged blood vessel (= tube that carries blood around the body)
Unanimous - If a group of people are unanimous, they all agree about one particular matter or vote the same way,
and if a decision or judgment is unanimous, it is formed or supported by everyone in a group
Yearn - to wish very strongly, especially for something that you cannot have or something that is very difficult to
have
Lull - to cause someone to feel calm or to feel that they want to sleep
Camaraderie - a feeling of friendliness towards people that you work or share an experience with
Semblance - a situation or condition that is similar to what is wanted or expected, but is not exactly as hoped for
High jinks - energetic and excited behaviour in which people do funny things or play tricks on someone
Shirk - to avoid work, duties, or responsibilities, especially if they are difficult or unpleasant
Wallow - To wallow in an emotion or situation is to stay in that state without trying to change
Wallow - (especially of some animals) to lie or roll around slowly in deep, wet earth, sand, or water
Comprehension - the ability to understand completely and be familiar with a situation, facts, etc.
Recourse - using something or someone as a way of getting help, especially in a difficult or dangerous situation
Charlatan - a person who pretends to have skills or knowledge that they do not have, especially in medicine
Confound - to confuse and very much surprise someone, so that they are unable to explain or deal with a
situation
Resonate - to produce, increase, or fill with sound, by vibrating (= shaking) objects that are near
Slug - a small, usually black or brown creature with a long, soft body and no arms or legs, like a snail but with no
shell
Convoluted - (esp. of expression in speech or writing) having a complicated structure and therefore difficult to
understand
Derelict - a person who has no home or money and often lives outsider
Conspire - to plan secretly with other people to do something bad, illegal, or against someone's wishes
Benevolence - the act of giving money or help to people or organizations that need it
Parishioner - a member of a particular parish under the care of a priest, especially one who often goes to its
church
Sermon - a part of a Christian church ceremony in which a priest gives a talk on a religious or moral subject, often
based on something written in the Bible
Atone - to do something that shows you are sorry for something bad that you did or for something that you failed
to do
Ruthless - not thinking or worrying about any pain caused to others; cruel
Piqued - slightly angry, especially because someone has damaged your feeling of being proud of yourself
Joint - a bar or restaurant that serves food and drink at low prices
Reciprocate - to share the same feelings as someone else, or to behave in the same way as someone else
Fib - to tell a small lie that does not cause any harm
Squib - a small firework consisting of a tube filled with powder that makes a hissing noise when it is lit
Squib - A person born into a wizarding family that cannot do magic (slang)
Parentage - When you refer to people's parentage, you mean their parents and/or their parent's country and
social class
Frown - to bring your eyebrows together so that there are lines on your face above your eyes, often while turning
the corners of your mouth downwards, showing that you are annoyed, worried, sad, or thinking hard
Hunch - to lean forward with your shoulders raised or to bend your back and shoulders into a rounded shape
Irrelevance - the fact that something is not related to what is being discussed or considered and therefore not
important, or an example of this
Graze - to break the surface of the skin by rubbing against something rough
Custody - the legal right or duty to care for someone or something, especially a child after its parents have
separated or died
Tryst - a meeting between two people who are having a romantic relationship, especially a secret one
Peerless - Something that is peerless is better than any other of its type
Orderly - a hospital worker who does jobs for which no training is necessary, such as helping the nurses or
carrying heavy things
Fraction - a number that results from dividing one whole number by another
Stoat - a small, thin animal that has brown fur in summer and white fur in winter
Fester - If a cut or other injury festers, it becomes infected and produces pus

Chaste - not having had sex, or only having a sexual relationship with the person you are married to
Meek - quiet, gentle, and not willing to argue or express your opinions in a forceful way
Alteration - a change, usually a slight change, in the appearance, character, or structure of something
Astray - away from the correct path or correct way of doing something
Implore - to ask someone to do or not do something in a very sincere, emotional, and determined way
Fratricide - the crime of murdering your brother, or killing members of your own group or country
Loiter - to move slowly around or stand in a public place without an obvious reason
Trace - to discover the causes or origins of something by examining the way in which it has developed
Tenure - the period of time when someone holds a job, esp. an official position, or the right to keep a job

Platitude - a remark or statement that may be true but is boring and has no meaning because it has been said so
many times before
Intuit - to know or understand something because of a feeling that you have rather than because of facts or what
someone has told you
Easel - a wooden frame, usually with legs, that holds a picture, especially one that an artist is painting or drawing
Swarm - When people swarm somewhere, they move there in a large group or in large numbers
Wager - used to say that you are certain that something is true or will happen in the future
Modesty - the quality of not talking about or not trying to make people notice your abilities and achievements
Squalor - the condition of being extremely dirty and unpleasant, often because of lack of money

Patron - a person or group that supports an activity or organization, especially by giving money

Epidural - an anaesthetic (= a substance that stops you feeling pain) that is put into the nerves in a person's lower
back with a special needle
Toffee - a hard, chewy, often brown sweet that is made from sugar boiled with butter
Nudge - to push something or someone gently, especially to push someone with your elbow (= the middle part of
your arm where it bends) to attract the person's attention
Shut somebody out - to prevent your opponent in a sports competition from scoring any points
Forlorn - alone and unhappy; left alone and not cared for
Gnome - an imaginary, very small, old man with a beard and a pointed hat, in traditional children's stories
Mold - a soft, green or grey growth that develops on old food or on objects that have been left for too long in
warm, wet air

Crib - a small bed for a baby or young child with high bars around the sides so that the child cannot fall out
Penance - an act that shows that you feel sorry about something that you have done, sometimes for religious
reasons
Freudian - relating to the ideas or methods of Sigmund Freud, especially his ideas about the way in which
people's hidden thoughts and feelings influence their behavior
Purgatory - the place to which Roman Catholics believe that the spirits of dead people go and suffer for the evil
acts that they did while they were alive, before they are able to go to heaven
Decisive - able to make decisions quickly and confidently, or showing this quality
Viaduct - a long, high bridge, usually held up by many arches, that carries a railway or a road over a valley
Nonchalantly - in a calm manner, often in a way that suggests you are not interested or do not care

Sledgehammer - a large, heavy hammer with a long handle, used for breaking stones or other heavy material, or
for hitting posts into the ground, etc.

Furlough - a period of time that a worker or a soldier is allowed to be absent, especially to return temporarily to
their own town or country
Tactless - not careful about saying or doing something that could upset someone
Innards - the organs inside a person or animal, or the inside parts of a machine
Uphold - to defend or keep a principle or law, or to say that a decision that has already been made, especially a
legal one, is correct
Apocalyptic - showing or describing the total destruction and end of the world, or extremely bad future events
Subdue - to reduce the force of something, or to prevent something from existing or developing
Ingenious - (of a person) very intelligent and skilful, or (of a thing) skilfully made or planned and involving new
ideas and methods
Bloomer - a silly or embarrassing mistake that does not have serious results
Furnace - a container that is heated to a very high temperature, so that substances that are put inside it, such as
metal, will melt or burn
Palette - a thin board with curved edges and a hole for your thumb, used by artists to mix their paints on while
they are painting
Spill - to (cause to) flow, move, fall, or spread over the edge or outside the limits of something
The lowdown - the most important facts and information about something
Ditch - a long, narrow open hole that is dug into the ground, usually at the side of a road or field, used especially
for supplying or removing water or for dividing land
Staple - a U-shaped piece of metal with sharp ends that is fixed into a surface to hold something, such as a wire
fence, in a particular position
Distinguishable - different or separate from other things or people in a way that is easy to notice or understand
Gauche - awkward and uncomfortable with other people, especially because young and without experience
Mobster – gangster
Invoke - to use a law in order to achieve something, or to mention something in order to explain something or to
support your opinion or action
Steep - A steep rise or fall is one that goes very quickly from low to high or from high to low
Devour - to eat something eagerly and in large amounts so that nothing is left
Rogue - behaving in ways that are not expected or not normal, often in a way that causes damage
Grievance - a complaint or a strong feeling that you have been treated unfairly
Formidable - causing you to have fear or respect for something or someone because that thing or person is large,
powerful, or difficult
Vicious - Vicious people or actions show an intention or wish to hurt someone or something very badly
Lacewing - an insect with large clear wings with thin lines in them
Disperse - to spread across or move away over a large area, or to make something do this
Refute - to say or prove that a person, statement, opinion, etc. is wrong or false
Allegation - a statement, made without giving proof, that someone has done something wrong or illegal
Scavenger - a bird or an animal that feeds on dead animals that it has not killed itself
Scavenge - to look for or get food or other objects in other people's rubbish
Toady - a person who praises and is artificially pleasant to people in authority, usually in order to get some
advantage from them
Decipher - to discover the meaning of something written badly or in a difficult or hidden way
The bloom is off the rose - something is no longer new, fresh, or exciting.
Blatantly - in a way that is very obvious and intentional, when this is a bad thing
Tendency - If someone has a tendency to do or like something, they will probably do it or like it
Sprawl - to spread the arms and legs out carelessly and untidily while sitting or lying down
Saga - a long story about Scandinavian history, written in the Old Norse language in the middle ages, mainly in
Iceland:
Condescension - behaviour that shows you think you are more important or more intelligent than other people
Hippie - a person, typically young, especially in the late 1960s and early 1970s, who believed in peace, was
opposed to many of the accepted ideas about how to live, had long hair, and often lived in groups and took drugs
Sycophant - someone who praises powerful or rich people in a way that is not sincere, usually in order to get
some advantage from them

Disdain - the feeling of not liking someone or something and thinking that they do not deserve your interest or
respect

Transgression - the act or process of breaking a law or moral rule, or an example of this
Orchestrate - to plan and organize something carefully and sometimes secretly in order to achieve a desired
result
Alter - to change something, usually slightly, or to cause the characteristics of something to change
Cicada - a large insect found in warm countries that produces a high continuous sound
Strain - a force or influence that stretches, pulls, or puts pressure on something, sometimes causing damage
Ply - to sell or to work regularly at something, especially at a job that involves selling things
Prattle - to talk in a silly way or like a child for a long time about things that are not important or without saying
anything important
Devout - believing strongly in a religion and obeying all its rules or principles
Ostinato - a musical phrase (= group of notes) or rhythm that is repeated many times in the course of a longer
piece
Legato - used to describe music that is played in a smooth, continuous way, or this way of playing music
Succinct - said in a clear and short way; expressing what needs to be said without unnecessary words
Slick - operating or performing skilfully and effectively, without problems and without seeming to need effort
Stink eye - stink eye n. a facial expression of doubt, distrust, or dislike; a dirty look; skunk eye, the hairy eyeball
Make amends - to do something good to show that you are sorry about something you have done
Incantation - (the performance of) words that are believed to have a magical effect when spoken or sung
Demented - unable to think or act clearly because you are extremely worried, angry, or excited by something
Doppelganger - a spirit that looks exactly like a living person, or someone who looks exactly like someone else
but who is not related to that person
Pyre - a large pile of wood on which a dead body is burned in some parts of the world
Huff and puff - to breathe in a loud and heavy way because of physical effort
Meddle - to try to change or have an influence on things that are not your responsibility, especially by criticizing in
a damaging or annoying way
Jig - an energetic traditional dance of Great Britain and Ireland, or the music that is played for such a dance
Begrudge - to feel unhappy because someone has something that you think they do not deserve
Restorative - something that makes you feel better or more energetic if you are feeling tired or ill
Hornet - a large wasp (= type of flying insect) that can give you a bad sting
Dismember - to cut, tear, or pull the arms and legs off the body of a dead person or animal
Enabler - someone who allows or makes it possible for another person to behave in a way that damages that
person
Cripple - to injure someone so that they are unable to walk or move in a normal way
Fathom - a unit for measuring the depth of water, equal to 1.8 meters or 6 feet
Infidelity - (an act of) having sex with someone who is not your husband, wife, or regular sexual partner
Fodder - food that is given to cows, horses, and other farm animals
Scoop - a story or piece of news discovered and published by one newspaper before all the others
Mope - to be unhappy and unwilling to think or act in a positive way, especially because of a disappointment
Varsity - used to describe sports teams at schools or colleges that are at the most skilled level of play
Wayward - doing only what you want and often changing your behavior in a way that is difficult to control
Estrange - to cause someone to no longer have a friendly relationship with another person or other people
Cowardice - the behavior of someone who is not at all brave and tries to avoid danger
Shackle - If you are shackled by something, it prevents you from doing what you want to do
Nurture – to take care of, feed, and protect someone or something, especially young children or plants, and help
him, or it to develop
Beholden – feeling you have a duty to someone because they have done something for you
Goad – to make a person or an animal react or do something by continuously annoying or upsetting them
Axis - a real or imaginary straight line going through the centre of a object that is spinning, or a line that divides a
symmetrical shape into two equal halves
Cling - to stick onto or hold something or someone tightly, or to refuse to stop holding it, him, or her
Concoct - to make something, usually food, by adding several different parts together, often in a way that is
original or not planned
Patronize - to speak to or behave towards someone as if they are stupid or not important
Chivalry - very polite, honest, and kind behavior, especially by men towards women
Bastion - something that keeps or defends a belief or a way of life that is disappearing or threatened
Choke - (usually in sports) to fail to do something at a time when it is urgent, usually because you suddenly lose
confidence
Wiggle - to (cause to) move up and down and/or from side to side with small, quick movements
Cram - to force something into a small space, or to fill an area with people
Virtuoso - a person who is extremely skilled at something, especially at playing an instrument or performing
Fib - to tell a small lie that does not cause any harm
Espionage - the discovering of secrets, especially political or military information of another country or the
industrial information of a business
Smirk - a smile that expresses satisfaction or pleasure about having done something or knowing something that is
not known by someone else
Facetious - not serious about a serious subject, in an attempt to be funny or to appear clever
Twitchy - nervous and worried, sometimes showing this through sudden movements or movements that do not
appear smooth or relaxed
Acolyte - anyone who follows or helps another person, or someone who helps a priest in some religious
ceremonies
Necromancy - the act of communicating with the dead in order to discover what is going to happen in the future,
or black magic (= magic used for bad purposes)
Whim - a sudden wish or idea, especially one that cannot be reasonably explained
Prodigal - spending or using large amounts of money, time, energy, etc., especially in a way that is not very wise
Fend for yourself - o take care of and provide for yourself without depending on anyone else
Lucid - clearly expressed and easy to understand, or (of a person) thinking or speaking clearly
Rodent - any of various small mammals with large, sharp front teeth, such as mice and rats
Mutter - to speak quietly and in a low voice that is not easy to hear, often when you are worried or complaining
about something
Fitful - often stopping and starting and not happening in a regular or continuous way
Tableau - an arrangement of people who do not move or speak, especially on a stage, who represent a view of
life, an event, etc
Lair - a place where a wild animal lives, often underground and hidden, or a place where a person hides
Pittance - a very small amount of money, especially money received as payment, income, or a present
Pervade - When qualities, characteristics, or smells pervade a place or thing, they spread through it and are
present in every part of it
Chaperone - an adult who takes care of child actors when they are working
Condescend to do something - If you condescend to do something, you agree to do something that you do not

Entanglement - a situation or relationship that you are involved in and that is difficult to escape from
Recuse - to say that a judge or a member of a jury should not be involved in a trial because they have a special
interest in its final result

Barnacle - a small sea creature with a shell, that sticks very tightly and in large numbers to rocks and the bottom

Infidel - (used especially between Christians and Muslims) someone who does not have the same religious
beliefs as the person speaking
Collateral damage - during a war, the unintentional deaths and injuries of people who are not soldiers, and
damage that is caused to their homes, hospitals, schools, etc.
Occult - relating to magical powers and activities, such as those of witchcraft and astrology
